Have you heard a Live version of a FB song that has made you like an FB song that you didn't like so much before? Or maybe it made you really like an FB song that you thought was just okay before?
1. Los Angeles - This was actually a grower for me, and it wasn't until I heard the live version on the Nadine EP before I realized how much I like this song. Something about the distortion and the bass in the live version brought it all together for me.
2. Robert Onion - I used to get bored with the layers and layers of layers and layers, but after hearing it at Cafe Du Nord in SF and feeling the layers and layers of energy during layers and layers of layers and layers, it all made sense.
3. Nadine - Something about hearing this on ifc.com with just 2 guitars and without the drums, watching FB's head sway back and forth, I finally got into the rhythm.

That was actually on November 27th, 2002. My first Frank show.

Solid Gold. He opened a show at Avalon in Boston with it. I think it was November 2003. BLD tour. They came out to All the Tired Horses, were kind of playing along with it and then Frank played the opening riff. I remember Dave McC and Dave Philips really rocking out to it. That's when I said "Hey, this is a great song." |

Which means I don't have a single recording of Solid gold performed live.
I can't believe I realised this before, since Solid gold is one of the few songs that make me play air guitar, do silly dances and all these weird things you do when noone is around.
So... if anyone could upload a good live version of this song, or tell me at what shows it was played, I'd be very grateful.

the rocking Black Letter Days, performed on FB&TC last UK tour - I like it on the album, though think the live version is superior.

Actually it is really strange because normally I get into people's songs after I hear them live. But Frank is regularly the exception. I love his songs before I heard them live, and after, equally, despite the great memories. Still:
The Holiday Song: Heard this one back in 1999. I didn't think about that one that much before, but it's a killer.
If It Takes All Night: Simply rocks much, much harder live.
I Need Peace: Killer version in Oxford, England 2003. I'm still not a fan of this song, but that was extraordinary.
Gauge Away: the Live version is so much superior to the Album one.
Wave of Mutilation: UK Surf. 'Nuff said.

That's funny, seeing as though it was played very rarely on the Pistolero tour. It made more frequent appearances in later tours. I wonder why. |

Adda Lee. I never cared much about that song until one day I listened to the Black Is Beautiful bootleg on my way around the town. Franks energetic performance (ok, and the screaming) really hit me. Frank was really into it and I hadn't expected that much energy from that song, I guess. I was standing at a bus station and listened to it over and over again. Now I even like the album version. A lot.
I bleed. Didn't get into that song until jumping and screaming to it on the Berlin gig two years ago. Ahh. That was fun. |

Goodbye Lorraine. Not the best track on SMYT, but I have this video of Frank playing it solo acoustic, and that stripped down version is really cool. Yeah, it's pretty straightforward, but it makes an excellent folk song.

I would second the live version of Brackish Boy. Still don't like it as much on the album, but I used to skip it. :/
I'd also second Whiskey in your Shoes, which I never really disliked, but it never grabbed my attention until I saw it live.
And to add a number to the list, I Want Rock & Roll was always blah to me but good lord does it ever punch you in the face live!!!

There are only 2 Frank Black songs that I have trouble getting into. Jet Black River and Llano Del Rio. Unfortunatly their live counterparts could not change my opinion of these songs. Each of them are just slightly too 'country-ish' for my taste.

There's a nice 4-minute version of "Brackish Boy" on the "Tune In, Turn On" bootleg. But Denis is right (for once!), that song is great, whether live or studio.

But Brackish Boy doesn't really count cause I already loved it on the album. The live version HAS to be on Cult's "best Frank mix ever", I already mentioned it and I expect full support from you guys!

This is quite funny, given that for some reason you only get half of the song on that EP...
Good thread by the way. This has happened to me many times. Agree with Jop re: Bullet, much better live.
The Farewell Bend: as said in the other thread, the live version from 2003 at Slim's is truly mindblowing and opened my ears.
The Last Stand of Shazeb Andleeb: not my fave track from Cult of Ray, but the live on the IDWTHY ep is a killer.
New House of the Pope: hearing it live acoustic before SMYT came out, with Frank's explanation of the song, gave it a whole new meaning.

bullet for me.
the version of dits is good, but not fantastic. whereas when i heard the version on the recording from amsterdam (28-11-2003), i was just blown away. totally new appreciation
and also freedom rock. almost all of the live versions i've heard of this song blow the album version out of the water. loved alot of the versions from the 2003 shows where nhe often opened the gig with it....brilliant. |
