There's a long history of "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" covers in movies: Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Not Another Teen Movie, Sky High... OK, not that long. But you can add to the list (500) Days Of Summer, the Zooey Deschanel/Joseph Gordon-Levitt love story with the meaningful-core soundtrack (its trailer opens with the leads bonding over "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out"). I think I saw an advertisement for it somewhere? Zooey's joined here by her songwriting partner, folk monster Matt Ward, and theirs is a ghostly, twangy take on the Smiths' briefest ballad, appropriate for the last dance at a '50s prom (ask grandma).
Here's what else you'll find on the soundtrack. (I'd say cue the Garden State comparisons, but you probably did that when Joseph Gordon-Levitt appeared in oversize headphones.)
01 Mychael Danna And Rob Simonsen - "A Story Of Boy Meets Girl" 02 Regina Spektor - "Us" 03 The Smiths - "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" 04 Black Lips - "Bad Kids" 05 The Smiths - "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" 06 Doves - "There Goes The Fear" 07 Hall & Oates - "You Make My Dreams" 08 The Temper Trap - "Sweet Disposition" 09 Carla Bruni - "Quelqu'un M'a Dit" 10 Feist - "Mushaboom" 11 Regina Spektor - "Hero" 12 Simon & Garfunkel - "Bookends" 13 Wolfmother - "Vagabond" 14 Mumm-Ra - "She's Got You High" 15 Meaghan Smith - "Here Comes Your Man" 16 She & Him - "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want"
And the Pixies' "Here Comes Your Man" is used in a karaoke scene.

15 “Here Comes Your Man” by Meaghan Smith
We hate this so much, we can’t even describe it. It’s like the Pixies via some horrible MIDI program. Download it if you want it. We don’t want it. Maybe the producers couldn’t affor the Pixies’ original version?
Surviving the Golden Age: New: Relation "Here Comes Your Man (Pixies Cover)".
Hippies Are Dead: David Bowie (and Tin Machine) - "Debaser".
BrooklynVegan - Alice Donut - new album out, video & a Brooklyn show.
Alice Donut's lyrics take on what they view as the perversities, odd details, and petty humiliations of life. Their lyrical subject matter focuses on topics including depravity, domestic violence, sexuality, and eggs. Add in a trombone-based version of the Pixies "Where Is My Mind" and you've got a brand new Alice Donut classic!

Strangeglue - Albums Out This Week: W/C 6th April 2009.
THE COLOR OF VIOLENCE: YOUTHANIZE
American duo The Color Of Violence is the latest screaming addition to Epitaph's roster. Their debut album 'Youthanize' includes a cover of the legendary Pixies track 'Rock Music', however the album is unlikely to join the Pixies in our collective hearts; as stated by front-man Travis "It may not be ground- breaking, and it may not sell any copies, but we tried to be ourselves and experiment, and we're all really happy with the way it turned out, so fuck it". Honest and realistic: we like that. Don't worry Travis, we're sure your mum will buy a copy at least.
Salon Arts & Entertainment - "Observe and Report".
My hunch is that the people who respond to "Observe and Report" will use words like "risky" and "dark" to describe it. Hill is no dummy: He's playing straight into the audience's desire to be seen as cool and sophisticated. But he's really just pandering to that audience -- he's not asking anything more of them than to bow down before his bleak, twisted vision. Toward the end of the picture -- around the time it erupts into cartoony performance-art violence -- a cover of an old Pixies' song, attributed to a band called City Wolf, drifts onto the soundtrack. It asks the question, "Where Is My Mind?" and I'm afraid I know the answer: I lost it at the movies.
ARTISTdirect News - Playlist: Jody Hill
2. City Wolf — "Where Is My Mind" (Pixies Cover)
"That's my buddy Joey Stephens, who's actually the composer on this. It was great. He wrote the music for our first film, The Foot Fist Way. I keep my friends close. I went to film school with Ben Best, Danny McBride and David Gordon Green, and we all still collaborate. It's a great way to work."
ARTISTdirect Music - Album Reviews: Youthanize by The Color of Violence.
Kicking off with a crushing cover of The Pixies' "Rock Music," Youthanize follows through with a barrage of frantic angled notes and a raw percussion.
The Scorecard Review - Observe and Report.
Sounds: The soundtrack uses an appealing collection of songs that span from classic, easy going rock (The Band) to punk (Mclusky). It should be reported that Observe has the absolute best usage of the track “Where Is My Mind” since it was first made popular by the last scene of Fight Club. Oddly, this film doesn’t use the original version by The Pixies but an updated one by a band called City Wolf. Score: 8
Daily Vanguard - The life and times of Storm Large.
A beautiful rendition of The Pixies’ “Where is My Mind” was wonderful on its own, but the connection was lost between song and story.
Punknews.org - The Color of Violence - Youthanize.
The duo take a chance by opening their long-gestating debut, Youthanize, with a cover of Pixies' "Rock Music." Bloom says it was a clever nod to the Pixies, who themselves opened the album "Rock Music" comes from (1990's Bossanova) with a cover, the Surftones' "Cecilia Ann." Makes sense, one supposes, and the band have an interesting and naturally screamy take on it.
Retro Music Snob (MP3's): Rhett Miller (of The Old 97's) Covers The Pixies "Wave of Mutilation".
Punknews.org - Lemuria / Off with Their Heads - Under the Influence Vol. 7 [7 inch].
Lemuria tackles the Pixies’ "Alec Eiffel," and while it may be blasphemous to some, Lemuria’s verison is essentially more Pixies than the Pixies verison. Where the Pixies’ Alec Eiffel has a more distinct `80s sound (though it came out in 1991) Lemuria’s is much more punk-based, the original school of thought of the Pixies. Of course, it helps that it’s sung by Lemuria’s Sheena Ozzella, who is a fantastic vocalist and has one of the most attractive voices in punk. Lemuria’s pace of the song charges ahead in a more guitar-driven way, and where the Pixies version fades out, this builds up into an aural mess (in a good way) like the Ergs!’s "Upstairs/Downstairs" and slowly dies down, giving the whole track the room to breath that the Pixies never gave.

Gigantic- This well-known track by the infamous Pixies was one of the most memorable tracks off their 1988 Surfer Rosa LP. A slower, more moody take on this track appeared in 1993 by the dream-pop band Orange, on THURTENE (A tribute to 4AD) compilation album .

One of the many standout tracks is a thoroughly individual cover of Pixies’ Break My Body, while elsewhere there are intriguing nods to Tom Waits.
http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/entertainment/music/world_music/s/1004/1004290_hanne_hukkelberg__rykestrasse_68_nettwerk.html
The voice is undenably seductive, although the closest Hanne comes to conventional sexiness is with a cover of the Pixies' Break My Body, though this is recast as a bonkers sea shanty. The world-view is wide-eyed and wondering, which is also the likely effect on listeners. |

http://arts.guardian.co.uk/filmandmusic/story/0,,2045775,00.html
True, the unpredictable treatments cover a broad range of styles, from the sparse fragments of the title track to the banjo- Bach of Ticking Bomb; from the jazzy, catchy A Cheater's Armoury to the lush sweep of the Pixies' Break My Body, the album's sole cover. |

I think I have all the tribute albums. The compilation includes several tracks off Pixies Fuckin' Die (by far my favorite tribute album), one off Where Is My Mind, 2 off La La Love You, but none from the Japanese tribute or from the Belgian Death To The Pixies We're Better.
I hesitated about the Teenage Fanclub cover, but though I like the band I am not that found of the cover.
Thanks for the link to the Rogue Wave cover. I did not have this one.
I am trying to compile as many Pixies covers as possible. I have around 200 by now, that can be downloaded through Soulseek (make a search on Pixies Covers). |
