I'm such a devoted Frank Black fan and I love his music so much that I listen to it more than any other artist. Sadly I get yelled at all the time by family and especially my sort of current girlfriend for always playing it. Is it just me or do people just not get the genius of the man? I'm constantly hearing in the car, "Put something in other than Frank Black!"

today i was watching gouge and where is my mind came on, and at the end, my mother, who was in the room at the time, said she liked it! which is pretty amazing, cos she can't take anything harder that bruce springsteen(in a musical sense, of course...).
whoreatthedoor Posted - 05/03/2004 : 09:23:29
My mother can't stand Frank solo records. My sister hates the Pixies. My friends will kill me if I put some FB&C.

Well, perhaps this is MY reason to love him...

I read this thread's title and thought it to be some salacious tabloid story about Frank falling out with his family.

My boyfriend didn't like neither pixies nor FB.(He loves NEW ORDER)
He said "Too noisy.I almost go mad".
Only FB•TC he didn't hate. "Lyric. Cool guitar!"
Everyday we enjoyed listen to FB&TC .
And I remembered to compel him to listen to FB and pixies in the low volume once a day.
After three years , now , he can't live without FB.
Custom makes all things easy.

My fiance finally admitted to liking a Pixies song, being Allison. Now I'm gonna make her listen to all of Bossanova and go from there.

I don't really care what music girlfriends, friends, and relations are into. In fact, I often find that don't really like most music geeks all that much.

This week I found a Frank Black VIDEO that I forgot I had. It's a 1996 (August 1996 if the camcorder date stamp at the beginning is correct) show for some radio station festival. "Live 105". Shakey sound, but listenable. Shakey camcorder, but watchable.

Frank is more animated on stage than he usually is these days. He steps away from the mic several times and thrashes the guitar around or bobs up and down. He talks a little more, too ("Can someone get me a corndog? I've been thinking about it all day. Well, no I'd better not."... "Sorry our songs have all these long, stupid intros", he says right before "Whatever Happened to Pong?" gets going)
floop Posted - 04/23/2004 : 22:49:30
i don't discriminate when it comes to cute girls. not all girls i've dated were into Frank Black. but they usually like him.

my rule is: if we're in my car, i get to choose the music. if we're in your car, i get to choose the music. it works quite well. you should try and implement it.

Opinions cannot be 'right' or 'wrong', but they CAN be the result of ignorance. I do not like ignorant women.

Is not showing appreciation for FB result of ignorance?

And one more thing: I'm actually saying "put something other than Frank Black" to myself all the time. FB is special to me, and therefore, he must be used scarcely. Special things do not occur often, I think.

i am lucky in that my girlfriend and children like frank/pixies. it would be quite the drag to suffer denegrating remarks from people i respect about people i respect, but hey it happens all the time. i usually just deal unless it is just not worth it. and then i don't, because hey it is just not worth. i also hope i don't have to pay 450 for tickets. do you think they'll play vermont

But she doesn't like Frank's first solo effort but loves both all of his Catholics material, so I can let that slide.

My girlfriend is a "repeater" too! I feel your pain, man

Seems wrong to call it "Frank's first solo effort." Sounds more like an excellent freaking album more than just an effort. haha.

I'm still converting my girlfriend. I've copied her most of the Pixies albums and some FB. i think it just takes time. I'd be patient with your GF. I probably didn't start REALLY getting into Frank until a year after I'd heard my first Frank song. I matured, and now I know his amazingliness.

But if you've been dating a couple years already, better get an imaginary girlfriend...

To klilger, I don't think you should waste a ticket on somebody that doesn't even really like the pixies. You could end up having a really bad time if she starts complaning about being bored. But I'll go with you.lol jk.
And yes, I used to date someone who was the total opposite of me.He didn't even know who FB is( not to mention the pixies),and I realized he was actually pretty lame.He wouldn't even come with me to see FB when he came to town.I'm not saying if you don't know who the pixies are you're lame, actually I am.Tommorow I get to see the pixies.I'm sooooo excited.I tried to download the link for the saskatoon show, but I think I fu*ked up.That sucks. If anyone is looking to get tickets for either Vancouver show,I got an email today from showtime tickets saying that they're selling them for $99 and $125 each. That totally pisses me off after I've already spent $450.00 for two tickets.Oh well.Hmmm... I wonder how the Victoria show went.
klikger Posted - 04/21/2004 : 18:01:45
Thanks, pal. It's kinda hard not to listen to Frank all the time, but the minimal Frank approach is already paying dividends: She used to tell me to turn it off after a few songs, but now she doesn't. She's even inquiring about the extra ticket I bought to one of the Chicago shows in November. :)

Oh, and that imaginary girlfriend thing is ridiculous. I saw an interview that Martin Sargeant from TechTV's Unscrewed did with one of the imaginary g/f's. They take their job quite seriously.

So, is "my sort of current girlfriend" the new pet name these days? All kidding aside, it sounds like you're holding a grudge, and you need to give her an ultimatum, like they do on Jerry Springer.

I say dump her and take a photographic time line of it. I'll be looking for the topic titled "Ex-girlfriend, 1 boy, 1 bitchslap." It's natural for musical consumers to say the "play anything but..." line, even though they listen to the same fucking radio mix 24/7. That's the part that doesn't make much sense to me. I've heard the line many times before. A girl who doesn't like good music is no girl for me.

That is awesome! If you need to break up with a real girlfriend just get an imaginary one, get her to send you e-mails, leave the computer on (by mistake) and voila, you will be single again!

My doctor told me if I wanted to lose weight I should stop buttering my Oreo's!

but my girlfriend is a real person.

it's only our relationship that's imaginary.

That is just scary. Though looking at some of those girl, wouldn't it be better to be single?

www.imaginarygirlfriends.com is awesome.

Here's Lauren bio (unfortunately she's all booked up):
Hello! I'm Lauren!! I can provide just about any imaginary girlfriend service needed. We can meet once or twice for an hour long online chat that can be arranged at a time for you. I WILL write back to your emails (as your girlfriend) and if you wanted I will leave a voicemail message for you too. I will send you one letter each week and will enclose at least one photo with every letter. I love to write and can't wait to share my hopes and dreams with you in writing.

A week before our time is up, you can break up with me and I'll spend the next seven days begging you to take me back. Please choose me as your imaginary girlfriend!

$40 for two months and at the end she'll beg you to take her back. That's cheaper than a Pixies show + CDlive

Wait, this site isn't even a joke!! It's fucking for real?

Last time I checked, hopeless losers didn't need to pay a monthly fee to confirm their status

What a sad sad planet we live on

Chick, I'm glad you're a girl. "Chick" would be a shitty user name for a dude.

I actually don't think each Frank release sounds really different from the others. Yeah, Teenager With a Beer sounds different from Show Me Britney Spears, but most of the Catholics releases seem interchangeable to my ears. The last 4 at least.

What keeps ME from burning out on The Frank is that he keeps putting out more stuff. Frank doesn't do the current thing where you put out one new album every 2, 3, 8 years. He's on a 70s classic rock schedule where you put out something new every year cuz you're a musician and that's what you're s'posed to do. He's always done that. Even in the Pixies days. In a way, it's kinda good that the American Recordings thing didn't work out cuz Frank probably couldn't have put out an album a year with them.

The thing with FB, is how do you ever get tired? I mean, yeah, I like to hear new stuff and though I am going through FB's solo stuff in the car and have been on a massive Pixies kick since Winnipeg, I haven't listened to his stuff much since SMYT came out in September. But every album is so different, they might as well be different artists. Can you really compare an album like SMYT with the orange album, or BLD with TOTY, or DW with Cult of Ray, or ... ? Well, the answer is yes, but Frank is hardly a one-sound man that you get tired of easily. Even within the context of (most of) his albums.

So dump the significant other and find someone who 'gets' it. And you can be gloriously single as I am for the rest of your days. :)
