What is the difference between the single mix and the album version?

In (on) Debaser remix there's some weird noise made by BF just before the chorus, it sounds like an "aawww..." Long time no listen to the song though. I'm gonna check it out

I was thinking that the remix sounded like I remembered
the recording sounding, with the thwack-thwack-thwack of
the bass intro.

I tried turning up the volume on the original until
the bass came in at the same volume as in the remix.
That my ears are ringing this morning may have nothing
to do with high blood pressure. When I was young I
listened to music at much higher volumes than I can
stand today.

The difference in noticeable definition between 15 and
16 bits is negligible.

I'm not sure about effective, it's an odd word. Which
recording has the best sound or which recording works
best.

I remember that the very first time I heard Surfer Rosa,
it was on cassette, I thought that it was the worst,
sloppy, low-budget music ever recorded.

When I heard Doolittle I had fallen in love with Surfer.
Doolittle didn't sound raw, it was too polished. Then
I heard Come On Pilgrim, which sounded brutal, then
Bossanova which sounded like Barry Manilow.

By Trompe I had given up expectations. I don't remember
it sounding like any other band, maybe it would to a new
listener now. I remember it was Big-time, radio ready.

From memory, TLM is a better recording and has balls.
How important is that? There is some music for which
you disregard the medium and some music sounds incorrect
without the scratch and warble of a 78.

I would like to know how someone who hasn't heard the
music hears COP vs. TLM.

That's a neat little dissection hammer. I'm glad it ended on a positive note for you. I'm usually willing to sacrifice a little nuance for a crisper, louder recording so I was gald they released it. I wish Doolittle played louder and crisper.

Which of their recordings is the most effective in your opinion?

I just listened to it and I found out two things.

First, the chord from my iPod in my car isn't
working very well.

Then, I really liked the remix at first, but it
suffers from the loudness problem as outlined in
this thread.

It's pretty neat, they use a little more separation
on the spoken word in the chorus.

The bass comes in nice and strong, using a huge
portion of the track, and then they try to fit the
rest of the song around it which inevitably fails!

The bass becomes muddy and loses the snap that
is on the original. Sometimes you can barely tell
she is plucking quarter notes, they just blend
together.

The "Chein" yells don't quite have the demonic halo
of the original for some reason.

The guitars fight for space on both versions, on
the remix the other guitar has more space. I think
there is a very faint 3rd track with riffs that never
shows up well on either version. It could just be
my memory adding those notes in.

But it's like experiencing the song for the first
time again, and that was worth every penny!

I bought the CD last night, hopefully.
It should come next week.

Death To The Pixies has a live version and the Doolittle version. The Clif Norrell remix on the 1997 single is a full blown studio remix, loud and hard. What do you guys think of it?

I did notice that Gigantic was new (to me)!

OK, Debaser there is not the same as on Disc 2 of
Death to the Pixies?

Yes, I just listened to it, that's fantastic.

There are no more unlisted alternate takes?

Don't overlook Gigantic itself, it also got the Gil Norton treatment.

What do you guys think of Clif Norrell's remix of Debaser on the 1997 single that also has the VRPO studio sessions of Bone Machine, Gigantic and Isla De Encanta? It's good and loud.

First Pixies song I heard. Bought the B Sides album first, and bloody love it.

Complete B-sides is one of my favorite Pixies albums. You've got Velvety Instrumental Version, Make Believe, Narc, Manta Ray, Evil Hearted You, on and on! An amazing collection!

I'm pretty sure this was the band's first time working with Gil Norton, and that he produced this re-recorded version of River Euphrates along with Gigantic. Steve Albini of course produced the Surfer Rosa versions. I also seem to remember hearing there's a Gil Norton produced recording of Here Comes Your Man (different from the Doolittle version) from the same session that's never been released.

oh hammer - that is truly tragic....
or extremely exciting depending on how you look at it.

Oh yes, I have the Gigantic EP.

I think I only ever listened to the Lady in the Radiator
song, I just assumed it was the album version. F*** me.

I'm re-ripping albums right now and I was trying to figure
out why I never bought the complete B-Sides.

Yes, I just listened to it, that's fantastic.

There are no more unlisted alternate takes? I know
about UK Surf and a few live things (which didn't make
the "Complete" B-Sides)!

I like the single mix better. It's my favorite Pixies song. The difference...it's just a little more dynamic and the vocal harmonies sound better to me.

Qu'ils aillent se faire foutre <-- yeah, what he said.
Broken Face Posted - 09/30/2009 : 13:02:04
It was totally re-recorded with a bit of an extended ending - its on the Complete B-Sides record, and worth checking out.
