we all know, that frank can do incredible things with his voice, and the way he pronounces some words is a highlight of many songs (like "you make me feel so TIRED" in robert onion), but on which songs do you think he does a really good singing (in terms of "classic beautiful")?

i would go for "fu manchu" - also, there is such a nice use of words again (now you are a real GO-GETTER). also, "havalina" comes to my mind. "stupid me" of course, too.

If It Takes All Night when he sings "I'm going to see my baaaaaby" or the falsettos in California Bound. No .. wait!! His Mick Jagger/Stonesy turn in I've Seen Your Picture. The chorus in Out of State?

It's all good.

The falsetto's are beatiful since DITS, he surprised me with that record, vocally wise. The tittle track of DITS has also a nice vocal. Whisper it to me baby!

But now that i think of it.....hehe, there are lots more. I like the "A dandelion next to me" in bartholomew, but horrible day springs to mind too. "No its a haaawwwwble day". And what else...Down in the hole is good too! Snake Oil, the "Wah!!!" at the start always startles me for a second! Hmm...hehe, all my ghosts. "Then i walked into a porno store" you know, totally passe! (Hope i got the words right!) "Smooth Operataaa" in I think Im starting to lose it. Ah well, im sure i'll think of more, but those bits are pure magic bytheway big een!

Unusually, I think his falsettos are better live. Last time I saw him play, his delivery of "Southbound Bevy" was astounding, far better than the version on BLD.

I really don't like his falsettos...
I think my favorite would be St Francis, especially the beginning, when he just starts singing.
Or the man who was too loud ("he still gets arou-ha-ha-ha-hound").

I think his voice was much more interesting in the Pixies (not just because of his more common and harsher shouting and screaming)

Yeah, the falsettos are excellent, as are the low, almost spoken parts, like at the beginning of "Superabound."

It's funny, I don't know why I don't like his falsettos. I love Massif Central, but I can't stand the "Sleep in gardens..." part.
Really, I wish I could like them, and I tried several times to convince myself they weren't so bad, but I failed miserably.
Sorry.

"Sir Rockaby" and "St Francis", for classical beauty.

"If it takes all night", for the surprise "i'm going to see my baaaaaa-by". He often uses humour in his singing - think about "you got my message of looooooooove-euh" in "Kicked in the taco".

"Two Reelers".........It's shouting with passion. Not abusive screaming like a lot of metal.

AND IT'D BE DOWNRIGHT INSANITY not to recognise "Ten Percenter", imo.

Okay, so "Ten Percenter" isn't classic beautiful...but it deserves recognition, hence my post remains unedited. Maybe TP is though.

Ramona is great too. "...the speed we're travel--ling--inggg..." This thread actually brings to mind the one time I actually listened to Frank Black with my mom in her car since I didn't have a CD player in mine(early 90's). She gave me a lot of shit about how his voice sucked (she's a fan of the other Frank...Sinatra) Oh well.

irrelevant to the topic but to you chip away boy, saw rich gilbert play and man seeing him play the opening distortion of l.a with a drum stick...totally inspiring.
he's one mean player. puts me to shame and ive been playing for some time. guess thats why he's franks right hand man with the catholics. and the fact that song rocks...makes me humble to have them around

Recently I've been enjoying some of his softer tracks, like St. Francis and My Favourite Kiss. songs where he's barely singing just talking.

Then I hear Snake Oil.

"Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!"

Maybe when Frank pushes his vocal chords to almost snap I like him too. Yeah, I do.
