I thought I'd make a separate thread to discuss "the new song", aka Dog Sleep. People who don't like it are allowed to talk , please.

So. I like it. I expect it to grow on me like most Frank songs do, but on a first listen I like it. The beginning is fantastic, the end is awesome (reminds me a lot of My Life Is In Storage), and the middle part is ok. I love the fact that Frank's trademark weird time signatures are back. It's something that lacked in Honeycomb. On the other hand, the things I like less in the songs are:
- the production. Sorry, it's a bit too slick for my taste. Some like that sound, some don't. I don't.
- the lack of guitars. Actually it's not that annoying cause it makes Lyle's end solo even greater, but still. It's Frank Black, come on! I wish there were a guitar part in the song.
That's my 2 cents. Opinion subject to change completely over time.

Don't worry about guitars in the new album, Denis - just not the emphasis of that particular track. There are a few pretty ripping parts.

On the production, I think it's perfect for that song. But obviously that's a matter of opinion. There are places where I could certainly agree with you on the slickness, though. My only complaint (not for this song but others on the disc) is that the drum sound is fairly lethargic; rock songs with country drums. Of course, I'm straying from discussion here.

Dog Sleep, first of all, I love brass. I do. So I naturally am gonna love this song. Second, I get it in my head all the time. "I'm livin on Daw-awg Sleep <booh-ooh-booh> And I could not eat <piano> <booh-ooh-booh> <piano>" Thirdly, I love the song having parts and not being quite straight-up. And fourthly I like the tone of it, very much the Frank Black I know and love.

And fifthly, I also love the doorsy outro. :P

I love most of this song, but I must admit I had hoped that Frank would have banished his shaky falsetto voice once and for all.

Do you think it's shaky? I thought it had vastly improved and really enjoy it. Interesting...

Trivia: "the new song" sounds much better after one whisky. And this last part makes me shiver. I'll try to get hammered and give it another listen.

'Dog Sleep' is certainly growing on me, and it's been a such a treat to hear it. To comment on the 'shaky falsetto', I'd agree. Pretty weak, if anything.

I need to give it a few more listens, but it's quite a colourful song of contrasting moods!

Good question, Apesy. I was assuming there was some somewhere I'd missed, but I don't hear a falsetto in the song really. There is plenty in others though, and it sounds gooooood.

Well the high voice in the middle I suppose, sorry. Though I must say the song's still amazing.

I love the track and would be pleased if the whole album sounded like it. It sounds simple, catchy. And with Dean saying theres gonna be some good guitar stuff on there too I can't wait to hear the whole album.

I love it !

Jazzy, new orleans, soundtrack, more complex than honeycomb (that i love too).

I think it's logical result of frank black work since his first album : exploration of the american music (punk-rock, rock'n roll, country, soul,...).

Maybe one day he'll be soon Robert Johnson.
Actually he's not so far from Tom Waits. I say not so far!
Maybe some of you could describe it better than me (and my poor english !)

After 2 listienings, to me it does not sound bad but I would prefer letting that kind of song to someone else than Frank Black...sounds ok but to me Frank was synonymous of power, energy, surprise, rythm changes,...and I can almost not feel these components anymore...look forward to hearing the other tracks anyway!

I just heard it once (I'm hoping I'll have forgotten it by June) but it sounded weird. In a good way. I really like the fact that I didn't fully understand what was going on with just one listen, something I'm used to and that I expect from Frank's albums. Something that was somewhat missing from Honeycomb. The New Orleans style brass was as unexpected as it was charming. I also wouldn't mind if the whole album sounded like this.

I don't remember much now, just that it had some weird time signatures and that the second part of the song sounded really mysterious, evil (in a Tom Waits sort of way). Can't wait for the album.

Sorry guys, but by the time the album is out the planet we know as Earth will be obliterated by a gargantuan asteroid.I received this info from a vison.Apparently some alien life form is going to pick up a frequency containing "Dog Sleep". Immediately after hearing it and determining it's source, the aliens will manipulate an asteroid and send it our way. Once, again, sorry to bear this awful news.

First off, thanks for putting Dog Sleep in your Podcast. It is much appreciated. At the moment it is still growing on me. I really love the first 2 parts of the song but I am not a huge fan of the last part. Just my two cents. I wish Frank would start Doubling his vocals again. I really love his voice that way.

A song this brass-heavy is rare for Frank, but I think it's a nice change. It's also cool that it contains a fair number of style changes. I'll probably have to let it sink in before coming up with a truly informed opinion, though.

I've listened to it twice and the horny part kind of reminds me of Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour, remember that place? Anyway, the first time, I'll be honest, I was like,"What?" It sounded better the second time though, I'll give another whirl tomorrow.

After listening to Dog Sleep a few more times the ending is growing on me a bit (what Frank song doesn't). :)

I am really liking how the last part of the song is in a 5/4 time signature. I love when Frank plays in an odd time.

i hate brass & all kinds of horns. somebody once said to me trumpets and stuff just sounds like letting farts off through pipes. i agree with that. i really hope the other songs are horn-free.

I say "bof".
I want something heavy, with distorded guitars, with drums sounding like dynamite and screams.

I like the horns. I was hoping he might try something like that
someday. I was kind of ambivalent the first time I heard this song but I'm starting to hear it in my head when it isn't playing. I
guess I'm hooked!

Horns would have been cool if used in Rocket From The Crypt way (like the sax on The Snake).

Hmmm...This is more Beatles "Abbey Road" than anything, especially with the different sections, brass too. Just because it has brass doesn't make it Zydeco music. Sounds better than Honeycomb on first impression.

Beatles? More Kinks on Muswell Hillbillies.

It's surely the kind of song Frank would call "quirky" that he didn't want to put on Honeycomb.
If the rest of the album is in the same vein, that will be a killer double delivery!
The structure is close to "the sad punk" and other collage songs. Excellent! Frank the weird is back.

The only thing I don't like is the drums, it's played too well with a clean studio sound.
With Tom Waits at the production it would have been diferent!
