we all know, that frank can do incredible things with his voice, and the way he pronounces some words is a highlight of many songs (like "you make me feel so TIRED" in robert onion), but on which songs do you think he does a really good singing (in terms of "classic beautiful")?

i would go for "fu manchu" - also, there is such a nice use of words again (now you are a real GO-GETTER). also, "havalina" comes to my mind. "stupid me" of course, too.

I love his vocal theatrics in SOLID GOLD...very very cool.

And MY FAVORITE KISS displays a very soft and colorful facet of his voice.

I don't know about that but on a radio show in the Spring of 2003, he said he had been working with an opera singer guy.

He had some singing lessons around the time of Pistolero, right?

His voice is much stronger now than it ever was in the Pixies. As he himself said "I am learning to be a singer and not a shouter".

I think he gives his finest vocal performance on frank black francis on caribou and wave of mutilation.

The scream before the quiet part in Sad Punk and the ´starry sky and Utah mountains part´ in Palace Of The Brine float my proverbial floaty thing.

i love it when he goes nutz in parry the wind...'getting patterns from a trekker etc' thats awesome, also love his 'sincere' vocal side showcased especially in i burn today.

Recently I've been enjoying some of his softer tracks, like St. Francis and My Favourite Kiss. songs where he's barely singing just talking.

Then I hear Snake Oil.

"Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!"

Maybe when Frank pushes his vocal chords to almost snap I like him too. Yeah, I do.

Oh, worry not. I'm sure a duet can't be far off. If the Pixies can reform, ANYthing can happen.

irrelevant to the topic but to you chip away boy, saw rich gilbert play and man seeing him play the opening distortion of l.a with a drum stick...totally inspiring.
he's one mean player. puts me to shame and ive been playing for some time. guess thats why he's franks right hand man with the catholics. and the fact that song rocks...makes me humble to have them around

frank when black francis sent shivers the first time i heard TAME.
and the live versions of hey! man can he shout. turn the first few seconds up in your car before kims first bass note and watch those heads of the uneducated public turn.

Ramona is great too. "...the speed we're travel--ling--inggg..." This thread actually brings to mind the one time I actually listened to Frank Black with my mom in her car since I didn't have a CD player in mine(early 90's). She gave me a lot of shit about how his voice sucked (she's a fan of the other Frank...Sinatra) Oh well.

Every time I go around here. I just love that song and he sings it beautifully. It is the first time he sings a bit differently.
IceCream Posted - 03/12/2004 : 15:54:27
Okay, so "Ten Percenter" isn't classic beautiful...but it deserves recognition, hence my post remains unedited. Maybe TP is though.

"Two Reelers".........It's shouting with passion. Not abusive screaming like a lot of metal.

AND IT'D BE DOWNRIGHT INSANITY not to recognise "Ten Percenter", imo.

"Sir Rockaby" and "St Francis", for classical beauty.

"If it takes all night", for the surprise "i'm going to see my baaaaaa-by". He often uses humour in his singing - think about "you got my message of looooooooove-euh" in "Kicked in the taco".

Have some wine, please, don't run away.

It's funny, I don't know why I don't like his falsettos. I love Massif Central, but I can't stand the "Sleep in gardens..." part.
Really, I wish I could like them, and I tried several times to convince myself they weren't so bad, but I failed miserably.
Sorry.

Some of my fave singing moments are in: Speedy Marie,Headache(when he starts whispering),Shazeb Andleeb, most of his acoustic versions and Massif Centrale.
PixieSteve Posted - 03/02/2004 : 09:38:44
I think his voice was much more interesting in the Pixies (not just because of his more common and harsher shouting and screaming)
