Posted - 08/17/2007 : 15:09:16 Is there any resource (old interviews, websites, etc.) documenting which Frank Black solo songs Joey Santiago played lead guitar on? I'm guessing he played on most of the first solo album..
Thanks to anyone that can help! |

Posted - 11/13/2024 : 11:14:51 I believe he does mainly strange sound fx on Dog in the Sand, to be honest There are some weird guitar pedal fx on Blast Off and Robert Onion
The lead guitar on Robert Onion is Dave Phillips I believe

Gonna be a long while till we're up to those albums...But trying to do a deep dive on the very first solo album. I'm amazed this info isn't anywhere! I know Joey's style is specific but I'm not sure I can totally tell if it's him or not just by listening. I'd also imagine his Catholics work is a little different from Pixies style. |

Posted - 11/13/2024 : 08:10:17 I also remember 30 years ago people referring to TLM as the first solo FB album, and they were saying it disparagingly, but I'm like "that's amazing!" |

They also seem surprised with the crowds reaction to the Bossa/Trompe-tour.
Yeah, that's your best stuff, Frank!

Posted - 11/12/2024 : 13:28:57 It is insane people (including Frank?) have said Trompe showed some sort of songwriting decline in Frank if they were literally planning some of those FB debut songs for it too. It's like the best stuff he's ever written. |

Posted - 11/12/2024 : 11:08:19 I would guess he played on any songs that carried over from the Pixies. So Brackish Boy, since it was demoed for Trompe. And possibly Los Angeles, I remember an old interview with Kim where the interviewer heard them playing a song at soundcheck that he would later recognize as Los Angeles. I think it was the same interview where she said they had songs for half of two albums, but not enough for one or the other. Or I could be completely misremembering all of this, so anyone feel free to correct me. |

Posted - 11/12/2024 : 08:20:27 I meant besides Hang On To Your Ego which we all know. In this video I uploaded, Frank says Joey was "around for all of the recordings and all of the mixing" hanging out:

That's so funny. I just never thought of Joey when listening to any of these songs because this album has such a different style than Pixies. But now I could kind of hear it. |

Posted - 08/21/2007 : 03:16:58 It's just one of those things. Some musical partnerships compliment each other so well.
It should go without saying that I adore fb's solo work, but I'd be very sorry if Mr Santiago doesn't join him for further works. |

Posted - 08/21/2007 : 00:59:32 I remember reading on this forum that "His Kingly Cave" (the DW version) has Joey on electric guitar. Which didn't surprise me at all. The solo to "His Kingly Cave" reminded me of the solo to "Alec Eiffel".
Man, Alec Eiffel. What a great song that was. |

Posted - 08/20/2007 : 07:47:27 I agree totally about Los Angeles. Parts of Ramona sound like Dig For Fire to me- Right after "it was alright..." Joey's also in the video for Hang on to Your Ego playing the solo. And the lead on Places Named After Numbers always reminded me of some of Joey's parts on Bossanova (that song could almost be on Bossanova). Those are just my strong hunches.
JS is credited on DITS for guitar on Blast Off, Robert Onion and Dog in the Sand.
He is credited for additional guitars on Devil's Workshop. I heard an interview from that time where FB praised Joey for his solo on Modern Age. I assume he plays other parts on that record as well.
He is also credited for additional guitar on SMYT. And to my ears that's JS playing the really rough solo on This Old Heartache around 2 minutes in. Again, I'm sure he plays more on this record too. |

Posted - 08/17/2007 : 21:12:25 first album liner notes just list joey in the "additional guitars" department along with morris tepper and david sardy (but he is listed first).

Posted - 08/17/2007 : 15:19:34 Okay, here it is.
he played lead on 8, 20, 21, 22, and second lead on 15, so that's Sir Rockaby, Pure Denizen of the Citizens Band, Bad, Wicked World, Pie in the Sky, and 2nd lead on Hostess with the Mostest. That's just on TOTY, as for the yellow/orange album, I dunno.
It's 1969, okay. |

Posted - 08/17/2007 : 15:14:16 i know that little booklet-ey thing, whatever you call it, for TOTY that has all the lyrics, says which songs Joey played on, might be the same for the first album.
