Posted - 07/08/2004 : 22:35:51 ..taken from an article in Time Out New York (5/2001) I stumbled upon where Bob Pollard reviews new releases for the writer, including DITS. I find it more difficult to tolerate the Fading Captain's uneven body of work when I read this shit!
Frank Black and the Catholics: Llano Del Rio (What Are Records?)
RP: There's a lot of mixed genres in this song, and I'm more into straightforward rock. It's pretty bad. Who is it?
TONY: Frank Black.
RP: No! Is that Frank Black? He's lost his mind! He has! I would have never guessed that. Actually, I haven't liked his stuff since the Pixies, and I loved the Pixies. It has nothing to do with my friendship with Kim Deal, either. I met a few of the (other) Pixies, and they weren't very nice people. Sometimes even when you're a fan of someone, if you meet them and they aren't very nice, it turns you off to their music. But, I can listen to the Pixies 'cause they're so good. Even the cover (of this album) sucks. They've all got sunglasses on.
TONY: Well, they're in Los Angeles.
RP: Oh, is that it? It's hard to be good when you're from LA. It's too happy there: What are going to write about? He needs to hang it up.

Posted - 07/12/2004 : 15:13:54 Who's "busting your balls" robotblood? They're discussing what you posted.
BLT? One person makes a sarcastic comment, and it's "those that are busting your balls?"
On the topic - I do think it's weird that someone who has written and released so many crappy songs would make such a comment. He apparantly has no shame or inner-monologue to speak of.
I love GBV to death, but I'd have to say that the ratio of good material to crap coming out of Bob Pollard is about 30/70. Now since he's written about 90,000 songs, that leaves us with a heck of a lot of good, but he's in no position to comment on the quality of work that some other artist has released! |

Posted - 07/11/2004 : 21:46:42 BLT's not snide, robotblood (=oil?), just sarcastic. It's his way. :)
For the most part, I think everyone's generally just posted counter-opinions, not necessarily anything attacking you personally, but I haven't read through this thread since my last post and have too many to go through.

Posted - 07/11/2004 : 10:12:36 Bob Pollard always says unkind things of other bands he doesn't have to mean it half of the time he's drunk anyway I saw a concert of them on the internet and he said all those nice things about Jon Spencer and even dedicated a song to him When I saw GBV last year he told us that we should make fun of our friends who were attending Jon Spencer shows
He is a weird guy who flames almost everybody

Posted - 07/09/2004 : 20:17:48 as the original poster, need i remind those who are busting my balls for posting this article and, *gasp*, expressing my opinion on Bob's obvious slag of FB that this forum hosts such nonsense topics as "SMYT Survivor", "Does Any One Here Actually Like Frank Black?", and "Is Frank a Macho Macho Man?". Why is my topic off-limits? BLT, I apoligize if this topics bores you enough that you HAD to post a snide reply, but I really wasn't trashing Pollard for his taste. I thought he was overly nasty when discussing FB, and I thought it would be alright to share my opinion.
Sorry for the interruption of the fun.. Now lets get back to more important things, like rating your top 10 FB&C songs that start with the letter H, B, and L. |

...maybe when he said, "He's lost his mind," he actually meant that Frank is certifiably insane and should be incarcerated in a psychiatric institution and put on medication.
I definitely think so. :)

also GBV is the spotiest band ever

Posted - 07/09/2004 : 11:02:19 What's with people playing these songs? As much as I like Tony's Theme and Llano Del Rio, they are not where Frank really shines, in my opinion. Any other track played from DITS and I'm sure his comments would've been different.

Posted - 07/09/2004 : 09:51:32 In print you can't hear how a person says things. He was obviously joking. Or maybe not-- maybe when he said, "He's lost his mind," he actually meant that Frank is certifiably insane and should be incarcerated in a psychiatric institution and put on medication. |
Cult_Of_Frank |
Posted - 07/09/2004 : 09:33:43 If I were Frank I might be a little offended since he's called "not very nice", told "he's lost his mind", and it's suggested that he "hang it up", but it doesn't really offend me. I just happen to disagree and am led to believe that many of the same things could be said of Bob just from this article.
If you don't like the music, fine, but don't air your dirty laundry. That's not very nice either.
That said, I still like GBV/Mr. Pollard and have had "Cut-out Witch" in my head for the better part of the morning. I'm sure he didn't mean to come sounding as mean as he did. Certainly in comparison to the Sonic Youth thing (which, I have to agree with BLT, was really not that bad either) he seems like he's full of praise. Or at least has some nice things to counter the bad:
"I can listen to the Pixies 'cause they're so good."
"When 5000 posts you reach / Look as good you will not, hmmm?" |
VoVat |
Posted - 07/09/2004 : 09:07:43 And Pollard doesn't even seem to have the pretention that bothered a lot of people about Sonic Youth's comments. Saying Frank has "lost his mind" isn't very polite, I suppose, but it's basically just a matter of taste. I really can't understand why anyone would dislike "mixed genres," but to each his own.
