I'm doing a little research into Frank's religious lyrics. I'm trying to compile a list of songs he's done with a religious theme and explore what those are talking about. For instance, Gouge Away is about Sampson, but is that all? What is the 'twist'? Any help provided would be much appreciated.
Here is the list so far:
I've Been Tired - Song of Solomon
Nimrod's Son - Nimrod (biblical King)?
Dead - David and Bathesheba
Gouge Away - Sampson and Delilah
Jaina Blues - Jainaism
maybe I'll kick it

"[21 Reasons] is about the conquest of California and the natives who lived there by the Spanish back in the 16-1700's. The march north from Baja up north, to just north of San Francisco. The whole mission system. In modern day California there are 21 of these missions. It's the foundation of modern day California. It has quite a checkered history. You start talking about religion and conversion and money and priests and soldiers you know somebody's going to get screwed. It's about all that."

Now THAT is an amazing thread. Kudos to fumanbru for his commentary. All that's missing from this great analysis is frnck blck stopping by and clearing things up a little. I know he'll never do that, but if he did, I'd wish him to do it on this one. Seems to me, when somebody asks for an explanation of a song, he says something like "It's in the lyrics."

on another website it said "...These are the angels who mated with humans, producing 'god kings' (ie. hank the eighth) who wrought havoc upon the earth with their misuse of advanced science.."

I never saw "Jeus was Right" as being a religious song.... If anything I think the reference to Jesus can almost be described as "whimsical." |

Heloise may not be biblical but it defiantly shows some religious views (regarding the church)....I have no evidence to base this on but my knowledge of Frank and his complexity of writing I don't think "Jesus is Right" religious. He may have been using it as metaphor for nonviolence but I don't think there is much else to it than that. I mean read the lyrics and its clear. |

I'm doing a couple of FB related things for university, and my prof is doing something as well. I'm not sure how much information I can give out about what she's doing though, sorry.
I'm doing a paper on religious theme's in Frank's music as well as a little thing on FB and Larry Norman.

Have you read Ben Sisario's book on Doolittle? Some interesting insights in there I'd recommend picking up for your work.

Jesus Was Right is about a somewhat religious old dude (2,000 years old, that is). All My Ghosts -- I'm still trying to figure out that one, but I think it's worth looking into. Go Find Your Saint -- loose connection. I'm sure there are more, but those ones jumped out at me. The frankblack.net Discopedia is surely a great resource, though, for this sort of thing. I browse and search that thing all the time.
