There's a record store near where I live and they were selling a few cheap FB cd's. They had a promotional copy of FMRM and it was only 10 dollars so I bought it. It's sweet! Kind of sounds like Honeycomb, but more rock and less acoustic guitars and stuff. A few songs sound country, especially Dirty Old Town. I'm pretty sure it's illegal to buy a promotional copy, though. Whatever.

Not a cabalist of Frank Black's work -- which is intimidating writing on a forum with so many learned members -- but this album is, at least to me, his most mature and comprehensive.

I don't know how to describe it without mentioninng my worthless tastes or musical preferences. This kind of album makes me embarrassed to listen to the majority of music on the radio.

Well I was a _big_ Pixies fan, paid over the odds on eBay for tickets to see them on the reunion tour and all, but I don't find myself listening to the actual records much these days. Frank Black's solo stuff, by contrast, I listen to all the time.

FMRM is a slow burn, I didn't find it as instantly brilliant as "Dog In The Sand", "Devils Workshop", "Black Letter Days" or the wonderful "Show Me Your Tears" but it keeps tugging me back in.

I think he's like Dylan, he changes and develops and also like Dylan he never stops putting records out. He is up there with the greats.

I am a big fan of FB. Practically all his records are timeless classics to me - but honeycomb (except lone child and honeycomb) and FMRM are probably not going to have the same status for me. There are some good songs on there but it just does not capture me. I am hoping that Frank is going to explore his own totally unique style (perry the wind ...)on later albums.
Cult_Of_Frank Posted - 07/18/2006 : 13:24:27
I believe not. If there were enough sales, it might find its way there, but at this point I don't think that's the case. Same deal with Honeycomb.

Bought it from itunes last week. Its interesting and definitely has its moments. I respect FB for holding true to his musical vision as he follows his bliss from "punk" to "van-morrison/leonard cohen-y nashville" whatver you want to call it. :)

...however,
those influences are not really my cup of tea unfortunately. I am enjoying the album, but I really miss the mystery, beauty and energy of say, Dog in the Sand. I wasnt too crazy about SMYT as a complete album either--which I suppose was the first clear step into the nashville/americana foray---though I do love Massif Centrale and like the Roxy Music influenced The Snake as well.

Johnny Barleycorn feels like a direct descendant of the earlier incarnations of FB--though still greatly removed from the Caholics and pre Catholics period--great melody and energy--and lyrics that are mysterious and mundane.
In the time of my ruin" is a nice one too but the lead out is fantastic--great melodic dramatic chord changes and nice whirling steel guitar (ala calistan) --and for some reason reminds me teeny a bit of "Hey Joe" by Hendrix.

Theres quite a few catchy riffs that have been playing repeatedly in my head--so perhaps I still need to process this album a bit longer before making a final verdict. Its always good to have a new FB album to listen too--thats for sure. Now--wheres my Orange Album.... :)

These last days I travelled through Poland. In the train from Warsaw to Krakow I have really listenned to Fast Man Raider Man for the first time and really went into the lyrics and arrangements. How pleasant that was! Songs that did not catch my attention the fisrt time i heard them on my stereo revealed their strong musical potencial. Panoramic is very important in this album and you can notice it and apprecialte it at best with headphones only (in my opinion). What a change in ten years I though. What a mature album. along with Teenager of the tears and Black letter days this one is a huge trip. Disc one is indoubtedly more catchy especially thanks to Johnny Barleycorn, Fast man and the nice suite: seven Day, Raider Man and the impressing End of the summer,THE song to expect. Disc two reveals the good potential of the Honeycomb sessions songs that did not really suit the Honeycomb feeling and opens with this pure Black masterpiece, in the time of my ruin.

So that album made my days during my trip in the beautiful and wild Poland.

While teenager of the year was that kind of albums that takes you away, Fast Man... is definitely an album to take away for a voyage.

Special mention to Sad old World...

Goodbye!

Perhaps no coincidence that I fell asleep midway thru Dog Sleep the first three times I tried to play CD1. In anticipation of the last 3 tunes maybe.

...Listened to it today. Some really good songs-especially the first few, and In my Time Of Ruin is a bit of a lively surprize after things drag a bit towards the end of CD1. I love the way Elijah references (musically) Wave Of Mutilation-actually thought he mentioned Kim, but checking the song database (great to have the lyrics, BTW!) it's 'kin'!

Overall impression: Some very impressive songs, and I know I'll be rewarded with further listenings, although things to get a bit bogged down now and again!

I find it even drabber than Honeycomb. Ho hum, at least none of the tracks are as terrible as 'Violet'. Time to ditch the old musos Chuck. It was a nice idea, the Nashville thing, but it hasn't quite worked for me I'm afraid.

How about those horns in "Sad Old World". They make me sad. The ones in the verses on the A Chords.

I think it's great, although I liked Honeycomb better.

Favorite songs:

Raider Man
I'm Not Dead
In the Time of My Ruin
Fitzgerald
Elijah
Fare Thee Well

This is one bad ass album. I received mine the Friday after the release date. Disc one is full of great numbers, Fast Man, Raider Man, Dog Sleep and that countried out version of Dirty Old Town. Disc Two, well it contains Highway. I've loved that song ever since it was leaked on the HC early version. Way to go Frank, hope to see you in Lancaster, PA.

You guys are crazy. When The Paint is awesome. Where The Wind might be my favorite on either CD right now, but the second half of Ruin is soooo good.

In fact, you can do this yourself. A lot of people have expressed the opinion that some of the songs were throwaways, but as is the case on every Frank record, nobody likes the same songs. See the "Survivor" threads where Dirty Old Town is about to get voted off although it's one of my fave tracks. I did my own selection, removing 8 songs that I found subpar, and the remaining 19-tracks record is very good. FYI, I removed Fast Man, Crucify, 7 Days, End of Summer, When the Paint, Terrible Ways, Where The Wind & Holland Town.

For my driving around, one disc version I omitted When the Paint, Golden Shore, Down to You, My Terrible Ways, & Sad Old World.

maybe it's time for Frank to get all David Byrne on us and do a whole tropicalia cd, with lots of bongo drums and shit.

kind of like where Whispering Weeds is almost headed.

I got it today. Finally.

Serves me right to trust my next door indie record store... They didn't manage to get me FM/RM in two weeeks. So today I lost my nerve and my will to support the feelgood, small business in the neighborhood and went to one of the big chains. And got it immediately. Should have ordered it from Amazon in the first place...

I haven't listened to it in in it's entirety yet.

I consider myself a diehard FB fan, grew to like his solo stuff more than the Pixies stuff, but I must admit he's losing me with FMRM. "Okay" is the best qualifier I can come up with. I am much disappointed.

I read somewhere that he'll start working with Eric Drew Feldman, is this confirmed? That would be a great news.

It's hard not to agree, but the Man's still happy cranking out the Pixie scream. All mature and grown up on an fB record, all alternative and noise on a Pixies tour. Today I listened to the calm 'All Around The World' and a raw live version of 'Something Against You'. Both recorded in the same year.

But at the end of the day, I'd pay to see both sides of Frank.

Got my copy of FMRM last week. I really liked it upon first listen, yes it is Honeycomb-ish, but that's not bad. Frank is still penning finely crafted tunes, and I like his use of varied instruments. Very bummed he did not include lyrics. My one disappointment was this release did not have one "cringe inducing "musical moment. (I'm sure veteran FB fans know what I'm talking about.) Mellow FB is where he's at now. Great job by all contributors.

I got the album on the day it came out, but I've been so busy since then that I haven't been able to post to the forum about it until now. I did, however, write a journal entry about it, if anyone is interested.
