I really don't see "The Happening" as a verse/chorus deal. It's more of a song with two distinct sections, neither of which can really qualify as "verse" or "chorus." It is true that it starts out loud and gets quiet, though.
Garbage has made a (damn good) career out of alternating between sticky-sweet and raunchy, sometimes one way and sometimes the other (verse/chorus). |

Yeah, he's a jackass. He has the body of a steroid freak with the head of an eighties Miami Vice reject. I similarly have an inexplicable hatred for him, his commercials, and the frequency at which they are on TV.

I don't think it was intentional or anything, esp. because it was written and recorded long before the verse/chorus Pixies dynamic got flogged to death, but one thing I always loved about The Happening was how it flipped it -- raunchy verse, quiet chorus. |

Down on the Street probably uses it in the most Pixies way, as in instead of just going from soft to loud, Iggy screams the choruses as well. That said, it does have guitar in the verses, and Pixies were noted for having just bass. |

I pretty much agree with Dean here. They certainly didn't create the quiet verse/loud chorus dynamic, but the particular style they used has been imitated by many grunge bands.

'Teen Spirit' doesn't take its riff from any PARTICULAR Pixies song..like people said, its more the overall dynamic/rhythmic guitar style that indicates a clear Pixies influence. Plus, the verse with the solid BASS backbone, and a couple of scant guitar notes played over it... VERY Pixies indeed.

This dynamic has been used in punk roock. Perfect example : the Clash, Should I stay or should I go.
I keep feeling like people are just looking at screens and web sites all the time, but do they ever do anything? Or go out and say anything to anyone? I'm not so sure anymore. |

I wouldn't say they invented that dynamic, but it was the key to their sound and was really very accentuated. They did this very well, and that was inspiring to a lot of others, and they took it to extremes. While it's true that it's been around forever, I don't think there are many examples of such extremeness: from a harsh whisper (literally) to the most God-forsaken scream ever recorded (see: Tame).

Here are probably the 2 best and earliest examples of "soft/loud":
"Happy Together", by The Turtles (1966)
"Happy Jack", by The Who (1966)
There are probably even EARLIER instances than these. The whole "dynamics" technique has been around for as long as MUSIC has, let alone rock music. In classical music, dynamics are the main part of the sound. In the classical music I've heard, anyway.

Yeah, Jimbo's pretty much right. Pixies defined a sound which became a staple for Nirvana and others, so it wasn't any particular song. It just happens that U-Mass's chorus has a very similar chord structure to Teen Spirit.
