Posted - 03/02/2004 : 17:41:02 We all know and love the classics like Debaser, and Wave of Mutilation, but what are some of your favorites that aren't instatntly thought of as Pixies classics? Here's some that come to mind:
Brick is Red Hey Ana Lovely Day
Let's hope they remember these when preparing set lists for the upcoming tour! |

Posted - 04/15/2004 : 12:52:21 I used to listen to, but overlook Brick is Red until recently. Lateley, I've been warping vinyl, I've been listening to it so much. I think it is the one song that sums up the Pixies. It is short, to the point, and knocks you back about three feet whenever you listen to it. This would have to be my most underrated song. |

So underrated that they didn't even commit it on a record.
But this is by far the Pixies song that my kids, 6 and 5, prefer. They laugh their asses off each time they hear it. |

Posted - 04/11/2004 : 00:31:54 alright, i've been a frank/pixies fan for awhile now, high school got into the pixies and i still get annoyed with people who've heard of and "like" the pixies, but don't know frank black from the last of a twelver of high life's in the fridge. by the way, those are both 2 things whose meaning and value truly can't be put into words. if you have to ask how much it is, you can't afford it. anyway, i'm way down with fb's cause, there's almost always 1 cd he's on in my changer in my truck and i walk the fine line of not insulting his fine work with my acoustic guitar - and have just recently even started listening to the pixies very often anymore. frank's done enough solo the last 5-6 years (teenager of the year could be my favorite cd of all time when it comes right down to it), that i had barely even dealt with the pixies. i had some good slack time this winter to get reacquainted with all kinds of old tunes, and i've had to say the most overlooked cd pixies cd was bossanova - and a breeders cd was a good find as well. this winter i listened to bossanova and ended up playing it all the time, sometimes like 4 times in a row. i finally put it way just today, to keep it safe from any chance of going stale. tons of crazy good, kickass songs i'd barely even noticed back in the day - and then there's stormy weather. granted, i'm a fullon ski bum/river rat (making that song a mantra for good times, and one damn good tune to get yourself mentally ready for a days work farming powder or surfing the goods - a solid standby to have in the truck for the drive up after catching the first buzz of the day on the way to the pass or the river. one of these days, it'll make the first ghetto ski/paddle flick me and my buds put together if we ever get off our shit together. it may be a simple song, but the way it builds and just opens everything up a little bit makes me want to start doing some crazy buddhist monk chanting shit. frank does looks kinda buddha-style, and all that jain bizness, back and forth between the highs and lows of the rock world, blazing his own trail - kinda siddartha redux. i've always dug watching mother nature rip it up, and experiencing the crazy shit she can throw at you randomly - i think the song implys that the same applies in relation to life and how thing go, good or bad. sometimes when shit gets rowdy, you just gotta sack up, point em and hang on for the ride and make the most of the cards you're dealt. of course, then sometimes it just is talking about 16" of fluffy powder coming down on teton pass, either way. sorry for the ramble, it seemed like a few people were maybe talking shit about stormy weather, and i figured a guy like me oughta stand up for it. olympus mons and palace of the brine are the shit. debaser. dig for fire. head on. havaleeeeena.

Posted - 04/10/2004 : 22:13:12 What does "underrated" mean? In terms of what journalists typically mention- Monkey Gone to Heaven and Wave of Mutilation - that would mean that every other Pixies song would be underrated besides these two. In that case, I cast my vote for Subbachultcha as my favorite Pixies song and therefore most underrated song. But if we're really talking underrated, in which case underrated might include popular opinion on the forum, how about La La Love You? David Loverling on vocals? Haven't heard anyone mention this one. |

Posted - 04/07/2004 : 14:06:44 The Pixies have a strong underground fan base. They got more respect for their music after the band broke up though. It is like an artist, many artist are more respected after their death but, the pixies have managed to come back from death to rock again. Anyways, here are some of the songs I thought were underrated: Is she weird the happening Havalina Bird Dream Of The Olympus Mons |

Admittedly they probably put it on the wrong album but it fuckin rocks so hard, its amazin, and i have heard a lot of people bad mouth it in the past. Build High is the worst pixies song ever. Can we get an updated percentage u reckon ShakeyShake?

Three things: 1. I would like to be the fifth to say that Santo is underrated. It's my favorite. 2. Chess Piece Face, as PixiesSteve already said, I think it's "chained." Maybe if you listened to it with that in mind it would rub you the RIGHT way, cause I know it rubs the hell out of me. (P.S. Nice name. Not enough TMBG references on this forum.) 3. Shakey Shake, I wouldn't be surprised if 100% of the Pixies songs made it on here, mainly because the Pixies are, overall, an underrated band. Am I right?

Yeah, I've heard the "Oddball" cover. Pretty faithful to the original, I'd say. At the end, John Flansburgh says something like, "This is for Frank Black."

I am also quite the TMBG nut, since I've seen some TMBG tendencies on this and other threads. If anybody out there has questions regarding that underrated band with their underrated songs, I'd be more than happy to help out. The Pixies had many underrated songs, however, they recorded less than a hundred of them. Pretty easy to keep track of when compared with the likes of TMBG. Not saying they're better. They just have a shit ton more songs.

Posted - 03/07/2004 : 23:42:59 And I need to agree with blown away on the ending of No. 13 Baby. When I crank that up I have to shudder. I think the ending of that song is one of the most beautiful moments in the history of rock & roll. The Pixies have shown us that they are second to none when it comes to arranging tight, short rock songs. But GOD DAMN when they just groove like they do in that song, it almost makes me think of what could have happened if they had opted to become a jam band. Just thinking about that ending.... Okay. I think I need to change boxers. [:S] ......

Posted - 03/07/2004 : 23:39:39 Gigantic has taken top honors at practically every film festival it's been entered in. It's a thoroughly bitchin documentary. And the DVD has tons of extra fun stuff, though no extra Frank . I read a review of the documentary written by a guy who's favorite band was Def Leopard. He said he'd never liked TMBG, but due to some bizarre circumstances he wound up watching Gigantic. He said it was one of the best things he's ever seen. Now that has to mean something. And in response to Shakey Shake's response, not only are the Pixies, overall, underrated, but their fan base is as well. We rock. And I'm gonna add Theme From Narc just for the hell of it.
