There's a record store near where I live and they were selling a few cheap FB cd's. They had a promotional copy of FMRM and it was only 10 dollars so I bought it. It's sweet! Kind of sounds like Honeycomb, but more rock and less acoustic guitars and stuff. A few songs sound country, especially Dirty Old Town. I'm pretty sure it's illegal to buy a promotional copy, though. Whatever.

Illegal to sell not buy. You're $10 went to that store not Charles. How is he gonna feed his wife and kids now?

I'll just buy an overpriced Show Me Your Tears at Borders. That should cover it.

I just bought a legitimate copy at Tower! I am a little disappointed that the lyrics aren't published in the package. Sometimes I wish Frank had a little more commercial success so that we would get slicker releases and some airplay.
The album is great. I actually downloaded it (illegal, whatever) a few days ago and had the weekend to fall in love with the album. In my opinion this is another album that will take about three listens before you "get it". Right now I think the standout song is track 14, "In the time of my ruin". Amazing! The lyrics...wow! "Fast Man" is also a great track.
p.s. Don't bash me for downloading Frank's music. I ALWAYS buy his stuff and when I give a cd away to a friend, I buy another one.

Sorry, but if he keeps putting out FM/RM type albums, not even the Pixies legacy will save him from the discount bin of life.

I've only heard about 5 songs so far but I have to agree with you. Frank's done the Nashville thing now. It's time for a new "era." |

I do agree that this album is VERY downtempo. I like to see my favorite artists grow and evolve but I know that a lot of us fell in love with this music when he was making albums like TOTY and this is a huge change. I thought (at the time) that the Catholics was a major departure and sounded too country but I grew to really like those albums, especially the first Catholics album. I'm looking forward to Frank rocking again! |

A few slow songs like that are good when the rest is rock(TOTY and Sir Rockaby) but it gets kind of annoying when that's the whole album.

It makes me laugh when I think back to DITS and DW and BLD, and everyone moaned at the time how down tempo they were. HONEYCOMB and FMRM make those albums sound like punk rock. But I have been enjoying the FMRM sound now for months...doesn't bug me. I like it better than HONEYCOMB...but I liked HC as well. I officially bought it today on my lunchbreak. I'll probably never listen to it as I have old burned copies. The digipakaging is pretty cool. Reminds me of a bad Pearl Jam digipak. Mine came with a cool fold-out poster of Frank climbing thru a construction site and a 60 minute interview disc (!!!)...that alone was worth the price!

I overall didn't like HC, but there were a few good songs. Selkie Bride, I Burn Today, and Song Of The Shrimp are pretty much the only reason I listen to it.

I bought the album today. $16. Not bad for a 2CD FB album.
You definetely have to listen to this album a number of times before deciding whether you like it or not. It's just one of those albums. Trust the man. He's put out some good stuff again. I find that this album especially benefits from having been listened to a number of times over a long period of time. (I've had it for about two months) The rewards are worth the effort :)

I wonder how I can find a copy that has the poster and the 60 minute interview disc. I'll buy another one. Frank can have some more of my money. |

Yeah, I'm sure that ten dollars is going to make a huge difference. I'm sure now he'll have to sell his house and sell his two kids into slavery.

whooo whoo i am now one of the enlightened. fastman/raiderman rocks!!!!! two cds packed with yummy tunes. the first place i tried to buy it on my lunch break was going out of biz. the second place (large commerical bookstore #1) was sold out :(. i was starting to feel like little red riding hood.
then commercial bookstore #2 had a copy. I called in and had it reserved. after work i went to cool local indie record store and bought a copy for a friend. it was $6 cheaper than large chain.
Well, I have to say I am glad I waited until this offical release. It was definately worth waiting for and really love the music. I wasn't expecting the sax but it super cool. It keeps you on your toes as it sounds different that previous stuff. It also seems to mix it up from a rock n roll, to country to bluesy sound. Anyway, for some reason what ever I write doesn't really seem to capture it completely. It's just a new cool level onto the already cool FB sound. It's the type of album you like right away but you want to spend a lot more time listening to it and getting to know every inch of it.
i am proud to be a card carrying member of the fmrm club. |

I'm still waiting for mine to be delivered from Amazon.co.uk. But could someone here confirm or deny that the CD has DRM (Digital Rights Mauling) on it? I heard mention on another forum that Back Porch are affiliated with the RIAA and now I'm worried that I might have to send it back :(

Don't know about DRM but Back Porch sure do put a lot of anti-piracy crap on their packaging... I'm sure those FBI logo's are more of a challenge than a real deterrant! Cooking Vinyl's version doesn't have all that stuff on it.

Maybe I'll buy mine through CV then. I really HATE when you buy a bloody disc and are treated like a criminal. Hey. Guys. I BOUGHT the disc. Don't penalize me for it. If I downloaded, I could do whatever I wanted with the MP3s. The same should be true here.

Agreed Dean. I really dislike how a lot of newer albums like the new Sonic Youth and the latest Bad Plus have such glaring FBI logos. The FMRM one isn't as bad as some, but still annoying.

FMRM is AMAZING!!!!! I highly recommend smoking a couple bowls, turning out the lights and just laying down to listen.

yeah, that FBI stuff sucks. it's just not appealing at all. kinda reminds you of those stupid parental advisiory labels
he's a question for you guys, the track listings on the disc labeled the same on the second one. the songs on the second disc play what they should, but when you look at the media player it has the exact same songs listed. except fare the well is labeled track 14. the even funnier thing is that the first disc labels all the tracks as uk versions (I live and bought the cd in the US). weird huh? not a big deal, but kinda strange. do you guys have the same thing? |

I've listened to the record twice. I think I read I have to listen 3 times before I can judge. I feel like floop feels. I'm waiting for Denis to reply so that I can know if the record is good or not.
I miss loud, distorted guitars, fast drums, and screaming. It's close though. I can feel it. Right around the Deadman's Curve.

I agree. And a lot of others have said that Frank’s music is delayed gratification. That’s the beauty of it. One of life’s sweet mysteries. In the past I may have got frustrated when I got a new Frank album and it didn’t give me that instantaneous satisfaction! But now I accept the fact that it may be a year or so before I truly enjoy and appreciate the music.
I listened to Black Letter Days a couple times today and went- “This is fu**king awesome.!” Jet Black River, Whispering Weeds, Southbound Bevy….” But when it first came out I was disappointed. Maybe cause I felt it had a much different feel from the previous Dog in the Sand. Plus all the songs (and Devil’s Workshop) make it more of an effort to absorb. Now 4 years later i'm loving it!
There’s about 5 songs on FMRM that I really like. The others need some more time and space. To the excellent joy of the Frank!

Talking of delayed gratification, I'm getting FM/RM today. Been waiting on a delivery, but can no longer hold out. In 5 minutes time, I'm putting on me shoes, zipping up my coat, quick scratch of the head, light the fag, then off for a stroll into town. |
