Posted - 05/18/2009 : 01:10:44 I once read that the most important songs on an album are the first and the last tracks. What do you think works best on FB's records?
For me, I love Bad Harmony as track one. Really sets the tone for the rest of Pistolero. And as a final track, I love Last Stand Of Shazeb Andleeb, a beautiful coda to Cult Of Ray.
Your thoughts...

That must be right. No one's even needed to mention Debaser yet, the most astonishing opener by anyone anywhere.

cecilia ann is an amazing surf song to open what is essentially one of the greatest surf albums of the '90s (or any decade, in my opinion).

Listening to Bossa earlier today driving in the glorious sunshine I saw what you mean. Ana too could have kicked things off with that perfectly weighted opening.

Posted - 06/08/2009 : 13:16:53 I found it interesting that Sing For Joy was the first track on the leaked version of Honeycomb - but was eventually segued as the final track on the official version. I think it actually worked really well as either, but I am probably more accepting of it now as the perfect closer to HC.

Posted - 05/23/2009 : 09:23:46 I always kinda thought that Los Angeles would make a great closer. Maybe not to the album, but to a film. The soaring strings and the gentle sweeps on the guitar evoke the generic two-friends-shown-from-the-back-walking-home-together-in-the-sunset.
The 15-minute Planet Of Sound on Frank Black Francis is the best closer, simply because it couldn't go anywhere else.

Posted - 05/19/2009 : 09:42:19 Frank has the best openers. Can't think of any FB record with a bad first song (OK, I'm not the hugest fan of Nadine). My fave has to be The Marsist though. God I love this track.

For me, nothing sets an album's tone like the opening strums of Selkie Bride on Honeycomb. I like the mood those first few notes put me in. And nothing ties up an album like the epic Sing For Joy.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.
i agree. maybe it's because they're the two best songs on the album!
los angeles/don't you rile em is perfect as well. the former for above (WAY above) stated reasons, and the latter because it's short, majestic and uplifting.
nadine HAS to be at the beginning because it sounds nothing like the rest of the record.

Posted - 05/18/2009 : 12:37:17 I suppose you answer the question in your own post... Captain Pasty is such a brilliant song to open with! |

Posted - 05/18/2009 : 07:45:38 As a sucker for ballads and goodbye songs I like Shazeb Andleeb and Fields of Marigold for closers.
I think I like the song Captain Pasty the most [] of all the openers, although there are some strong statements in All My Ghosts, The Marsist, The Sues and Pong, which is probably the correct way to start. I would have liked MIB or COR as track 1. Pong is often too much, too soon.
[Your Mouth into Mine would have made a fine and logical opener, and I don't know if it was ever explained why it was moved.]

Posted - 05/18/2009 : 06:58:19 Pie in the Sky is probably the biggest exclamation point to an album that I can think of. Fast. Short. Bam. It's there and gone before you've had time to clap your hands and stomp your feet accordingly.
For openers, nothing quite grabs me in the same way, but I'd have to give Velvety honourable mention for setting the tone and pace of DW and really drawing you in.

Posted - 05/18/2009 : 05:55:32 I'm gonna start the album with Blast Off from now on. I'm a bit biased towards I've Seen Your Picture (I'm a picture editor so it's got some extra meaning for me). Not sure it's really an opener though. Blast Off's the one that got a special friend of mine into FB. She loved the line 'Cos city hall all are freaks and the coffee is getting weak', she's a public sector worker.

Posted - 05/18/2009 : 03:14:11 From the same record I like Pong/Pie. The quick, short opener and closer make the whole 22 song bohemoth light on its feet.
But from different records; Los Angeles because it had the added pressure of being a post-Pixies statement of intent. And Dog In The Sand's a great unself-conscious closer. But if you mean BF as well as FB I'd go with Bluefinger because it works beautifully as a closer on so many levels.
I didn't much like Blast Off as an opener. DITS's otherwise perfect to me. And I could lose the Black Riders too.

Posted - 05/18/2009 : 02:30:34 Great topic, my favoutite opener is Velvety, kicks off DW with great energy gives you an impression of the feel of the record.
Favourite closer is Manitoba on SMYT, absolutley epic ending. I dont know if it a sax or a trumpet that sounds after the "i have seen the face of God, and i have dearly paid" but it is beautiful and pretty euphoric. Love that record. |
