i know it's been discussed a hundred times over in a hundred different places, but if you were to pick one band/album sounding most similar to the Pixies who would it be???

my pick: Spoon's first full length album "Telephono". Track 1 and a song called 'Dismember' are rediculously Pixie-esque.

Future Kings of Spain are a good band who must've listened to Pixies but do their own thing.

no one said mclusky yet? i've really gotten into them lately, really growing on me. *very* pixies like. medium is the message must be a tribute to the pixies or something...

The Monkey Helper has had a make-over! http://www.monkeyhelper.co.uk (that is my band)

Blur's self titled album (with Song 2 on it) has Pixies in it.

A band called Garageland from New Zealand (I think) sound very much like the friendlier songs from Doolittle...

Nirvana was the bastard offspring of The Pixies and the Replacements. I always imagined Paul Westerberg listening to a Nirvana record and getting totally pissed off and busting something.

There might be a good band visting Australia soon, if rumours are to be believed! ;)
Don Eduardo Posted - 08/17/2005 : 19:35:20
There's this crap band here in Australia called End Of Fashion who have a song called "Oh Yeah" that seems to be on channel V (our version of mtv) every 5 minutes, and its a complete Where Is My Mind ripoff. Seriously I remember how the Flaming Lips had to pay royalties to Cat Stevens for their song Fight Test ripping off Father and Son, this is just as bad.....at least they admitted it, they said something like "oh well everyone else is recycling tunes, so why can't we"

Beachbuggy sound a bit like Shellac trying to play Pixies songs (Albini production and everything) with a Michael Stipe-Frank Black hybrid lead singer. And they have 2 drummers who play the exact same thing. \m/

That lead singer from Frank Black and the Catholics kind of sounds like the dude from the Pixies.

And Neil Young's Winterlong sounds like a cover The Pixies do!!

:D

David Bowie's 'Cactus' from the album 'Heathen' sounds Pixie-esque.

Kim Deal is in The Breeders?

;)
silvereel Posted - 08/13/2005 : 10:44:52
i think that in rare instances, The Breeders sound like the pixies. the lead singer sounds almost exactly like kim deal.

(It's a joke. i'm not really that stupid)
charlesthompson Posted - 07/23/2005 : 10:02:41

hhmmmm, i could tihnk and think and think and i wouldnt think of anything...cos no band (even doing a cover) has ever managed to capture the pixies mood or aura..and i think i right in saying that thats the apealing things about the pixies. or one of the main ones anyway. and i tihnk placebo's cover of "where is my mind?" is an insult to each and every pixies fan out there..

wheezer-the sweater song is very pixieish

Actually, I guess I can kind of see the surf influence... the singer sounds totally different though..
django39 Posted - 07/23/2005 : 06:26:33
I don't know that I see the Pixies in Metal Flake Mother... They are a great band though, IMO the best to come out of that early 90's Chapel Hill scene..
rusty bullethole Posted - 07/15/2005 : 10:40:29
Some of Possum Dixon sounds like Pixies to me. I haven't heard anything from them in over 10 years though, but the self titled album from 93ish has quite a few parts that sound very familiar.

I can dream of schemes when I'm sitting in my seat, I don't see any flaws til I get to my feet.

pretty much a reverse of the "Where Is My Mind?" verse chord, spot on Carl. I concur
Carl Posted - 07/15/2005 : 06:15:20
The Frames Revelate is very Pixies..like Where Is My Mind? mixed with I Bleed!

Pere Ubu with albums like "Story of my Life" (1992)and "Raygun suitcase" (1995) sound indeed like Pixies. There would be a lot to analyse in the similitudes and who influenced who... Just note that Frank Black "has stolen" Eric D Feldman from Pere Ubu and the laters had producers like Gil Norton or Al Clay... And that David thomas is more Black than Frank sometimes...

Tin Machine did try to sound like Pixies with songs like "A Big Hurt", "Bus Stop", "Pretty Things", "Goodbye Mr. Ed" and ...most of their songs actually!

Modest Mouse's Good News... is packed full with Pixiers influence. I think the most obvious is Bury it With Me. That song would never exist if there wasn't for the Pixies.
OK, I'm gonna sound pathetic now but I can't heple myself... I'm very drunk at the moment. I have never posted drunk before (I think) so I just have to point it out. Have a nice day (or night, if you're in Europe) everybody.

Modest Mouse song called 'The View' (from 'Good News for People....') to me sounds like it could be a Frank Black & the Catholics song.

Starting with the 2'00" until about 3'30" mark of the song, it sounds so much like FB:
Listen to the song at the 2'12" mark....sound very ole mulholland-esque. and at the 3'17" mark the words "feels pretty soft to me" sound almost identical to any pistolero-era FB song.

A Call To Apathy by The Shins sounds a lot like fb&tc !
(maybe it's just because of the pedal steel!)

Sorry but no I don't.

Try Apologies To Insect Life' by British Sea Power. That definitely reminds me of the Pixies.

The Gun Club- Fire of Love

This albums has real pixies fire and energy to it, but since this record came out in like 1979 I guess you could say that the pixies have a real gun club fire and energy to their music.
