I've always liked "Los Angeles," but it's so different from everything else the man has ever done that I almost feel like it doesn't belong in the catalog. I often feel that way about my favorite artists' "signature" songs, the ones that non-fans know and like but that just aren't characteristic of an artist's body of work. (Another song like that is "Laid" by James.) Does anything else in FB's catalog stick out like a sore thumb to anyone?

I would say Southbound Bevy is the most un-Frank Black Frank Black song. Good question coastline. |

Musically it's really similar to Can I Get A Witness, which I much prefer. That one's even more unFrankish. But sounds very frank. |

If they absolutely want it, they could put an alternate version or a remix without that FM guitar effect (no, FM is not for "Fast Man" here...).
The raw one from the valentine's podcast was a very decent song. |

For me, at the time(ish), it was Shazeb Andleeb.
I'm not too sure about the lack of chorus thing since there's quite a few FB songs with no chorus whatsoever (particularly in the last five or six years), as well as songs with multiple choruses. I always thought LA fit in pretty well. Now, I Don't Want To Hurt You (Every Single Time) -- not only does that one not fit in to me, that's got to be some kind of low point IMHO. Totally cookie cutter and vanilla and hence, very un-Frank.
When I first heard it, My Favorite Kiss was a total shock, sounded nothing like anything he'd done prior. Now after honeycomb and Raiderman, it fits in great. I always did like it. The production on it is so different from the others on the album... For some reason it always reminded me of a TV commercial song or a theme song for a TV show. Great song though. |

If I remember correct , someone asked Frank in an interview
what a " frankblack\charlesthompson\pixies " song should sound like
and his answer was " It just has to sound cool"
So , in my mind , all borders and boundry were eliminated in that one
statement !

It would be interesting to know if FB did Sad Old World and The Real El Rey just after learning Dark End Of The Street. Cos these two songs sound like a "Blackisation" of Dark end.

The Farewell Bend surprised me in a good way. Melodically that kind of elated blues was more of a departure than something like Radio Lizards I thought. Lyrics notwithstanding, Dark End Of The Street isn't a million miles away from Stupid Me, is it? |

Fiddle Riddle makes me think to "The navaro knows". That would have been a good turn for the pixies to go "strange reggae pop" instead of staying guitar oriented, if they hadnt broke up. In facts, I've read an interview of Gil Norton at that time that said the next album was going to be much more like The Navaro Knows, and I thought "great, cos anyway they couldnt make better punk songs than on Trompe le Monde") |

Los Angeles - greatest riff ever. Full of swerve and tension, even played acoustically like from the Sacremento gig off the Christmass DVD - God I wish he hadn't fouled up the ending.
Sure it sounds like him. It's him and it sounds like him. When it's not him that's when he's, very deliberately, adopting another's vocal style, like Neil Young on So. Bay or Chris Rea on Calistan. But it's always him. Mind you Radio Lizards...and Don't Get Me Wrong could be anybody.
