Posted - 05/05/2007 : 16:36:39 Speedy Marie would have to be my all time favorite, so far b/c I have not heard everything. But everyday I am hooked on a different song. TOTY is the CD I am hooked on right now. BLD was last week. Next week, who knows...

Posted - 04/26/2007 : 14:46:26 I too had a similar experience with FB&C's. I clearly remember the excitement I felt when I first bought Pistolero. The first track, Bad Harmony said it all. This is what I suspect the band must have been going through, eventually arriving in a place where the sound got better after time. The song says it all.

Wow. Off topic, but I remember when FB&C ST first came out. I got it a few days before the release date, and was walking home holding the CD in my hands, memorizing all the track titles before I got home...delighted by the obscure and slightly cheap looking presentation of the artwork, but loving it all the same. I rushed upstairs to my bedroom, broke into a 12 pack of Newcastle, and spun the cd. SOLID GOLD grabbed me by the balls (or maybe I did, and thought it was the song because of all the beer by that point in the album). It is still my favorite Frank Black album. This album marks the point where he really began, I think, to experiment with his voice, and has since displayed so much more power, range, and characteristic than anything previous to FB&C's ST. NOT to say he was bad before that point...he just got different with his 4th album.

That's a damn good song. It's one of the ones on a playlist I made a couple weeks ago for listening to at bedtime. It's a bunch of FB's mellower tunes. Brian listed a couple others earlier today -- "Fast Man" and "I'll Be Blue." I've been having trouble sleeping lately, so I made this playlist, and I play it every night at bedtime, and again when I wake up at 3 a.m. I find myself listening very closely to The Man's vocals, which is nearly hypnotizing, and that usually does the trick. It's not that the music is boring, but it grabs me in such a way that I forget to think about all those things that are keeping me awake.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Posted - 04/21/2007 : 03:43:24 Good choice, Awestruck, with 'Stupid Me'. Not a song that's often mentioned here, maybe because it's atypical for FB and, I suppose, a bit of a pastiche. But the vocals are great, really heartfelt, and sometimes brings tears to my eyes. What a wuss!!

Posted - 04/20/2007 : 13:54:39 I still have not heard all of his songs, but I recently heard BLD, TOTY, and Bossavona. I am just "awestruck" by his voice. As far as the Pixies go, Tame and the grunt in Hey gets me every time I hear it. I like to hear him sing so softly it seems like a whisper in Tame.
There are so many songs to choose from but the song I listen to just to sit back and concentrate on his voice is Stupid Me. He doesn't even need music behind that one. Fast Man is another song I love to just hear his voice. It is just so smooth.
But I agree there are songs that are not as favorable as others, but the poetry of the song is too lovely to just overlook.

I found that word jarring the first few times I heard it in that song, but you're right, he sings it so well. My other favorite vocal part of that song is where he sings "Whispering the name that rhymes with dead." Listen to how his voice cracks on "dead." It's as if his own heart is "broke in two."
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Posted - 04/20/2007 : 03:47:11 California bound - still unbelievable to me:
"don't let your mind chase you like a hooouuuuuund..."
in the last chorus, when he smoothly transforms the high voice into the raw voice during "hoooouuuuund". with all that odd timing.
and the screaming on marsist. and the mixture of the laid back/hysterical voices in los angeles.
