Posted - 06/30/2007 : 04:11:44 I really like the production on HC, its not "flat" its mellow.
I think people were expecting something with a big sound after the catholics, but I couldn't think of HC being prodouced in any other way.

Posted - 06/16/2007 : 11:23:44 Jon, Thanks for the input, as always.
Richard Lloyd described his studio to me once, and it sounded like a VERY small setup. Is it a comfortable room to track in?
I know it's fine for vocals (obviously), but I got the feeling that for tracking loud guitars and/or drums it's not ideal. The sound Richard got on the RFTT Redux CD he did there always sounded thin and harsh to me, which I chalked up to his relatively recent propensity to use Line 6 modeling amps in lieu of true AC30s (possibly so he can track at lower volume?).
Also, any personal thoughts on Lloyd's decidedly oddball "farewell" to Television in Central Park today and reports of him huffing Nitrus by the truckload in between songs (and reportedly unhinged rants) at his recent Knitting Factory solo show?
It smacks of an ill-conceived attempt to get a short burst of worldwide press for his new CD, while effectively quashing the long-awaited LP of new TV songs that have been festering for a few years...

I also like the "Fort Wayne" song, and I actually think that has great commercial potential.
I don't think I have any great thoughts to illuminate you people on those subjects, so I'll let it go at that. Hope all of you and Mister Frank Black all have a great Father's Day.

Hey, wait - this album hasn't been released yet. You do promise to buy a copy when it come out, right? ;)

Posted - 06/15/2007 : 19:04:31 "You Can't Break A Heart And Have It"---I think that's the title, I don't have a tracklist for the album---is my favorite, hands down. But there's plenty more that I dig.
"Atlantis" was not approached much differently from the rest of the album, aside from the fact that I had to go to New York and record Al Franken's vocal in Richard Lloyd's studio (Thanks Richard). Same place we recorded the unused duet from Shemekia Copeland on "Highway To Lowdown."
Now that's enough, I'm done for today/tonight.

Posted - 06/15/2007 : 18:47:17 Hi Jon - if you check in again, I always wondered... Was the song 'Atlantis' different, production-wise, than the other songs from that session? I always thought it sounded amazing (the vocals and drums). Not that the other songs didn'tsound great , but this one really stood out somehow. |

Posted - 06/15/2007 : 15:06:41 Deep confidential communications? Which songs give you a hard-on? I like the title track and "Angels Come to Comfort You," but there are also days I like the punk songs at the top of the album. Which direction do you lean?
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Posted - 06/15/2007 : 13:12:33 Mr. Tiven, I'm intrigued to hear that you like "Bluefinger." I (and I'm sure many others here) would love to hear an expanded version of your thoughts on the album.

Posted - 06/15/2007 : 12:43:17 I like Bluefinger, and I think Lemhouse did a fine job. But frankly, I never know what a producer does on a record. The title encompasses a lot of jobs and some people are like a musical director, some are more like an engineer who oversees, and some people are all vibe. I'm more of a md/vibe guy than an engineer, and I tend to hire talented engineers who I entrust to make sure everything sounds like it should.
I mean, I can get into sound manipulation and all that stuff, but I need a whole lot of time and a reasonable budget to make that kind of a record and most of the records I produce simply don't have either. So I try to capture a musical moment and make sure it's special.
Regarding the whiskey comment, I haven't tasted the stuff since I was a teenager so I wouldn't know. There wasn't any around the studios, but I'm glad to hear the music interacts well with the stuff.
Weed----well, that's another story. I don't puff and tell. Don't you know that stuff's illegal here in the U.S.?

Posted - 06/15/2007 : 10:21:34 I prefer you in reasonable mode. Some good points made. I wasn't aware you'd produced some of the earlier rockier FB. Would be good to get your professional opinion of Mark Lemhouse's work on Bluefinger. Then this thread might actually have a point save the noises.
You must have enjoyed Jose's whiskey comment. Speak up if you did.

Posted - 06/15/2007 : 08:23:31 I'm not up for insults, but I can offer insight.
I cannot speak for any of the other producers, but when I make a record with Frank Black, my concern is to make the record he wants to hear. Any of you who have examined my other work can testify knows that I have a wide range, a little heavy on the blues and soul side, but I have an allergic reaction to any music which is not authentic. So I try to bring out that which is singular and unique in the artist I produce. At the same time, I have some discussion with the artist as to what kind of album they want to make.
I have my own distinct musical personality, but it only comes out as needed, or when asked. The four cds which I have produced and are coming out later this year (Garnet, Mason, Betty and Ellis) are all co-written by me, and are in four different genres (rock, blues, soul, and gospel). The reason I posted these earlier is because I thought it might be interesting for some of you to see what I do with other artists in other situations, and I admit with these four cds, my musical personality is far more pro-active than it is with Frank Black. With Frank I make sure everything is set for HIS musical personality to take charge, whereas with these other records it is a complete musical collaboration.
So if that's what you're looking for, you got it. Fire away. I can take it, I dish it back, you can knock me all you like but I know I brought some stuff out of Frank Black that he wanted to come out and I consider both albums to be great successes on many levels. It's not a competition. Those of you who are familiar with my earlier productions of said artist ("At The End of the World," "Hate Me," "Oddballs" and "Men In Black") know that I can rock as hard as anybody.
I'll be back.

bye, Sir Tiven to you
Or is that POOH-DUCER??? Sorry, base humor creeps in at this hour
On a serious note, I agree that you can't "COMPARE" one producer against another when the albums in question do differ greatly in style...a subjective thing, as is one's preferences in production. I personally LOVED honeycomb, bar three tracks, although thought the production on sing for joy took from a great song. I was terribly dissapointed by Fastman Raiderman, mainly due to the production, where I thought great songs were ruined and made wanky and predictable. Bluefinger from what I've heard so far is more my cup of tea, FB always had sonic energy and it looked like it was in decline from Honeycomb on, but it's climbing steadfast from Christmass on.
Saying that, from personal experience Mr Tiven isn't a bastion of respect for FB Fans' subjectivity. I remember being asked to remove my thread announcing my disapointment with FM/RM by Tiven himself. Of course I did not, as a matter of principle, given this forum is for those who love the music of FB, not as a PR medium for those who work with the great man... Charles that is, NOT Mr. Tiven (in my opinion of course)
Besides, I'm cagey about people who call "unashamedly" call themselves "dog-people" ... I prefer "animal-people", it's less discriminatory, and I LOVE Kittens |
