Second that!

I used to have the best Breeders bootleg, think it was Chicago or something (long since lost sadly)
And Kim has to literally teach Kelley the chords to "Happiness is a Warm Gun" - she completely "flubs" but it's such a moment.

Frankly, with a smile like Kim's who would honestly care if she played the darn bass with oven gloves on....

I think that the small mistakes makes the shows more memorable.

She's just balancing out against Joey, who's TOO aware of his surroundings. Watch him! Eyes darting. Every time somebody moves he sees it. And everybody's always moving!!! He seems.... pleasantly parainoid? If that's a term.

haha this is a great thread.
i'm sure kim's chronic alcoholism has niothing to do with her looking as though she's unaware of her surroundings at the new shows right?
don't get me wrong, she's beautiful and i definately have her puppies, but MAN THE SAUCE!!

in watching some of the live shows from the DVD and them play in spokane, i thought they were better in spokane than on the video for the most part...but maybe thats just because i was there. and i'd rather see the band having fun and being laid back than hitting every single note on time like robots. I'll listen to the album for that!

bop.

In Eugene 4/28, Kim said "Was anybody here last night? I think I'm doing way better tonight."

I would like to second, third or fourth the "Warm Up Tour" sentiments...$25-35 is not exactly premium ticket price these days...

We're paying for the priviledge to see them do just that. From the beginning these dates have been advertised as "warm up" shows, and not a polished finished product. And I realized why Kim has been having a harder time catching up than the other guys. She's spent the last decade playing a six string guitar. Yeah, she's played a bit of bass here or there on demos and whatnot, but she's had to retrain her hands to handle a bass guitar for this tour. Frank's playing the same guitars he's been playing for years, as has Joey. Dave hasn't touched the drums for years, so he said, but at least he hasn't been playing mostly hand percussion for ten years and had to find his footing again behind a regular kit. Know what I'm saying? I play both guitar and bass guitar. I hadn't played my bass in several months, then last fall I started playing bass for a friend's band. I had to get accustomed to the longer neck and greater distance between the frets, and it wasn't the easiest thing to do. I can only imagine playing as little bass as Kim has for this period of time and then having to start stretching my fingers out all over again. When Coachella rolls around, then I'll expect to hear a finished product. Until then, for those of you who don't want to pay money to see the Pixies warm up, don't see them until after Coachella.

As a guitarist who also plays bass, I concur. There is a definite adjustment time between instruments, especially when you've become accustomed to playing one for a long period of time. The way you hold down the strings for intonation is different, the feel of the neck is way different, and the action of your picking hand is WAY WAY different. Give the woman a break! I'm sure she'll be kicking ample ass in another week or two.

I don't really care if Kim is flubbing or not. She has been through enough crap and it was just great to see her on stage with Frank and the guys again. She looked great and she looked happy. I don't know about the rest of the shows, but in Boise they all seemed to be having a great time. She may have been off a little, but that is Kim. She is the cool older sister who you never understand, but love her anyway.

Kim can "warm up" on her time. She should actually play her instrument on my time (and my dollar).

Yeah, there are some holes in the analogy such as that, but I didn't feel that disproved or took away from it. Logically speaking, it'd really be hard to do a warm up tour for free, even if they are just warming up. However, if you take into consideration the fact that you could shell out $120 on a ticket from Ticketmaster to go see a crap band's finished product or around $35 to see the Pixies find their feet, that seems like a pretty discounted price to me.

Three words justify any flubbing - WARM UP SHOWS.

Three steps to a better life:
1) Find the off button on your television.
2) Push it.
3) Leave it like that for awhile.

Many of the same issues may come into play, but it's not a perfect analogy. Just one difference is that most of the venues and cities what get to see them for a day (or 2) now may not get to see them again. I would rather pay to see every Pixies "dress rehearsal" while they're together than pay to see any other band's finished product. And most people who have seen them recently agree that they still put on a great show. Small mistakes don't detract much at all from their performances, IMO.

Passion,
I see exactly what you mean. I guess I was just so blown away by the fact that I was actually at a Pixies concert to keep tabs on the screw ups. I guess I'm just content seeing them all on stage together again. But like Manny said a few posts above, "Two words: 'warm up'." I think we need to keep that in mind. I got the impression coming in to these shows that they were warming up and getting used to playing together again. Since I'm a theatre major, I'll make an analogy which I think makes sense, and I apologize for ranting:
I'm looking at this warm up tour like I would a dress rehearsal for a theatrical production. Many of the same elements are there. For a given dress rehearsal that I'm involved in, we make sure we've rehearsed and are about ready to perform for a large audience. Then we put all the elements together and perform like we would for a large audience, only we do it for a select few. That selected audience knows it's just at a dress rehearsal and it's not the real deal (not to downplay the significance of the warm up tour, or to make a bad pun). Sometimes at these dress rehearsals some of the actors don't know all their lines and or cues. Sometimes other actors have to cover their asses and sometimes we just have to stop the dress rehearsal and fix the problems then and there. It's not a perfect show by any means, but it's not meant to be, and your average small audience at a dress rehearsal knows that. They're there to get the actors used to performing that show in front of an audience and to get feedback as to what the audience liked and disliked. I feel like we're that small audience and the Pixies are performing in the dress rehearsal. Kim, like many actors I've worked with, isn't quite ready for that big performance yet, even though the other guys are pretty close.
That's just how I view it. Do ya see what I mean? I apologize for being loquatious.

Passion,

Did Joey screw up on Gouge in Winny? I remember him playing a note, then looking off to the side of the stage and pointing up (I guess to a roadie or something to make an adjustment)

And Kim definately still drinks. Not like Robert Pollard though
The Passion Of El Diablo Posted - 04/20/2004 : 19:25:07
And, Prozac, just listen to "Into The White" from the Winny show. Joey totally saved the song with his guitarrorizing. He almost made me forget that Kim forgot how to play and sing the rest of the piece.
The Passion Of El Diablo Posted - 04/20/2004 : 19:19:21
Prozac,
Hey, kid, I love Kim Deal. I loved her when I chatted her up at length at the Congress Theatre in Chicago after a Fugazi-Shellac-Ex performance. I loved her the fifteen times I've watched the Breeders play. I loved her the first time I heard her angelic voice on tape. But, the reason she is getting picked on is that she is blowing it in a major way. It's not just an occasional "whoops," like Joey's lil' flub on "Gouge" in Winny. It's pervasive, constant, and frustrating from a fan's perspective. You can respectfully disagree, and you should if it doesn't bother you. But it should bother you to hear wrong notes throughout the night in your favourite songs.
prozacrat Posted - 04/20/2004 : 15:58:18
Hey, DeBased. Yeah, it does seem like people are picking on Kim a little more than others. Joey had more than his share of flubs the first show, and people were generally understanding and forgiving. And he looked like a kicked puppy after he would botch a note too. I felt bad for him. I don't know why people would single out Kim, but hey. It's all good. Most people are already looking past those few mistakes and the rest should follow soon. And if they don't, it's their loss. Oh well. And woodworm, thanks for the compliment.

I incidentally read this while listening to Is She Weird from the Winnipeg CD. Yeah. Tempos were off. But I'd much rather have some of the playing be off while Kim is smiling from ear to ear and joking around and having a great time with the rest of the band, instead of it being all serious and her focusing 100% on making sure she's playing correctly. And remember, they haven't been playing before an audience for even a week yet. If they pulled off a completely flawless show from Minneapolis onward without playing in front of a crowd for twelve years, we would all realize that they're infallable gods. They can't be that obvious!

i agree 100 %

Let's just hope certain bass players show as much "progress" as I have.
klikger Posted - 04/20/2004 : 11:34:43
I like that "during the first few shows". That's progress.

But not about Kim's awful playing during the first few shows.

Yet another case supporting the creation of a "sarcasm font", I guess
Maybe I just read through your post too quick. Then again, I did say "Either you're being sarcastic, or..."
billgoodman Posted - 04/20/2004 : 03:08:22
DeBased, I think it's a bit too easy to say that this criticism is caused by the fact that kim is a woman. If you listen to the shows you can hear her making mistakes, forgetting lyrics and bass off-time. That's why people criticize her.
And I just have to say that it's a warm up tour, so it's the right place for mistakes.
Kim hasn't played bass in a while, so that's one more point in her defence.
Listen to breeders shows, she doesn't fuck up on those songs. Give her some time!
I still think she rules and I still think she has one of the best voices I ever heard, but
she does make those mistakes, she does screw up Gigantic.

ps
I do think women get the respect they deserve, I'm not against feminism, I'm a feminist myself, but I just don't think it has to be part of this discussion

DeBased Posted - 04/19/2004 : 22:46:33
I'm a lady bassist, too, and I am not happy to see so much criticism of Kim on other threads (I realise the joke in this thread). She's definitely been targeted more than anyone else. I find it very hard to believe she's playing that badly (I'm not listening to the shows yet). I play all these songs myself and will be seeing the band at Vancouver and making my own decision. She's been playing Gigantic for over a decade, and there's just not much there to screw up! I can tell you first hand bassists just don't get the respect, and neither do girls. Plus, people blame her for the band breaking up and that can't be all one person's fault. And maybe it was the best thing for that time anyway. BE NICE TO KIM! It is such a gift to get to see this band, even if they do this for one year. People should throw flowers as far as I'm concerned.

the method...of stop tap spin, no talkin'...
klikger Posted - 04/19/2004 : 17:43:20
Kim still drinks I think. Quite sure that was beer she was sipping the other night. And she still has her motor skills. Wish you were being sarcastic throughout your post, Passion.

that they are back together, if that's what they are doing.I also understand how some people might be a little skeptical about this whole "reuinon" thing but I would rather see the show and say "yeah, that was dissapointing" than to not know at all.But it's not like they are going to suck. They are the fucking PIXIES!!!!!!!!
