I like his vocals best on the slower songs. Two of my favorite vocals are "Coastline" and "I'll Be Blue." The second half of "My Life Is In Storage" has a heart-wrenching vocal, too. And after trying my damnedest to like FMRM as much as his other albums, the one thing I've discovered is that if you focus on his voice and ignore how relatively boring the songs are, it's really an enjoyable listen. I've never read that he recorded that album to show off his voice, but it seems it could easily be the case.
And I know the question didn't include the Pixies, but one of the very first things I think of when I think of FB's voice is his screaming on "Tame."
Talk about a dynamic singer -- hard to believe it's the same guy who sings both "Tame" and "Dog in the Sand."
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

it's all in the timbre of his voice, I think it's sounds pretty other people may not agree. there are examples everywhere:
-Jane is the Queen of Love: I hear the phoneline and I hope it isn't you....JANE!!!!!! -The original I Will Run After You -The Happening -Captain Pasty -Headache

I notice his voice must on songs where he sounds cool and confident like Massif Centrale 'I saw the way you grinned, yeah you were giving me the sign.' But then his vocal in Elijah really gets me. But then again I love the wig out in Threshold Apprehension. He uses his voice uncommonly.

Seconded.
Also - "He played piano really fuckin' good" sums up just about everything. Who else can sing "fuckin'" like Frank?

California bound - still unbelievable to me:
"don't let your mind chase you like a hooouuuuuund..."
in the last chorus, when he smoothly transforms the high voice into the raw voice during "hoooouuuuund". with all that odd timing.
and the screaming on marsist. and the mixture of the laid back/hysterical voices in los angeles.

I found that word jarring the first few times I heard it in that song, but you're right, he sings it so well. My other favorite vocal part of that song is where he sings "Whispering the name that rhymes with dead." Listen to how his voice cracks on "dead." It's as if his own heart is "broke in two."
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

I still have not heard all of his songs, but I recently heard BLD, TOTY, and Bossavona. I am just "awestruck" by his voice. As far as the Pixies go, Tame and the grunt in Hey gets me every time I hear it. I like to hear him sing so softly it seems like a whisper in Tame.
There are so many songs to choose from but the song I listen to just to sit back and concentrate on his voice is Stupid Me. He doesn't even need music behind that one. Fast Man is another song I love to just hear his voice. It is just so smooth.
But I agree there are songs that are not as favorable as others, but the poetry of the song is too lovely to just overlook.

Good choice, Awestruck, with 'Stupid Me'. Not a song that's often mentioned here, maybe because it's atypical for FB and, I suppose, a bit of a pastiche. But the vocals are great, really heartfelt, and sometimes brings tears to my eyes. What a wuss!!

My choice (today) is 'Pan American Highway.'
Every time I hear it I am stunned at how beautiful it is.

Steak 'n' Sabre: "Right down in the shallo-o-o-o-o-o-ows!"
Dog Gone: "That's to carry me OOOOOO----onnnnnnn!"
Pie in the Sky: "THAT'S AN ORDER!!!"
Adda Lee: "The lake sings.... and the dogs don't... they are QUIET... for Adda Lee"

There's a start.

Hey there, Rocknfire. Kind and Queen of Siam is a great choice, althought that amazing guitar work by Lyle Workman in the begining and ending of that song is what first comes to mind when I think about it. Favourite fb vocal. Steak 'n sabre for me. |

That's a damn good song. It's one of the ones on a playlist I made a couple weeks ago for listening to at bedtime. It's a bunch of FB's mellower tunes. Brian listed a couple others earlier today -- "Fast Man" and "I'll Be Blue." I've been having trouble sleeping lately, so I made this playlist, and I play it every night at bedtime, and again when I wake up at 3 a.m. I find myself listening very closely to The Man's vocals, which is nearly hypnotizing, and that usually does the trick. It's not that the music is boring, but it grabs me in such a way that I forget to think about all those things that are keeping me awake.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Thanks for the kind words Velvety. Lyle Workman sure is something else, especially when he was a Catholic. I have always emphasized to fellow fans how important Workman was for that time in Black's career.Another favorite vocal would be His Kingly Cave. "yes, very nice". |
