Yeah, it is becoming boring...

I feel like I am back to College in those silly 90's...

You may accuse me of musical revisionism (I don't mind) but I believe that Nirvana actually played a minor role in pop music. Musically it's nothing but heavy rock.

Nirvana, nirvana blabla blabla. Stop it please.

Their music is BORING. Smells like a teenager. i.e. it sticks!!!

Pixies music is way much mature, arty and less conotated.
And especially alive and out od fashion.

The influence Nirvana had over bands and fashion was BAD.

I wish we had a day without quoting the same things about Nirvana. There must be plenty of forums dealing with necrophilic bad taste where Nirvana fans can share their enthousiasm for boring teenage suicide lust things... and boring heavy rock.

Thank You.

I'm a regular old fashion music admirer.

There are alot of bands that were influenced by Nirvana's music and whose careers were helped (or made) because Nevermind broke into the mainstream. After Nevermind took off, record labels and radio stations started looking for rock bands to replace the bullshit Whitney Houston and big-hair-band crap of the late 80s/early 90s.

If Nevermind wouldn't have been so well received, there are many bands that wouldn't have gotten the recognition or had the careers they did....
Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden

I also think it's safe to say that Nirvana brought alot of well-deserved attention to the Pixies... and for that alone I am glad.

- On August 1991 in the european festivals Black Francis (solo), Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Ramones, Mudhoney and lots of more bands played there. Is it true that in a Black Francis show Kurt washed him using a fire extinguisher?? I guess it was on Pukkelpop Fest

- In the same euro festivals, is it true that Kurt (knowing the love BF had for the Ramones) changed the order of the tables in the casino and put the Black Francis' table next to the Ramones' table??

It was indeed the Belgian Pukkelpop festival, in August 1991. I was actually there, as a fourteen year old. And I still have the backstage-report of that festival, that was published in newspapers afterwards.

The complete line-up was in chronological order: Nirvana (opening at 10 AM, as a last-minute-replacement for the cancelled Limbomaniacs), Ride, An Emotional Fish, House of Love, Dinosaur Jr, BF solo (only announced a week in advance as a surprise act), Sonic Youth, Pogues, Ramones.

After Nirvana’s gig, which included some guitar smashing, and some of the threesome crawling at each other’s shoulders, they apparently went on acting foolishly backstage. There was indeed the notorious mixing of the table-cards for the Ramones and BF, so the Ramones had to sit at a dinertable meant for two, har-har. Also, during BF’s performance, Kurt apparently aimed some water in BF’s direction, but I can tell you, from the audience’s POV, I didn’t notice anything like that. So it wasn’t that BF got all wet, or BF’s performance was even interrupted or anything. Oh and also, Novoselic was puking all over the place backstage that day.

I can only think of a few at the moment, it's been a while. That band from australia with that stupid prat of a front man (chris something, i forget), and i know Jeff Buckley (whom i like) was an admirer of Kurt.

Yeah, I get it. You don't like them so therefore they suck and in your mind they have had "negligable" influence. Describing Nirvana's influence on the last 10+ years of music as negligible when all the evidence is to the contrary tells me how much you know about the topic.

I'm sure The Beatles influenced some idiots too but I wouldn't discount all the great musicians they influenced.

Thanks for the tip. I don't remember relying on Mtv to make my point. But thanks to your keen observation I can now stop taking notes every day when I watch Total request Live.

Something tells me that if the topic was the Pixies influence on music, you wouldn't be dismissing the opinions of the music industry, musicians and talking about the idiots they influenced.

This will probably be my last post on this topic. I can see from some comments here that there's probably no point in discussing this. I feel like I'm talking to 16 year-olds. Some of you may be more at home dishing gossip with the girls at the Britney Spears message board.

I really don't understand your argument in the context of this discussion. If fans, people in the music industry and musicians vote and say an album or a band are significant and influential, then I think it's safe to say that it does make it "significant or influential in the grand scheme of things".

Well, before, you simply said that "Nevermind is always on Top-whatever lists of albums chosen by fans and musicians in the industry." A "top-whatever list" could easily just be a list of albums these people like; and liking something doesn't mean you're necessarily influenced by it.

As for what it has to do with the context of the discussion, not much. I'm not disagreeing with your main point, just saying that this one sentence doesn't necessarily support it.

"The editors at Rolling Stone polled an array of musicians, critics, and influential industry figures to come up with these 500 Greatest Albums Ever Made. Nearly 300 such music experts responded, each with a list of 50 albums."

#17 Nevermind - Nirvana

In answer, M. EL:
No
Neither - there's rip-off, there's referencing, and there's plagiarism, and SMTS may be referencing Debaser (not U-Mass - they came out at the same time)
No

I realise these were all entirely rhetorical, but I wanted to answer, y'know, as an expert.

I'm like a lost snail in the night.

ElevatorLady Posted - 04/16/2005 : 16:09:23
Is it true that Nirvana ripped off Pixies?
