Posted - 04/28/2004 : 18:41:51 Now that I've finally tracked down all of FB's solo releases...
With so many people always wondering which album to start with, or which album to pick up next, one would think, (especially with the wealth of material that's out there), that Frank would certainly warrant a 'best-of' compilation by now.
Trouble is, how would you narrow down what to put on it? I mean, would you just stick to the commercially released singles? Or would you do a fan-poll to compile the overall favorites?
With so much great material, it was hard to even make a *two-disc* best-of disc set to carry for my own usage in the car.

Posted - 12/31/2004 : 04:05:45 hey Brackish Heart, Yeah when the FB chat kinda gets low on topics (bet nearly everything that could be a thread has been written, long time before my existance) I like to search the archives. There's some relevant questions and facts that need answered and responded to. This is Franks official site (forget the unofficial bit, we all know the truth).
I think the FB section will explode again once Honeycomb is released and toured, I do understand the lack of new threads has something to do with the Pixies reunion. Understandably. It's a major event in mine and Frank Blacks life.
Plus I don't like to see good threads die. |

Posted - 12/30/2004 : 13:46:22 Okay. to make it easy on myself I'll choose three, yes, only three tracks from each album:
Los Angeles Hang On To Your Ego Parry The Wind High, Low Whatever Happened To Pong? Headache Fiddle Riddle Men In Black Kicked In The Taco The Adventure And Resolution All My Ghosts I Need Peace The Man Who Was Too Loud Billy Radcliffe So Hard To Make Things Out So. Bay St. Francis Dam Disaster Stupid Me If It Takes All Night The Farewell Bend I Will Run After You Whispering Weeds His Kingly Cave San Antonio Tx The Scene Jaina Blues Horrible Day Massif Central
without listing all of Franks songs, here are the ones I found extremely difficult to leave out:
Don't Ya Rile Em Ten Percenter Abstract Plain Freedom Rock Two Reelers Big Red The Cult Of Ray The Marsist I Gotta Move 85 Weeks I Want Rock And Roll Blast Off Dog In The Sand True Blue Everything Is New The Snake Coastline
and i know both lists will change on listening to my FB collection religiouly like I do. |

Posted - 05/03/2004 : 12:21:29 Even I only have 6 of IceCream's selections on my Two Disc. Los Angeles, His Kingly Cave, Parry the Wind High, Low, Thalassocracy, Men In Black and All My Ghosts. Just goes to show you that different fans like different material. Mine is not Cult heavy or Pistolero heavy. Those two may have the least of all tracks on my comp. I would still never try and cram them onto one disc though unles requested by the recipient.

Posted - 05/03/2004 : 09:44:57 Wow, IceCream, my best-of would be almost completely different! Of your whole list, I might only take the following:
Los Angeles, Abstract Plain, Places Named After Numbers, Robert Onion, Men In Black, All My Ghosts, and maybe Parry the Wind.
Not to say the others aren't awesome, but I think I'd have different tracks. Angst, for example, never struck me as a song that someone HAS to hear of FB's. I'd be more likely to give them Speedy Marie, End of Miles, Massif Centrale, So. Bay, Bullet (I cannot believe you don't have Bullet on there!), ...

Posted - 05/03/2004 : 08:46:00 There's just too many. Even in my 2 disc I obviously had to make exceptions and deletions. Some good stuff made it some good stuff didn't. I don't even think I included Headache because it was already heavy on th first two albums. When I make a mix I look at all the albums, average how many song from each album per cdr (25 tracks) and then I start to arrange. With 10 cds like Frank, it was averaged out to 2-3 songs from each cd per cdr. Then you make cuts.

Posted - 04/29/2004 : 17:28:32 I could easily come up with a 12-15 song Frank 'Best of'. 12-15 songs is the ideal length, I think. More than that is probably overkill if you're wanting to introduce music to most people. Leaving some great songs off is a good thing. The listener will find them when they get into the albums. |

I was thinking that when I wrote my first post, why bother?. But I also like juxtaposing songs from different era's in his music history, it's sort of cool listening to stuff off TOTY next to BLD, and listening to his scope and range of lyrics and musical styles.

Posted - 04/29/2004 : 13:47:35 I can get a Pixies best of onto one disc. That's enough for someone not too familiar with them. I could never cut the Frank one down to one disc. Unless it was for my dad. I would give him majority Catholics era songs and keep it to the very western sounding ones. I feel bad that I had to leave stuff off of the two disc set I had made.

Posted - 04/29/2004 : 12:23:20 The one CD best-of is not only impossible, but you risk severe distress and distraughtness.
I made one the other day of Pixies stuff, which is a FAR more limited catalogue and still could barely do it. It took over an hour and I ended up having to overburn the 80 minute CD by a minute or so. :)

Posted - 04/29/2004 : 11:05:21 I tried making a Best Of and narrowed it down to around 40 tracks. In the end I just made a 20 track Best Of for one for my friends who liked FB but didnt have any of his stuff. It was to hard to chose stuff and leave other stuff out for myself to listen to, so I did it with someone else in mind. Some day I will get round to putting together a double disc. Most of my live stuff is on Live in Paris vinyl so I have to convert that somehow.

Posted - 04/28/2004 : 20:40:17 wow, philbert. that's a really excellent tracklisting. When I was burning a best of myself I stupidly only made it one disc, which is just impossible, what with nine albums, soon to be three b-sides collection, and various live stuff. I might just throw away my old disc and copy what you did. |

Posted - 04/28/2004 : 19:24:16 I tried to make a mix for a friend and my brother and there was no way it could have been 1 disc. I too struggled to make it two discs. Of course it ends up being all my favs.
