I'm such a devoted Frank Black fan and I love his music so much that I listen to it more than any other artist. Sadly I get yelled at all the time by family and especially my sort of current girlfriend for always playing it. Is it just me or do people just not get the genius of the man? I'm constantly hearing in the car, "Put something in other than Frank Black!"

It might not be a bad idea to give Frank a bit of a rest. I totally understand your love for his music, and being so into one band or artist that it's all you want to hear is fun, but it's healthy to branch out a bit. Wilco, Pavement, or solo Stephen Malkmus are good substitutes for Frank Black. They're in a similar vein, but different enough to break the monotony that others around you might be experiencing. I dunno, just my thoughts.

My fiance is like that, too. I'm slowly trying to convert her. I try to let her listen to stuff that we both like when together and keep most of my Frank obsession behind closed doors. When we get married though...

my girlfriend makes fun of me
but give her some Pavement, Smog or Elliott Smith
and she is quiet! After those, slip in some more FB

Pavement and Wilco are NOT substitutes for Frank! But then I never liked those bands so I'm biased...

To my mind, a good similar-but-also-different substitute for Frank is Lee Hazlewood. An album like Cowboy in Sweden sounds really nice when you wanna put the Show Me Your Tears down for awhile. The country influences are there, the timeless songwriting is there (Lee Hazlewood's stuff sounds just contemporary today as it might have sounded in the 60s and 70s), and the eccentricity factor is there IN SPADES.

I always carry some Frank Black with me. I've never burned out on any of his albums.

well my mum loves fb! she's always listening to him. although unfortunately i no longer live at home... i live with my gf, and she doesn't really like fb... she owns his first album, before i ever met her... but she reckons i over play the stuff. which is odd as because she won't let me play any of his stuff, she hardly ever hears it... she's only heard SMYT a couple of times, at most!

but hey, would it be any fun if every tom, dick and harry liked the man? i think not. we're an elite bunch, with superior taste in music, i reckon.

Well I reckon a lot of women listen to FB
maybe a little more men though
The topic isn't about men against those stupid fb hating women
It's about people against their stupid fb hating partners
so do you have a guy who doens't like FB or the pixies and forces you to look at the sound of music?

I turned my girlfriend onto Frank/The Pixies...she actually listens to those albums more than I do nowadays! Then again, she got started a little later so she doesn't quite yet have the "been there, done that" perspective on the whole FB/Pixies canon of songs & music. I think that once you can recite the tracks of every Frank Black album in order, you acheive a new stratum of fan-dom (call it obsessed, call it devoted, call it what you will)

this is a textbook example of why you should break up with your girlfriend and disown your family. if you can't see the signs for yourself, then we can't help you.

The thing with FB, is how do you ever get tired? I mean, yeah, I like to hear new stuff and though I am going through FB's solo stuff in the car and have been on a massive Pixies kick since Winnipeg, I haven't listened to his stuff much since SMYT came out in September. But every album is so different, they might as well be different artists. Can you really compare an album like SMYT with the orange album, or BLD with TOTY, or DW with Cult of Ray, or ... ? Well, the answer is yes, but Frank is hardly a one-sound man that you get tired of easily. Even within the context of (most of) his albums.

So dump the significant other and find someone who 'gets' it. And you can be gloriously single as I am for the rest of your days. :)

I actually don't think each Frank release sounds really different from the others. Yeah, Teenager With a Beer sounds different from Show Me Britney Spears, but most of the Catholics releases seem interchangeable to my ears. The last 4 at least.

What keeps ME from burning out on The Frank is that he keeps putting out more stuff. Frank doesn't do the current thing where you put out one new album every 2, 3, 8 years. He's on a 70s classic rock schedule where you put out something new every year cuz you're a musician and that's what you're s'posed to do. He's always done that. Even in the Pixies days. In a way, it's kinda good that the American Recordings thing didn't work out cuz Frank probably couldn't have put out an album a year with them.

Find a new girlfriend

Chick, I'm glad you're a girl. "Chick" would be a shitty user name for a dude.

Okay, anyone who registers with this particular site might as well be making the self-admission that "I'M NEVER GETTING LAID EVER AGAIN. EVER! IN FACT, I'M THE SADDEST LOSER IN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE AND IN ALL KNOWN EXISTENCE."

www.imaginarygirlfriends.com is awesome.

Here's Lauren bio (unfortunately she's all booked up):
Hello! I'm Lauren!! I can provide just about any imaginary girlfriend service needed. We can meet once or twice for an hour long online chat that can be arranged at a time for you. I WILL write back to your emails (as your girlfriend) and if you wanted I will leave a voicemail message for you too. I will send you one letter each week and will enclose at least one photo with every letter. I love to write and can't wait to share my hopes and dreams with you in writing.

A week before our time is up, you can break up with me and I'll spend the next seven days begging you to take me back. Please choose me as your imaginary girlfriend!

$40 for two months and at the end she'll beg you to take her back. That's cheaper than a Pixies show + CDlive

That is awesome! If you need to break up with a real girlfriend just get an imaginary one, get her to send you e-mails, leave the computer on (by mistake) and voila, you will be single again!

I say dump her and take a photographic time line of it. I'll be looking for the topic titled "Ex-girlfriend, 1 boy, 1 bitchslap." It's natural for musical consumers to say the "play anything but..." line, even though they listen to the same fucking radio mix 24/7. That's the part that doesn't make much sense to me. I've heard the line many times before. A girl who doesn't like good music is no girl for me.

So, is "my sort of current girlfriend" the new pet name these days? All kidding aside, it sounds like you're holding a grudge, and you need to give her an ultimatum, like they do on Jerry Springer.

I am a man with 3 fingers...but that doesn't count my index finger nor my thumb.

Thanks, pal. It's kinda hard not to listen to Frank all the time, but the minimal Frank approach is already paying dividends: She used to tell me to turn it off after a few songs, but now she doesn't. She's even inquiring about the extra ticket I bought to one of the Chicago shows in November. :)

Oh, and that imaginary girlfriend thing is ridiculous. I saw an interview that Martin Sargeant from TechTV's Unscrewed did with one of the imaginary g/f's. They take their job quite seriously.

To klilger, I don't think you should waste a ticket on somebody that doesn't even really like the pixies. You could end up having a really bad time if she starts complaning about being bored. But I'll go with you.lol jk.
And yes, I used to date someone who was the total opposite of me.He didn't even know who FB is( not to mention the pixies),and I realized he was actually pretty lame.He wouldn't even come with me to see FB when he came to town.I'm not saying if you don't know who the pixies are you're lame, actually I am.Tommorow I get to see the pixies.I'm sooooo excited.I tried to download the link for the saskatoon show, but I think I fu*ked up.That sucks. If anyone is looking to get tickets for either Vancouver show,I got an email today from showtime tickets saying that they're selling them for $99 and $125 each. That totally pisses me off after I've already spent $450.00 for two tickets.Oh well.Hmmm... I wonder how the Victoria show went.
