Posted - 04/19/2004 : 15:47:47 After much careful deliberation, I've decided that IMO, "Show Me Your Tears" is by far my favorite moment in the FB cannon, Pixies or otherwise. I'm really fascinated by the autobiographical nature of the songs, as well as the two-track recording... and basically the overall vibe.
Can anyone tell me what other songs may have been recorded/released from these sessions? You know, b-sides or outtakes, possibly those ITunes songs that were circulating....
I'd like to put together sort of an 'expanded' edition of the album for my own usage. Can anyone help me find this info?
Thanks so much!

Posted - 05/09/2004 : 06:22:12 i agree with you on some points but i think silver is a very pleasant change of syle for a song. la la love you is not very good, your right. but tame is very pixieish and i bleed is wierd and interesting. frank black and black francis made different music. if you were expecting the pixies to be the same as frank black i can imagine you were disapointed.....bossanova is very sing-songy and soft. i prefere music which has more thrill to it. yet bossanova is a very good album. 'is she wierd' and 'anna' have very nice melodies to them and 'rock music' has very neat feedback usage in it. yet 'all over the world' and 'alison' annoy me a bit!!! but definately worth a listen is bossanova! |

Posted - 05/09/2004 : 02:39:06 I don't think Doolittle is better. Songs like Tame or I bleed are not very sophisticated, Silver is not very good, La la love you is a joke. There's much more work on Bossanova, it's more mature, more sophisticated.

Best album if you include the Pixies : Bossanova Best FB album : TOTY Best Catholics album : SMYT.
I must say I think that the emotional distance that, in my heart, separates Bossanova from SMYT is very short.

my son is 12 these days, he was listening to the pixies as a baby and digging it
when they come to play nyc we are going together, it may turn out to be his first concert ever

Posted - 04/27/2004 : 10:55:33 I have always thought CoR was very cartoonish. Look at the cover and the cover of the IDWHY singles, for example. He seemed to turn himself into a cartoon for that period before FB&C's came out. He then shed the cartoon to rock. |

Posted - 04/27/2004 : 10:35:39 Cult of Ray is a solid, entertaining rock record. Not much more, not much less. It's a cheeseburger and a milkshake. Frank's last attempt at lookin' for a hit.
I like the production. The guitars are right in your ear. |

Posted - 04/27/2004 : 08:15:14 I got the album when it was released, um, but I was fond of certain tracks such as Massif Centrale because I saw Frank debut them solo that summer.
It is very well constructed. Love it.

Awesome, Mr. Grieves!! Your son will grow up with a deep cultured respect and good taste for rock music, all because of your good parenting! SMYT is definitely one of Frank's best. One of the albums in my collection I play air guitar to. (And a MEAN air guitar, at that!!!)

"Creature Crawling" and "Dance War" are great songs.I think "CC" is one of Franks best songs.Just listen to CoR again.I like all of the songs on the cd.I like it better than Teenager of the year, but that's just my opinion. |

Posted - 04/26/2004 : 15:17:51 See... I haven't really been blown away by CoR yet. The songs that affect me most on the record are two that I never hear anyone mention: "Creature Crawling" and "Dance War".

Posted - 04/23/2004 : 21:16:00 i'm still not tired of it, either and I too continue to play Show Me Your Tears a few times every week. It's not too complex and I don't hear anything "new" in it that I didn't hear the first few times I played it, but I don't care. It never stops sounding good to me.
I'm in a big Frank Black phase. Maybe it's a reaction to all this Pixies stuff goin' on. I've been listening to all the solo and Catholics stuff lately. I drag the whole collection to work each day. Cult of Ray has aged real well for me. And for some reason I've had "Can I Get a Witness" stuck in my head all week. |

SMYT is the only frank black anything I regurarly listen to at the current time, and I'm talking 20 times a week. for 4 months... I have every CD and other stuff. but at the moment SMYT is 99% of anything having to do with FB...
Before SMYT what I listened to FB-wise was more assorted
I am looking forward more to the next FB&C album than I am the hundreds of dollars I've spent on disc-live of the reunion pixies
I won't get to see the Pixies... they only play in big cities far away and the ticket prices are 4 times as much as the catholics...
Even though it screws me over, I am glad they are taking good care of themselves

Posted - 04/23/2004 : 16:16:34 After tracking down most of the aforementioned oddities, I can't imagine why "Preacher's Daughter" and the titel track might have been left off.
But... if that had been on an otherwise perfect album too? Well, my head would have exploded.
Thank you, Charles. Thank you for not making my head combustion fears a reality.

Posted - 04/21/2004 : 00:12:49 well personally I don't care for Show Me Your Tears (the song) and A Dabb'le Do Ya, those songs sound rushed and b-sides material, but when I listen to the other two, I can't help to think that they aren't any less than anything on SMYT

Posted - 04/20/2004 : 14:41:38 Preacher's Daughter should have been on SMYT, don't know why frank left it off, but it's one of his best songs, plus it has big production with kick ass instruments and cool solo's.

Posted - 04/20/2004 : 12:00:49 I think this album has, by far, the best craftsmanship and instrumentation of any Frank Black related album (yes, even Teenager) and fuck me if the songs aren't some of teh best he's ever written. I think anyone who claims they don't like this album needs to put it back in for a few more spins because it's absolutely incredible. And it's looking to me like Honeycomb may very well top Show Me Your Tears; I can't wait till whenever it comes out!
