85 weeks. I decided I didn't like that song and then, one amazing Catholic night, I realized I was a moron, the song rocks. Anybody else have a similar story of "getting" a song only after seeing it performed live?

yeah, just another cheap attempt to create another pro-Catholics thread

"Wave of Mutilation", never one of my favorite Pixies songs, but live at my first FB and the Catholics show is was amazing. Also, like many I see, "I Want Rock N' Roll". And, though I liked it upon first hearing it, Rich's guitar on "Los Angeles" live is insane. :)

Yep, good selections!
The marsist, Whiskey in your shoes, 666, I want Rock'roll, 85 weeks, The snake, Skeleton Man, I'm not dead, Dance War, My terrible ways, Steak'n'Saber, Storage, The Jacques Tati, I'll be blue, Living on Soul,
and I would add "Jesus was Right" that i REALLY DIDNT LIKE AT ALL until seeing it live and really getting it totally.
I say those song should be re-recorded to make them sound as great as they really are!
For "terrible ways", it's not that it's poorly recorded at all, but it's such a luxurious recording... a dry one like the live at cafe du nord would be interesting.

There was something really cool about being in a room full of people singing along with solo Frank to all these songs I knew and loved.
That's almost exactly how I got hooked on this song -- hearing an audience sing along with the ohohohs -- though it was on a bootleg. I never saw the Catholics in person.

Grand Marnier and a pocketful of speed. We did it all day until we started to bleed.

Now that I think about it... the same kind of sing along thing happened at the Pixies show I went to, just on a much larger scale.

For me, the latest would have to be 666. I never dug the song until I saw him do it live this last tour. He screamed it with such feeling that I've been listening to it quite a lot lately!

Actually Re-Make/Re-model is not an FB tune but a Roxy Music tune.. but yes, I was quite excited when he kicked off his electric set with that last tour.. it was ironic because I had just been discussing roxy music with the girl I went to the concert with and The Man layed into that tune and I jumped for joy! I saw Roxy Music on their final tour Summer 2001 and it was a great show!

i'm not dead, i'm in pittsburgh always seemed kind of stupid to me when listening to it on the album. then i saw reid paley and fb for two shows in a row in nyc and they both played it each night - i saw it live four times in like three or four days.

after that, i couldn't get it out of my head. fortunately, it's an easy song to play and i've been learning to play guitar the last two months or so, so it immediately became one of my practice songs. :)

I've never actually seen FB live but after recently listening to a few different live version of 'The Man Who Was Too Loud' I appreciate the studio version a lot more. As it says in the tabs section, this is 'a masterpiece of a composition'! I don't think I even noticed how complex it was until looking at the chords used.

On this note I'll add The Sad Punk. No interest until I saw them do it live in 92. And like so many on this forum, I was really glad they dusted it off and played it in '05.

I Want Rock n Roll, Skeleton Man, 85 Weeks. Still have a hard time w/ the recorded version of Skeleton Man.

Changing the topic slightly, certain songs only really got me once I'd played them on guitar. 'Fazer Eyes', bafflingly as it seems now, just didn't appeal, until I was fooling around with the intro riff. It all came together.

I wonder if people that don't like COR never saw those songs live. All that stuff was better when you saw Lyle Workman wailing. I didn't like most of that album till I saw it live, now that I think about it. The Adventure and the Resolution kicks especial ass when you realize there was no studio tricks, and Lyle can actually play all that right in front of you.

Marsist acoustic was definitely a fun treat. Who saw that coming?

Sing for Joy. It creeped me out in October whilst left me cold on CD. 666 rocked so much, I really do listen to it differently now. I Burn Today.

I am tempted to add Dead Man's Curve but that would be silly in the context of this topic. ;-)

Nadine is one hell of a song, live or not. The tension he shares with us (with me, anyway) is incredible. The "We'll park - I'll drive" is so clever.
Ziggy Posted - 01/06/2007 : 15:58:58
Yeah, 'Atom in My Heart' got played an awful lot in solo shows before its release, but strangely, not since!
Useyourname Posted - 01/06/2007 : 13:17:44
My Terrible Ways and Nadine. Actually, I liked Nadine live but it was a lot happier. Like a song about girl he has a crush on. The recorded version is so much darker. I enjoy that deep pining for a girl you're unsure you can get.

10%'r always annoyed me on the otherwise awesome Orange/Yellow album. I said it in my review of the show but I'll say it again. Live it was pretty kick ass.

Broken Face, you said it. I didnt like living on sould or remake/remodel at all until this last tour. But he blew the roof off with those songs. I wish i had those recordings because the studio remake/remodel isn't as rocking.

Good topic by the way.

Steak and Sabre and I'm Not Dead I'm in Pittsburgh
houstonguthrie Posted - 01/05/2007 : 16:56:57
all of the Honeycomb and Fastman/Raiderman tunes have hit me this way

many of them I liked allready - but loved after I heard them live. Others I didn't care for at first, but grew to appreciate after seeing them live

"Pittsburgh" especially - but also "My Life is In Storage"

- and "Sing For Joy" is another biggy in that vain. There's something about when he plays it live - that you can just feel that He likes it so much. You know he closed out most of his shows on this last tour with this one and called it "his big Opus" (or something like that) in an interview. Just knowing that he thought so highly of it made me give it a closer listen - and the live versions make me feel more of what he sees in it

one tune I love on Honeycomb that I've yet to hear of him playing live is "Atom In My Heart"
Jefrey Posted - 01/05/2007 : 00:12:32
-I'll Be Blue (the "Like Jesus Christ on the hill" line didn't really hit me as one of his best lines ever until I saw it live. Being crucified being described as being "blue"? Biggest ironic understatement of all time?)
-Czar (don't know why, but it was my least fave song on the album till I saw it live and he explained it was about John Denver)
-I Need Peace (which I like before, but when he sang it with John Doe, it was the best)
-The Jaques Tati (heard it live first, but never would have liked it if I hadn't seen it live)

Bonus Cut: The Man Who Was Too Loud - version with Teenage Fanclub rocks the most. I dind't care for the song at all till I heard that version. And The Jaques Tati. And Sister Isabel. Hell, they should start a super-group. and with John Doe!

"I Bleed" completely took me by surprise on the reunion-show 2004, "Adda Lee" hit me in the street while listening to the "Black Is Beautiful" version. I never saw these two coming...

And "Two Reelers". It didn't do zip fo me before, but it never really caught my attention either. On one of the podcasts was this wonderfull live version that completely changed my appreciation of this song.

sing for joy. they closed with it in november at the metro in chicago. it was great.

Can't think of many that bloomed for me live. Maybe "Two Reelers." Watching him play the guitar really helps.

On a related note: Many of the songs that Brian and Dean have broken down on their podcasts have grown new legs for me. Examples: "85 Weeks," "Ana," "Nadine."

Is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?
