Posted - 02/13/2004 : 10:45:28 I apologize in advance for bringing up basic topics, but I'm new here...I have to get it out of my system.
I saw him standing outside First Avenue in Minneapolis waiting for a cab...I approached him and said: "How's it going Charles?" He said: "It's going pretty good."
Then at a later performance, my friend and I went to their tour bus, and knocked on the door...Dave McCaffery came out, we talked for awhile, then asked if Frank was around, and said he was taking a nap.
So, my attempts to meet him have produced mixed results. |

Posted - 03/15/2004 : 14:18:26 He stepped on my arm at the Filmore in SF on the COR tour. It was during Abstract Plain and he even bent down and yelled "sorry" while still playing the guitar.
He actually got pretty pissed at a fan at this show. During Bad Wicked World somebody threw a ball of paper at him and it bounced off his head. I remember him at the edge of the stage leaning over the crowd looking at the guy and mouthing threats and nodding his head at him. As if too say, "c'mon, I'll kick your ass." This moment was heightened by the fact that they were playing Bad Wicked World at that moment. I was prett much at his feet there so, I got a pretty visual of the bit.

Posted - 03/14/2004 : 08:48:42 I got to met him once in Deep Ellum (Dallas, Texas) after a show when the Caholics were touring for their Self-Titled release. He was very nice and talking to the small group of people that hung around for awhile after the show. Then I got to talk to him again after Fry Street Fair in Denton, Texas. That time I shook his hand and said some cheesy remark like "I really appreciate all the music you make. Thanks for writing such great music." He said "I'm glad you like it" and then lots of people started coming back stage and he said "Sorry guys I need to leave" and got in to a car and tried to drive away with lots of people knocking on the window with permanet markers and their Frank Black records or old Pixies stuff. I think that could get annoy but, it was great to shake the mans hand. |

Posted - 03/12/2004 : 16:16:46 I haven't met Frank yet, I tried but security were being the dicks they always are and kicked us out. I did, on the other hand, meet David Lovering before and after the show. Such a nice guy. My friend and I were so nervous, he was talking to someone and didn't want to bother him, if it wasn't for my g/f dragging us and introducing us to him we probably wouldn't have talked to him. After the gig he was selling autographed pics and he remembered my name, we talked for a bit and I asked him if he had anymore glowing pickles left, but he said no. Sad for me...

Posted - 03/10/2004 : 16:15:20 Got to meet him after a FB&C's show in 99. MY buddy was working backstage at the show, so he said he could introduce me later. He was very nice, and as mentioned before, good handshake.
I wanted to not be a total idiot and just stand and stare, so I had come up with a topic to talk about, which was how great him and John Doe sounded singing together (they had done a duet of 'I Need Peace' at a show before) and would they ever do something official together some time? He was like "yeah, John Doe, cool guy." And that was about it.
It was nice to actually meet him, but the circustances felt weird, and it was clear that he wanted to get paid for the show and get on his bus.
The strange things was, the show was at a community center, and Frank was freely walking around the floor of the auditorium during the opening band and set changes, and very few people even noticed him. He was just getting a soda at the concession stand and waiting in line like a regular customer, even though I know they had refreshments and beer backstage for the bands...too funny, almost like he just wanted to see if anyone would have the guts to come up to him! |

Posted - 03/10/2004 : 14:30:42 Yeah, but who's met the amazing Scientific Phenomenalist? David Lovering is a really cool guy in person. I've shaken Frank's hand as he walked by a bunch of other people shaking hands, and I've met most of the 1st round of catholics. A friend of mine asked frank to pet frank's dog once after a show. I think he got told 'no'. |

Posted - 03/10/2004 : 13:44:07 Although I did not meet him in the flesh, I did speak with Frank over the phone back in 1994. He was cool, clever, friendly and funny. That same day, a good friend of mine was blessed with an interview with THE MAN himself for a local access cable TV show he'd been doing. Frank and I had chatted about the upcoming interview that evening, unbeknownst to my friend. When Frank walked in for the interview, he said "How is Linda, and where is my letter?" My friend's mind was blown momentarily. It was a major rush for me, and a wonderful memory I recall often. |

Posted - 03/07/2004 : 11:25:25 Umm, sorry to detract and go back to the origin of the thread here but I met him & he was very funny and interesting and seemed to be sincere in taking an interest in my inane babbling.
Made the fact of me doubting my own sanity and powers of judgement for 2 hours in the cold seem worthwhile...
Considering that I still have the ticket stub in my wallet, I reckon that its well worth trying to meet him if you get the chance (or even in my case; engineering the chance!)

Posted - 02/29/2004 : 17:55:47 About 6-7 years ago , myself and my partner were putting a cedar shingle roof on a cottage on Cape Cod, Mass. It was one of the first few really hot days of summer and we werent used to the heat yet. Around mid-morning when we took our break, a guy shambles over from the house next door. We had the truck doors open with a old Grateful Dead CD just playing over and over. My partner knew who he was and introduced me. I didn't know anything about him, or his music. He however was very nice and curious about the work, materials, etc., and asked to look around. He came back at noon time with a cooler full of ice cold beers and homemade Italian subs. Really good ones with chewy bread, hot mustard and, oil and vinegar Turns out the house was his dads and he was down with his ex and a couple of dogs visiting and hanging out. |

"And her head has no room."
I have been forced to relate my story of how I touched FB's shoe: It was a smoke-filled club on a Friday evening. The warmth of the building comforted me as I escaped the winter chill outside. I approached the bartender, ordered a gin and tonic, sat on a bar stool, and observed the appreciative few that had gathered to the show early. Then I saw The Man. He was standing in the corner, across the sea of bar smog. I thought to myself: I have to touch his shoe. I began walking at an accelerating pace across the club. Halfway, I realized something - he would be frightened if I approached him and prostrated myself to touch his shoe. I had to turn to plan B. I got on my hands and knees, and began crawling through the expanse of wooden, beer/alcohol-sticky floor. I approached The Man's shoe, at long last. I gazed at it with that gaze of amazement/embarrassment/confusion/alcohol/fondness. I extended my unsteady hand to make contact with his shoe. I did it! I did it. I will sleep tonight, I said to myself, I will sleep tonight.

Posted - 02/19/2004 : 01:13:33 I actually got to spend an evening with him at a bar here in Pittsburgh, PA several years back. He was touring with a friend of mine at the time. We stayed till closing time if I recall correctly and he mentioned being a little hungover at the show the following evening. Pleasant conversation about music and other things I can no longer recall. He bought quite a few rounds of drinks and if I ever get the chance to hang out with him again I think I owe him a couple. I didnt try to touch his shoes. Maybe next time! |

In a follow up, the first time I met him was rather strange, too. During the show (at which I was front and center) I was a few feet from Frank. Standing next to me was a short figure wearing a hooded sweatshirt, so I could not see his/her face. After the show, on my way out I saw this hooded figure talking to my friend Marty by the front door. (Marty Nedich played bass in the Kelley Deal 6000, one of the coolest guys you'll ever meet) The hooded figure left as I was approaching Marty. As I got to him he asked "So did you get to talk to Kim?" Yeah. You can guess who was standing next to me the whole show. And I had to say "No, Marty. I didn't talk to Kim." But I met Frank afterwards. This was in the fall of '98.
"And her head has no room."
i heard a story like this before, about kim goin to a show. so, wtf, was all that stuff about them not talkin bullshit? or did they not talk when they first broke up and then started talking again? it seems strangely sweet.
Well, she was kind of incognito. And afterwards she quickly chatted at our mutual friend Marty and then was off. So just because she came to the show doesn't necessarily mean that they were talking, I guess. She just snuck into the crowd. Pretty cool, I think. And this is where I insert an emoticon:
"And her head has no room." |

Posted - 02/17/2004 : 10:35:44 I met the man once too. It was after a show in Toronto on the tour supporting the first solo album. Me and my buddy decided we wanted to meet him after the show. Reverand Horton Heat were openning and when we went backstage we ran into them and hung out with them for a while. It was extra cool too because I was only 15 and they gave me a whole bunch of beers. We went back in the club after, both loaded and went up to him. My loser friend started blabbing how his music impacted him and helped through crap so much and stuff which I could tell was boring him to death. But I didn't do much better all I could say was you kick ass a million different ways. He was super cool though considering we were 2 fifteen year old drunk kids. His wife was there too and mentioned see it's guys like these why you make the big bucks. I was trying to be sarcastic and said "nah, it's not us I taped all your albums" but he didn't seem to find it too funny. He was still super nice though. |

Posted - 02/17/2004 : 03:52:32 I met the man 4 times, always after gigs : twice in Rennes, once in Paris and once in Niort. Basically I would say he is a rather shy guy, showing respect as long as you respect him. All of us who had the opportunity to meet him must have felt nervous and embarrassed. He certainly feels this embarrassment and of course there is nothing natural in such encounters. The 1st time I really met him was in Rennes. Someone took a picture of Frank Black and I shaking hands in the Indian Wrestling way. We have strange faces on this pic because the flash took a very long time to operate. We both smile and have that anxious look saying : "What's going on with this camera? How long are we going to stand there smiling stupidly?" (this picture is actually 1 meter wide, hanging in my bedroom. Frank laughed frankly when he saw it and signed it after a gig in Niort last year) He was extremely patient and after that he let me in the tour bus. There, the whole band signed the inside sleeve of my "Frank Black and the Catholics" vinyl. Frank took a close and long look at it, just like he had never seen this object before. We talked for a while.
The last time I saw him was in Paris, after the Bataclan gig. He was loading the tour van with all the music gear boxes as usual. One of these boxes, a large one, began to roll down the sidewalk and was obviously about to fall in the gutter and on one of Frank's ankles when .... (to be continued)
