Posted - 06/21/2004 : 18:34:53 I heard that after the Pixies split and everyone went their seperate ways, Kim Deal would fax Frank Black's people with Breeders touring schedules, Breeder's album/single reviews (the good ones, I presume), Breeders album sales stats (didn't Last Splash sell like, half a million copies?), and so on. Kinda Kim's way of sticking it up FB. It seems that success was the best revenge after the split since the Breeders became such a MTV/commercial success whereas Frank Black kinda went cult. I heard this story on the internet, by someone who supposedly worked for FB's record company and recieved the faxes. Dunno how valid it is, but there might be something to it. Anyway, they're back together now, so let bygones be bygones. |

It's interesting to read the speculation about the Pixies past and present; must be very entertaining, but the more entertaining it gets, the more the speculation becomes fantasy. Anyway, you're fun to read, even if you've got it more wrong than right most of the time.

And how, pray tell can you say this with such arrogance?Did you know the band personally? If you did then I'll just bugger off and pretend I didn't say anything

Posted - 06/24/2004 : 22:24:30 As far as the rumours go, I'm not to sure they're true, but unfortunately i don't personally know Kim of Charles, so I don't really know what they'd do. I sure Kim's insults of Charles' lack of popularity wouldn't really affect him. Many of his interviews show he kinda doesnt like the whole 'popular' thing.

Posted - 06/22/2004 : 17:33:11 "Last Splash" went platinum. "Pod" and "Title TK" ARE better than "Last Splash", though. Funny story about the faxes. But no matter what, Frank's music will always be a "hit" in my heart. Chart placings or not.

Posted - 06/22/2004 : 16:45:59 Ok, here's the source and the relevant part for my story. Chinese whispers distorted the "truth" a bit in my version of events, but it still has the same gist:
http://www.timaoutloud.org/archives/000317.html
A funny story about Frank Black (Black Francis' solo career psudeonym) and bassist Kim Deal who later fronted the Breeders. Their break-up on less then friendly terms was saddening because I never thought this would happen. A couple of years later I was walking to dinner with M. Doughty of Soul Coughing just after the release of their first LP (another top 5 of mine) Ruby Vroom. He was talking about how fun it was to get the SoundScan that reports the previous week's LP sales and in what parts of the country etc. Doughty said you want to hear something funny? A person at Warner told me Kim Deal has her weekly Breeders report faxed to Black Francis. Ouch. For those not in the know, a feud between Black Francis and Deal over her dwindling vocal parts and difficulty in getting any of her songs recorded as Pixie tunes was one of the major issues in their breakup. Frank Black's solo album had only sold a few thousand copies and was panned by critics while Deal's recording with the Breeders had sold a few hundred thousands and was at the top of the indie college music charts. Their live shows were drawing audiences as big as the Pixies also. |

Posted - 06/22/2004 : 02:22:03 Too right, the Thing!
Stop feeling the need to take sides. It's fucking stupid. Lou Reed and John Cale both have said dreadful things against each other but also generous and respectful things!
They also got back together to record "Songs for Drellas." That's a great precedent, no?
I'm sure Kim and FB both laugh about it.
...It is a great piece of gossip though... |
the thing |
Posted - 06/22/2004 : 01:39:54 The Pixies split up because Kim and Frank didn't get along, why does everyone have such a problem with the possibility that things were acrimonious towards the end? I can well believe the fax story, it funny - and a very Kim thing to do. At the end of the day they've obviously put the past behind them and reformed one of the greatest bands of our generation so who cares, we can just enjoy the stories and gossip.
And the Breeders most decidedly do not suck!

Posted - 06/22/2004 : 01:17:18 I can't believe this. I used to believe Kim and Charles weren't fighting after the split. There are some stories through the net about people who have seen Kim in a Frank Black show. And Kim have always said Charles is the most talented man she have ever met. So... this story doesn't seem logical.
