i know it's been discussed a hundred times over in a hundred different places, but if you were to pick one band/album sounding most similar to the Pixies who would it be???
my pick: Spoon's first full length album "Telephono". Track 1 and a song called 'Dismember' are rediculously Pixie-esque.

The Toadies - even though i love the Toadies, some of their songs are total Pixies knock offs- "Heel" to "Tame," "Tyler" to "Where is my Mind?," etc.

I'm not sure if it's ever been brought up before, but those Nirvana kids sound like they may have been influenced by the Pixies. In fact, that 'Teen Spirit' thing seems like a Pixies rip-off. |

I would recommend Rubberneck for starters....also if you like it...(Vaden Lewis) formed a new band called "Burden Brothers" I rather like it myself. |

George42, you took the nomination right out of my mouth. Total Pixies influence. Plus I love Spoon.

i qualified it to just Telephono b/c Girls Can Tell and Kill the Moonlight are a little more experimental (for lack of a better word). but i agree, Spoon is great and i think only that one album sounds similar to the Pixies. since Interpol has a Britt Daniel (Spoon leader singer) version of one of their songs, I guess that the Pixies have an indirect influence on Interpol as well.

Telephono is definitely Spoon sounding like the Pixies, and certainly more overtly so than any other album of theirs, but elements of sparseness and so on have made their way into later albums, as Spoon found their own sound.
Which song did Interpol do Spoon-ish? Never heard of that.

UK import single of 'Slow Hands' has the Britt remix. kind of a coincidence that Interpol/Antics is on Matador Records....the record company that released Telephono. things are coming full circle.

I've said it before, but the closest thing to Doolittle, part 2 that I know of is the Beyond the Java Sea album by Metal Flake Mother. It came out in 1991, I believe. I think it's much closer to the Pixies than Spoon or The Toadies because MFM also gets into the surreal art influence that those two bands don't. All the songs are about 2-1/2 minutes long, the singer screams and makes little snarling noises, the songs take unexpected turns in a short amount of time. I don't know if this is findable on your favorite file sharing thingee, but if so I recommend sampling the songs "Tongue Long", "Wingtip Lizards", "Sutpen", "Dance for Nails", "Mr. Flavor", or "Elsewhere". There are two different CD versions. One has just the original 17-song album, the other (on the Hep Cat label) adds on the tracks from an earlier 4-song 7" EP.
Some members of the band went on to later "fame" in the Squirrel Nut Zippers. |

In Utero is basically Surfer Rosa, stripped of all its beauty. Compare the 2nd last track, to SOmething Against You, and you'll see what I mean. (you probably already do)

Here is an interesting band. In the first two of the free songs you can hear that Frank and Kim type harmonies. I wouldn't call them a pixies band but you can pick out the influnce.

Compulsion were great and sounded a lot like the Pixies. Their first album, Comforter, sounded like a cross between early Pixies and Nirvana. Their second one, Future Is Medium, was more like Trompe Le Monde and early Frank Black. However, many of the songs I prefer were B-sides and these were some of these B-sides that sounded the most like the Pixies. I cannot imagine that you dig the Pixies and not Compulsion. Not only is the sound very similar, but they were also amazing songwriters, with great melodies and very, very fast tempos. And they also played a wonderful cover of Alec Eiffel during the first of their black sessions on French radio France Inter. |

Just listening to Spoon, Telephono, at the moment. I can hear tiny similarities to the Pixies but I think thats because it's been brought up here, I can't hear any real concrete similarities. In fact I find them abit pedestrian, not really the most inspiring of bands.

i'm surprised you're the first person in this thread to mention mm. they definitely have that pixies edge, especially their earlier stuff that was released on 7" (and later compiled onto a cd release called "building nothing out of something" i think).

It most certainly was, VoVat... Come to think of it, TMWSTW was also the title of his third album(,) on which the song itself appeard. |

The Gun Club- Fire of Love
This albums has real pixies fire and energy to it, but since this record came out in like 1979 I guess you could say that the pixies have a real gun club fire and energy to their music. |
