A while back someone posted a topic about alternative music influences, and I know people always talk about how the Pixies influenced Nirvana. Being from the Northwest, and a teenager in the early nineties, Nirvana music really awakened me to stuff beyond junk food and sports. I didn't catch on to the Pixies until a few years after listening to Nirvana. The Pixies and Frank Black are 2 of my favorite bands but I am not sure if I would have ever heard of them in high school if it were not for Nirvana.
Any thoughts on connections between Charles and Kurt, personal or objectively. |

Yes, Pukkelpop and another festival in Rotterdam, but I forgot its name.

You can actually hear Cactus playing live in the background at one of the festivals.
Apparently, Kurt set a fire extinguisher off when The Pixies were playing at some festival!

I was slightly pissed off there was no Frank footage in the vid "The Year Punk Broke". I doubt it had anything to do with Sonic Youth being behind the camera, though. |

i remember reading somewhere that kurt switched the nameplate on a table that was meant for frank and his girlfriend at the time with one for the ramones, so the ramones had a table for 2 and frank had a table for 4, cant remember exactly where it was i think some festival in europe, |

That's weird really 
I'm sure they met circa december 1991, when Kurt saw the Pixies on stage for the first and last time. I can't remember where I've read it, but I think it was after the 22 december gig, in Los Angeles. |

Back to Nirvana and Kurt, I don't think there can be a thread about Nirvana's influence without mentioning Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden. So there, I mentioned them. |

I don't know anywhere around here that'll be showing it, but I'm intrigued, I'll seek it out somewhere. I've heard it would have been better as a CD but I'm thinking I can wear my sunglasses and just relax in the cinema while listening to Kurt. Eery!
Talking of Kurt:
When Pitchfork i-rock savior, Frank Black, visited Grimey's Record Shop in Nashville, Kurt learned that they both share a love of Jim Nabors. And you thought they were only song lyrics. Bah!

i dont even think Nirvana is on the same league as Pixies, yea i mean kurt liked them and there both rock and roll bands but, Pixies have way more substance than a nirvana song. In my oppinion

I don't think most care much, we just roll our eyes and move on to the rest of the article looking for something new and different.
I was just 'splaining why we're quick to make a joke. It's not to jump on a new forum member so much as a knee jerk reaction at this point. I'm glad that so many have pointed out that were it not for Kurt, they would have never gotten into Frank (not until Fight Club anyways ;)

Yeah, it's annoying ... but at the same time, Frank's just gonna keep putting out this good music, and we get to enjoy it. Who cares what these writers are saying? A couple decades from now, when his career is over, they'll suddenly realize what an amazing and influential solo artist he was, and they'll say his work on "Bluefinger" or with Schwarma was the big influence on [insert wildly popular artist of 2026 here]. It just doesn't matter. Enjoy the music.

a follow up -
I'm happy that Dex drew some attention from Jack's comment and I'm also glad that Kurt's comment drew attention to FRANK
it does sort of floor me how much attention an artist can get when a big-time record seller mentions someone's name.
Another guy that got a lot of attention from Kurt was Daniel Johnston. Kurt happened to wear one of his t-shirts once...or twice...or thrice...and on the cover of Rolling Stone....and apparently that just drew all kinds of attention to Daniel
from what I gather from the movie about Daniel was that just set off a feeding frenzy of people trying to find out who he was and then trying to get him signed. and so the Pixies and Frank and Daniel owe Kurt a big thanks for shining a spotlight on them
it may be a minor annoyance for me to have to hear Kurt referenced EVERY SINGLE TIME I READ ABOUT FRANK!! but - it was the shout out that was heard around the world you know?? so ..... great!!!
I doubt Frank or Daniel are bothered by such trivialities

another one of my all time favorites next to Frank is Dexter Romweber
Dex headed up the Flat Duo Jets - which was just him and a drummer (Crow). and Crow is no longer with him - but he still plays mainly just him and a drummer
Well some time ago (within a year or two) Jack White happened to mention that Dex was a big influence on him
now it seems I can not read a single thing about Dex without that being mentioned. it's become a permanent fixter to his name. "Dex Romweber.....who Jack White once mentioned as an influence....da da da" and over and over and over again
I have mixed feelings about it - because anything that gets Dex some extra attention - GREAT!!! but at the same time it's like "come ON ALLREADY!!!"
Dex was doing the White Stripes thing when Jack was just a boy wearing short pants
I showed my gal some old Dex film tonight and immediately she drew the comparison to White Stripes - but she had it all backwards - she thought Dex was copying them!!
anyways it's not the Kurt thing that annoys me with Frank the most. Though it is up there to be sure. It's a close second. The thing that annoys me the most is the obligatory "and Kim Deal....who went on to even GREATER success with the Breeders!!! with their smash hit Cannonball!!...da da da"
I mean come on allready!! Cannonball??!! Okay I'll admit it had a very catchy hook. That baseline is really infectious. But I need to hear Cannonball right now about as much as I need to hear Monkey Gone To Heaven. All Frank did after the Pixies broke up was churn out incredible tune after tune after tune - and album after album after album...just snaking along writing one opus after another.....Wizard of Oz followed by The Godfather
but sorry Frank ... you didn't write Cannonball...guess you just didn't measure up some how

my 5 cents:
kurt cobain was a very good rock-songwriter. the 3 people that formed nirvana were very good, creative and talented musicians, and supplemented each other very well. just like police, dinosaur jr., pixies, 70ies pink floyd and some more.
thats it for me.

Personally, I think it's amazing how "viral" music can be. Figuring out the influences of favorites is the best way to find new favorites. Although I confess I do feel ANCIENT when I hear of all the people who discovered the Pixies via Nirvana.
So, for all the young 'uns out there, the derision is probably part of us "gen xers" being dyspeptic and bitter.
Time to tell the neighbor kids to turn their damn Fall Out Boy down, so I can peacefully listen to Black Flag on my Victrola.

Dave Grohl went to my high school for a year. Of course he's one of the best!
I guess if these articles turn new people on to Pixies and FB, then maybe we shouldn't make quick jokes about them. It just seems slightly insulting, especially now that Pixies have had a hugely successful set of reunion tours - I'm pretty sure anyone interested in this genre of music has heard of them by now.

I still listen to Nirvana albums frequently and Incesticide is one of those albums I have worn out from over listening, just like some of the Pixies and Frank Black albums. Also, for better or worse, I think Nirvana made it possible for a lot Northwest bands to make a living through their art. |

i agree i also get tired of almost every story about the pixies refer to the nirvana thing, and although i heard nirvana first the pixies and foremost frank black is by far my favorite music of all time and i listen to pixies f.b. records regularly and i can't remember the last time i listened to a nirvana records, i still think kurt and nirvana were among the most talented of our time, i think dave grohl is in his own right one of the best, not just foo fighters but the probot cd was great. |
