Posted - 04/15/2004 : 17:38:20 will frank ever get the recognition he deserves as a songwriter unless he blows his brains out. from the conception of the pixies to the the last song on the latest catholics album he's rolled out song after song. his style of writing and genre has changed in time and he's still going stong. but still i dont feel he gets enough "respect" (whatever) from the music inustry, however evil it is. i see this man up there with what many class as the greats (dylan, lennon, blah blah blah).....i read a thread bout people liking elton john...that guys famous the world over (and for what i dont know but thats my own personal opinion), his ass kissed from the queen to the wannadies on flop idol.
i know his musics a bit quirky at times but songs, sweet, killer songs he writes continually.
we're all here for a reason, why we the only ones who seem to get it.

I really wish people would stop comparing Pet Sounds and Smile - they are both excellent VERY different albums. They are both amazing for what they are. The other day i was thinking about how we as a "group" compare music too much as opposed to just appreciate and enjoy it.

Posted - 04/22/2004 : 09:33:06 The larger population of this world dont even know who the Pixies and Frank are. When I wear my Pixies stuff people seriously ask "who are they" and my friend thought FB died when Johnny Cash passed over. He wont get recognition at the scale of Elton John ever, but I qite like it like that. |

Posted - 04/21/2004 : 18:47:41 Yeah, lack of marketing probably has something to do with it, as does the intellectual level. A lot of Frank's songs have references to historical and scientific stuff, and there seems to be a largely anti-intellectual climate among the general public. Basically, Frank is too smart the record-buying public. <g> Besides, if people wanted to hear catchy and accessible music, they wouldn't listen to all those bands made up of young white guys who scream a lot.

Posted - 04/21/2004 : 04:03:17 I think Frank Black's music is very accessible, and that is why I have always been confused by his lack of superstardom. His songs are catchy, and that is pretty much what makes a hit. Just confusing. I don't buy that they way he looks is what's holding him down, either. There have been many succesfull musicians, actors, ect. who do not meet the stereotypical standards of good looks. Lack of marketing, I guess.

Posted - 04/20/2004 : 22:18:39 i'd say that frank black has the kind of career he wants. being recognized by the masses- which really means being pushed on the masses by the media/god/the man is not necessarily a good thing. |

You can dig through the tons and tons of bootlegs and listerner-brewed mixes of what remains of the 66/67 recordings. A lot of the songs seem completed. You can also dig up some of the live 2004 bootlegs, to hear what the completed SMiLE should be.

Posted - 04/17/2004 : 08:49:09 I love SMiLE just as much...I'll wait till it's released to say which one I love more. I think if SMiLE were properly released after Pet Sounds, I'd love it more than Pet Sounds.
In 10 years, I can still guarantee S/T and TOTY will be nowhere near Pet Sounds. Sorry.

OK, you've taken it too far. Pet Sounds should not be taken lightly. Pet Sounds is the greatest album recorded...not even in the same spectrum as TOTY or S/T.

Posted - 04/16/2004 : 22:57:10 Every fan forum dedicated to a musician who's mostly popular on a "cult" level, like The Frank, thinks their guy isn't "getting the recognition he deserves" and all that.
Maybe I used to get caught up in these kinds of thoughts -- I don't remember -- but it isn't something I think about much now. There's a lot of talented musicians not getting the recognition they might deserve. Some of them I've heard of and like, some of them I've never heard of and may never hear of.
It's all just a game. It's like the lottery. Some will hit the really big prize, some just-as-talented folks will hit a smaller (but still impressive) prize, some talents equal to those will hit an even smaller prize, and some fine talents won't win a thing.
Whatever, ya know. For me, I'm just happy to have things I enjoy. I don't think too much about others. |

Posted - 04/16/2004 : 17:50:22 because the Pixies and most of Frank Black's solo work are very different? Don't cry for yourselves, guys.
Plus, seeing as we're a minority, who is to say we're the wrong ones? I mean, there are probably lots of minority groups you think areweird. |

Posted - 04/16/2004 : 13:35:04 Frank has not gotten his "props" from the general public, many critics, and the press--this is true. But I wonder if Frank really longs for praise from these factions. Like when he was invited to play for David Bowie's 50th birthday party at Madison Sq. Garden, that was a gigantic "thumbs up" to Frank, not to mention Bowie covering one of his tunes, a huge compliment. Praise from the master is indeed gratifying. Keep on keepin' on, Frank. We love you and your music. We love your brain!!! |

Posted - 04/16/2004 : 09:10:58 I myself have fallen into a pattern of listening to undeserved artists. It's a great shame that singer/songwriters like Frank Black and Eric Bachmann (Archers of Loaf/Crooekd Fingers) can have a very recognizable first band in their genre, end it and go on doing what they want to be doing. They are geniuses in their own right and it doesn't seem they will ever get the recognition they deserve. Not from the critics, press or general public anyways. But they get it from us in spades and hopefully that keeps them going, and producing what we love hearing from them. |
