I thought I'd make a separate thread to discuss "the new song", aka Dog Sleep. People who don't like it are allowed to talk , please.

So. I like it. I expect it to grow on me like most Frank songs do, but on a first listen I like it. The beginning is fantastic, the end is awesome (reminds me a lot of My Life Is In Storage), and the middle part is ok. I love the fact that Frank's trademark weird time signatures are back. It's something that lacked in Honeycomb. On the other hand, the things I like less in the songs are:
- the production. Sorry, it's a bit too slick for my taste. Some like that sound, some don't. I don't.
- the lack of guitars. Actually it's not that annoying cause it makes Lyle's end solo even greater, but still. It's Frank Black, come on! I wish there were a guitar part in the song.
That's my 2 cents. Opinion subject to change completely over time.

Denis

I love Guitar Wolf from the Erath!

EDF is a solid bass player as well. I wonder if he came up with the bass lines he played on TOTY? They aren't flashy, but they are perfectly written and excecuted. It is my opinion that EDF is a cool cat.

Oh, cheese. Wonderful cheese. I love you.

If you go back and edit your own post you'll see how it should look.

There. I have fixed my signature. Could not get the cult icon to work, though.

The new song will definitly grow on me. Much of Honeycomb took some time for me to love it as well, but thats only because it is very different from any of his previous work. I'll know that it's a great song when it begins creeping uninvited, yet welcomed into my subconcious mind.

no, I think this upcoming EDFBlack record is going to be great. but first, we get Fastman Raiderman, which is also going to be great.

it seems that this entire record will have a lot of things that confuse our mere mortal brains. jon tiven seems to be a very good producer for frank (after all, he hooked up frank with lyle workman in 93). i wonder if tiven has any plans to produce the upcoming frank/EDF record...

The little pause/weird time signature/mistake that occurs by the time the second chorus of WTWIG kicks in (I think it's the "leaves my simple gaze" part), do you guys think it's on purpose? Very off-throwing(?)...
Grotesque Posted - 03/19/2006 : 06:52:07
Anyone thought of how much the guitar solos on that song are going to disgust the square indie noise fans?
It reminds me of the words of the ironical "Freedom Rock".
VoVat Posted - 03/18/2006 : 10:44:11
"Where The Wind Is Going" is really a pretty catchy song. It doesn't blow me away (no pun intended), but few Frank songs do that right away.

It's strange that in the same time Honeycomb is so coherent and perfect, but actually doesn't have BETTER songs than Show me your tears. I tend to think SMYT got the best tracks, but some songs arrangements lack some relief (The Snake, Jaina Blues...) and slow down the listening of the album. And that counts for all the Catholis albums, even my fav' Black Letter Days.

Okay, I decided to go ahead and listen and, WOW!!!!!!!!! Just when I had rediscovered Honeycomb and thought it was the perfect Frank Black album, I think this one might be even better!

Well sir, the podcast thing is simple. There's a FAQ here:

Or you can download the episodes as MP3s here:

Whoah! I haven't heard the song (won't be listening until the album's release--that and I don't understand the whole "podcast" thing and how that's supposed to work), but I keep on seeing "brass" and "brass-heavy" and "horns" and "trumpets", and I think I must have died and gone to heaven. I LOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEE me some good brass sounds!!!! Actually, I'm getting a little horny just thinking about it...sorry, stupid pun.

"Where The Wind" was from the last day of the HONEYCOMB sessions with Cropper and Reggie Young on guitars, Spooner on keys, David Hood on bass, and I believe Akil Thompson on drums (although my memory does play tricks on me and it could have been his dad Chester).

"Dogsleep" is from the sessions at Jack's a few months later, and it's Levon Helm and Billy Block on drums, Bob Babbitt and Tom Petersson on basses, Ian McLagan on keys, mostly Lyle on guitar but there could be a little Cropper & Duane Jarvis creeping in, Wayne Jackson on trombone, and Frank Black on vocals and a taste of the ukelele.

I hope I'm not forgetting anyone, but I'm doing this from memory so a thousand pardons if I have.

bye,
Jon Tiven

here's my guess for where the wind is going;
frank - guitar, vocals
dave p.- guitar, vocals
EDF - piano, vocals
???

No, I don't agree. I don't get that Catholics vibe. More Randy Newman.
silvereel Posted - 03/16/2006 : 13:14:53
dog sleep is a great song. maybe the best way to listen to it is on sleep deprivation. i don't know, but the "little bird" part of the song, it is one of the most unique compositions i have ever heard. the rhythm is disorienting and does not fit well into any normal conception of music. however, i believe that is what makes frank great; when he challenges conventionality.

where the wind is going is also really growing on me. the keyboard part is light and airy, and the whole song has a kind of "catholics" vibe to it. anyone else agree? anyways it's stuck in my head: "through the barley corn/through the rows of places i was born..."

i'd like to know who did what on each of these tracks. also, what recording method.

cool thanks
Grotesque Posted - 03/07/2006 : 02:51:17
It seems to EXIST on cd.
But how many copies? One hundred?
A record seller told me it was on catalog as a material cd.
The cover is cool, I like to see it myself.

Hey everyone,
quick question, does anyone know if Oddballs was released on cd or just as mp3?
I can't seem to find it anywhere to buy
Grotesque Posted - 02/24/2006 : 03:23:39
Beatles? More Kinks on Muswell Hillbillies.

It's surely the kind of song Frank would call "quirky" that he didn't want to put on Honeycomb.
If the rest of the album is in the same vein, that will be a killer double delivery!
The structure is close to "the sad punk" and other collage songs. Excellent! Frank the weird is back.

The only thing I don't like is the drums, it's played too well with a clean studio sound.
With Tom Waits at the production it would have been diferent!
(-just a joke about an old joke from FB himself)
Zsolt G. Posted - 02/23/2006 : 17:15:06
Hmmm...This is more Beatles "Abbey Road" than anything, especially with the different sections, brass too. Just because it has brass doesn't make it Zydeco music. Sounds better than Honeycomb on first impression.
remig Posted - 02/20/2006 : 06:48:05
Horns would have been cool if used in Rocket From The Crypt way (like the sax on The Snake).
kfs Posted - 02/20/2006 : 06:38:37
I like the horns. I was hoping he might try something like that
someday. I was kind of ambivalent the first time I heard this song but I'm starting to hear it in my head when it isn't playing. I
guess I'm hooked!
remig Posted - 02/20/2006 : 06:34:28
I say "bof".
I want something heavy, with distorded guitars, with drums sounding like dynamite and screams.
Let's play Freedom Rock again.
two reelers Posted - 02/20/2006 : 06:15:32
i hate brass & all kinds of horns. somebody once said to me trumpets and stuff just sounds like letting farts off through pipes. i agree with that. i really hope the other songs are horn-free.

this is my 666th post, btw.
