Did anybody ever call him Black Francis anyway?
In the old days I remember people saying "the pixies singer".
That's the good thing of "Black Francis": as it is impossible to actually call somebody that way, EVERYBODY will be aware that Bluefing is the new album from "the pixies singer".
Gosh... that's a chess move !

I think I, for one, will always call him Frank Black.

...And each song would have a traduction in french like Mike Watt's "Tales from minuteman".
That makes 1200 pages !

A 600 pages book with all his songs written should signed Charles Tompson.
Hey why didnt they already made it ?

I think it'd be cool if he released an album as Charles Thompson.

Really, is he the OTHER Francis Bacon ? I mean, a lot of people say he's the most important painter of the 20th century! But perhaps every english speacking kid study that philosopher guy at school ?

No, that's Kevin Bacon, not the actor but the guy that owns the delicatessen on thirty-fifth, Scott Bayo's nephew and Francis Scott Key's former love slave. I think he's got a burned copy of Bosanova, though.

And you got to write dialogues for Kevin Smith.

Mmm... In French at least it sounds REALLY uncool. Because it's also a French name with the same spelling but a different prononciation ("sharlu", it's very french sounding). And the one who would prononce it with american or english accent would sound very very presomptuous.
By the way, an amusing anecdote: I was in a radio studio for a Frank Black show, and he noticed they had spelled his name "Franck" like in french. He said he was going to change it on the records, "Franck with a C", and everybody went into a big "NOOOOOO". "Aw... allright, allright. I keep Frank without a c"
trobrianders Posted - 03/14/2007 : 05:29:12
I always thought of him as Charles. So all this is academic for me. It's befitting his music to think of him as just Charles I think. Black Francis, Frank Black or even Chuck T don't sound cooler than plain old Charles.

Ahhh, there's two. Thanks for telling me.

wikipedia says he was a descendant of a brother or sister of the original Francis Bacon.

I heard that Black Francis was for the dark Francis Bacon, whos paintings could have easily illustrated the first pixies albums.

Paintings by Francis Bacon? You sure about that one. He was an English philosopher.

Right, as in the president has lifetime franking privileges and therefore doesn't have to pay postage ever again.

Or, as in Violet has Franking priveleges, which is why they've had two babies in the last several years.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

Seems like I remember something about Bowie calling him Fraancis
billy shabore Posted - 03/13/2007 : 07:10:33
I remember that Dennis Miller called him "Black."

Ha...then referred to himself as "embarrassingly white Dennis"

Yeah, as in go frank yourself.

Come to think of it, "frank" is an adjective, too. And sort of appropriate, I guess.

Yes, Black was considered this first name. I called him Black Francis until he went solo and I remember it taking a little bit of practice to call him Frank Black.
PixieSteve Posted - 03/12/2007 : 17:08:47
was the black in black francis considered a first name? or was it more like an adjective to describe his persona?

I definately prefer Frank Black over Black Francis. But that's because I'm "late". If "Black Francis" is what it takes for the rest of the pixies to feel that a new album would be disconnected from his (marvelous) solo works, well, then that's a small price to pay

well hello kfs! have a good day? sending you an email.

Attends une minute... il etait Black Francis sur FMRM ?

Oh man, I was mistaken. Bad sintax
Again, I was thinking that with the name Black Francis he can include his new work with the Pixies. But for me "Frank Black Francis" sounds kind of cool..

Et dire que j'allais vérifier sur le CD de FMRM!!!
Merci Grotesque pour me l'avoir fait remarquer...

I'd be willing to bet 10 cents that any contracts are signed "Charles Thompson."

I wonder if BF is under the same label's contract as FB is? Can you simply change names and be independant of your other persona's contract?

Assassins ? Even better. I was just watching for the first time the pixies sell out reunion dvd and thinking he's kinda frightening on stage, especially in the Nimrod's Son sinister laught.

(come on others, everybody can get this)
Jefrey Posted - 03/11/2007 : 23:07:17
I just wonder if this Black Francis move, and the songs that he's been releasing lately are kind of "negotiating tactics" for trying to get the rest of the Pixies on board with doing a new album. It'd kind of like, "see - I can still do stuff other then the alt-country direction I was in for a while".

It's like doing demos that the band is unwilling to do.

Interesting that there isn't a more fleshed-out version of "Dead Man's Curve" or that ChristMASS didn't have any of the full band performances of that song. It's almost like he's saving it for the Pixies. It's certainly the most Pixie-ish of the new stuff, IMO.

But if the rest of the Grand Duchy stuff is as good as Fort Wayne, I'm not sure we'll care if we hear another Pixies album!
