can anyone else hear this similarity in the melody of frank's voice and the first 3 chords with this part of "the happening" where he sings I WAS DRIVIN DOIN NOTHING ON THE SHORES OF GREAT SALT LAKE. you can sing that over the begining of fort wayne. it's neat.

It sounds like it could possibly be someone saying Wayne with a French accent, like this?

dans la ville de ne Wayne

I dunno

Good one, kfs. I bet you're right about that. And what about "doom-sayin'"? What's that about?

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

An amazing song. The antithesis of the songs on Bluefinger. I like bluefinger, but this just makes me shiver- in a good way, that is.

and who starred in the movie fort apache? john WAYNE. a lot easier to rhyme with than apache.

it's sooooooooo about the pixies imo.

it may be a crackpot theory but i really like that idea.

and this song is fantastic. violet's background vocals and french sound very lovely.

I like the reprise of the first verse, after Violet has sung her part.

I'm with fbc on that. "Bluefinger" is a real drug, and I've been addicted to it since my first hit, but when I reach the threshold and can't take any more, I put on "Fort Wayne" and mellow out. To be honest, I like it more than any song on "Bluefinger." And I do wonder about the rest of the album. I worry that it can't possibly live up to this first song.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

while i'm busy overdosing on blauwe vinger this song covers me like a security blanket. i need to hear the album this track comes from.

beautiful stuff. even the dentists drill in the background.

wow, i like it better than any bluefinger track. and i like bluefinger.

I like it, but it just isn't as great as I expected, and if it were on Bluefinger it would be one of the weaker tracks. It is one of the few Frank songs which I think could do with a bit a of Pixies magic.

Still it is a nice song and everything, and I don't want to be too critical of it.

I think that Fort Wayne has just a beautiful melody. I especially love the part when Frank sings really high to double up the verses. Amazing.

Do we know anything else about the Grand Duchy project besides Fort Wayne? Is it going to be a full album worth of material?

If David Fricke wrote the following, it would get some attention 'eh??: Brian Wilson + Stereolab + Frank Black = Grand Duchy.

I guess I'm a little late to the party but this song is so damn excellent, it makes me cry. I have been listening to it almost non-stop on repeat over and over again. Great pretty melody, bells, female vocals, and excellently placed LOUD DISTORTED GUITAR! If this was a song written for a possible Pixies album then Kim Deal is a dummy! (if indeed she's the one who was worried about tarnishing their legacy). Obviously this man can still write in this idiom if he so chooses. BEAUTIFUL and I WANT MORE!!

I think I read on the wiki that wheat is Indiana's No. 3 crop. But you're right that I'm right about the lyric.

Ok, so here's where we're at on the lyrics, since we're finally talking about this great song again. Again, thanks to Denis for the French bits.

Once I was playin’
Down in Fort Wayne
Lost in the grain
You know what I’m sayin’?
But like I was sayin’
The kids were swayin’
To a rock and roll beat
Confused in the wheat
From all the doom-sayin’
And all the egg-layin’

La la la la
La la la la
La la la la
La la la la
La la la la
La la la la
La la la la
La la la la
La la la la
La la la la
La la la la

Once we were kissin’
And in the crowd
They cheered so loud
They’d come to listen
They thought we’d gone missin’

I can’t decide
Do I confide
These things
In my heart, in my heart, in my heart

Vous vous rappelez
Dans la vie de ???
Que nous avons
Embrasse tout la nuit
Il etait si grand
Extasy pure
Je ne l'oublierai
Un moment si parfait
Vous etes celui
Le seul pour moi *

Once I was playin’
Down in Fort Wayne
Lost in the grain
You know what I’m sayin’?
But like I was sayin’
The kids were swayin’
To a rock and roll beat
Confused in the wheat
From all the doom-sayin’
And all the egg-layin’

My hands are tied
I must confide
These things
In my heart, in my heart, in my heart

* Translation of the French part:
Do you remember
In ???
That we kissed all night long
It was so big
Pure extasy
I'll never forget
Such a perfect moment
You're that one
The only one for me

Yeah, and also I found a little something of "Out Of State" in the rythm of the lyrics and the melodies.
