Posted - 04/17/2007 : 16:20:20 Apologies in advance if this is going to be a dup thread, but I don't feel like rummaging around with the search feature trying to find out right now, state that I'm in.
For all you guitar-slingers. Which F.B. riff do you find yourself coming back to most often? For me, I'd say with certainty it would have to be that riff at the beginning of 'Fazer Eyes'. Literally every time I tune my guitar, I play a C scale, a blues scale, maybe another scale or so, and then the intro riff from Fazer Eyes before playing anything else. Even when I'm plugged in and warming up for a show, it's just automatic. I must say that I also very much dig that neat little riff in blast off. There are heaps others that I utterly dig but I will wait and see if anyone responds before further elaborating. I sure hope someone gets to tabbing the new B.F. soon because if they don't then I am gonna start doing it by ear.

Posted - 05/17/2007 : 04:03:10 I can't play guitar, and never will be able to. I have short, fat fingers. But that doesn't prevent me from noodling around on the piano. So far, I've learned "I'll Be Blue," which you'll find me "playing" in every store/bar/house I come across that has a piano. There's nothing quite like bringing the man's music to life with your own hands.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Posted - 05/15/2007 : 16:24:31 I love Czar - i remember seeing him play it on TV and watching the video over and over to get what he was doing - i've probably put a lot of people off that song from just playing it over and over... soz Frank!

Posted - 05/04/2007 : 07:14:40 Yup - thanks for the visual on the tabs Jordy... great performance.
I always use the opening to Pong after tuning. Jumpin' Beans is less useful for that purpose but waaaay too much fun to play.

No thank you. Actually nobody has ever said that...I don't think I do. It may be the grainy youtube quality. I get "young george harrison" the most...a thousand people have told me that. There are some pics of him that look exactly like me, its nuts.

Posted - 05/03/2007 : 10:35:03 I'm still learning to play guitar. The first thing I learned to play that resembled music was that little part at the beginning of "Here Comes Your Man."
This week I've also learned to play part of "The Marsist."

Posted - 04/28/2007 : 15:50:20 Some of the Bluefinger songs are pretty addictive. TBR and Threshold are deceptive, neat little time tricks in the former, and a killer progression from the G to the D and down to the F# in Threshold; absolutely killer song. |

Posted - 04/28/2007 : 11:33:29 Los Angeles, but everybody wants to play it with a kinda-slide movement with the left hand, and that's not the way frank plays it. He just changes the chord from the thiner strings to the lower. |

Posted - 04/28/2007 : 09:20:17 I just got my first guitar last thursday, it's an ash Tele and i'm having an absolute blast learning to play. I have played bass for around 12 years (and i make & repair basses for a living) and have noodled around on other peoples guitars in the past, but now that i have my own it's really nice. So far i have only worked out a few songs, first one i worked out was Captain Pasty but i'm having a hrad time singing the chorus and playing at the same time. Also i've learnt Massif Central which is a song i absolutely love, i am not sure i've got it 100% correct yet though. My real favourite is Dead Mans Curve, i must have played it like 5 times last night and a few times agian this morning. It feels so good to play and sing along to that.
Unfortunately i have never learnt any kind of music theory at all, which to be honest has not really hampered me on the bass, but i think i am going to have to learn at least the chord names on guitar so i can learn some more songs without having to figure them all out by ear. Can anyone suggest a good reference book of 'rock' type chords that would be useful for a beginner?
One thing that has surprised me so far is that some of Franks songs are actually pretty simple to play, i kind of assumed in my mind that they would be difficult for some reason. Can't wait to learn some more now. |

Posted - 04/27/2007 : 22:20:52 Haha, any playing around is just me not playing guitar well and either skipping or simplifying the intro...
I played King and Queen of Siam at a show once, and just skipped that whole long instrumental intro. It was also an impossibly hard song to sing...go ahead, try it!!

Posted - 04/27/2007 : 21:55:23 I find Frank songs very hard to play, but I like playing Pray A Little Faster and Coastline. I also learned how to play Ed Is Dead from the Christmass dvd! I also like the opening to Caribou a lot, and I try to practice barre chords with Monkey Gone To Heaven.

Haha. Ya I just learned to play Ole Mulholland the other day. I had been meaning to learn it for ages because it's often the first song I listen to when I start drinking too early 'HEY SLEEPY MONSTER IN THE SAND, TIME TO GET UP AND HAVE A DRINK'. Excitement and adventure and really wild things. |

yeah that intro riff to San Anton is pretty easy, super neat sounding, and heaps fun. Hands down my favourite song of Devil's Workshop (Whiskey in your shoes being a close second). I wrote a song that needed a Texan feel guitar-riff and did something in similar vain to that riff from San Antonio |

Posted - 04/21/2007 : 07:12:10 The intro to Modern Age is a great little riff and is a great way to jump into a tune. I like playing that one for people into classic rock and others who have no frame of reference. Because I've noticed that most of the time when you play it they'll sort of giggle or laugh when they hear that intro.
It's not a laugh that says "that sucks" - they laugh because it's fun - and they're immediately intrigued because it comes from so far out of left field. It's quite clear that this is not the opening notes to any Eagles song. You're sort of setting a tone right at the outset that says "Don't ask me if I know any 'Garth Brooks'" |

Or the classic Freedom Rock "break down to monolithic but simple guitar riff after the intro" breakdown riff.

plus how fun is it mimicking franks vocals??.
my fav frank song to play is places named after numbers but the one i play the most is old black dawning, such a fun riff
with the pixies my fav to play is blown away

Posted - 04/18/2007 : 16:19:09 I play Llano Del Rio over and over for 45 minutes, making up my own lyrics because I can't remember the real ones.
For some reason I've never bothered learning much FB solo stuff, I just listen to it. My old band did Headache, Abstract Plain, and Hey. I can play about half of Pixies songs, but I never feel much urge to play FB songs. Weird.
Yeah, of course Caribou intro to check your tuning. But the original poster said FB songs, not Pixies.

Posted - 04/18/2007 : 15:30:20 Hey HeroJuan, I can't play 2 hrs of FB/ Pixies material..mmmh...perhaps 45 min. I would like to hear you play after the bottle of whiskey's empty ;-). Have a good night and cheers..
Now I'm mostly playing Sylkie Bride. Even if I would like to have someone playing the piano.

Posted - 04/18/2007 : 14:39:21 I can probably play at least 2 hrs of FB/Pixies material. Once or more a week I get a bottle of whiskey and play/sing FB, gradually getting louder and more drunk as the set progresses, much to the chagrin of the chick who lives in the apartment across from mine, but I don't stop until the bottle is empty or I pass out. I've had a pretty shit day today so tonight may be one of those nights. |
