A request has reached me from CV asking for the support of FB net forum members to help promote I Burn Today/Honeycomb in the UK and Europe. This ties in with a comment Jon Tiven made on another thread -I'm sure Jon and Back Porch would support this approach too. Basically, the idea is that forum members request I Burn Today, and in a few weeks tracks from Honeycomb, on radio shows (including internet stations), and indeed anywhere where Frank's music can be promoted. I Burn Today is already getting good airplay on a number of stations here, for example, BBC Radio 6.

If you belong and already contribute to other music-related internet sites or message boards it would seem to be a good idea to promote Honeycomb on these sites too. However, joining a fan forum with the opening gambit of "Hi, I'm new here, but have you heard the great new album from FB..." is likely to be counterproductive!

What is in it for you/FB net, I hear you cry? Ehhh, admittedly not much, although CV have been very good at keeping FB net in the loop with Frank-related news, and the promotion of Frank's music in itself is surely a good thing, and in this particular instance might lead to a "Honeycomb" tour, if sufficient sales are generated.

So, if you are willing to help, request/promote away!

Honeycomb is record of the week at the only decent radio station when it comes to pop/rock/etc music here in Berlin, RadioEINS. I was about to write them an email suggesting to make Honeycomb rotw since its the new FB with great storys and songs on it and a nice history to tell. Only to discover that from today on, it is! How cool.

So, for the next week HC will get presented every day (and I think a few times a day). They tell something about the artist and the making of the record, play some interview-bits, talk about one particular song and in the end play that song.
And in some record stores the current RadioEins record of the week (perhaps even the older ones) gets presented, so that you can listen to the CD and radio-reviews over headphones.

Browsing the playlists of last weeks evening(music)shows I found out, that they were playing HC all the time: Sing for joy, Lone child, Dark end of the street, Selkie Bride and Song of the shrimp (three times in a row, to compare it with Elvis´ and Towns Van Zandt´s versions).
I heard nothing of it. Must have been bad luck.

Does FB have a MySpace profile? That would be another way to get the word out. The Flaming Lips, NIN, Weezer, Billy Corgan, and a load of other artists promote themselves on MySpace and I think there are 22 million users on the site if I read correctly. I posted a brief HONEYCOMB review and sent it out.

Andy, Andy
Travelling soon you will be
You are a pest
And I shall not rest
Until you're far away from me

Andy, Andy
A long and pleasant journey
We shall be calm
When you're out of harms
Way across the great sea

Andy, Andy
We will miss you, sorely
It won't be the same
Without you, you pain
So have a good one, Andy

Great stuff Tre, and I love your comment on the users' comments on Metacritic too - "It warms the cockles of my Brummie heart" - you get your background into everything! Did you actually write this?! Good stuff from Scarla O et al too:

I am away to New England and Vancouver for 3 weeks - keep up the good work everyone, I don't think that I will be online much (is that the sound of cheering I hear?).

Great Review, Starme!

I love this:
"Part of the Joy of all of Frank Blacks work is the layers and thought he applies to everything he does, you scratch the surface of any song and you will find a deeper meaning and a fine story, there is nothing bubblegum about this record."

My review which should appear on amazon in the next week or so.

Before you jump on me for this, I can't write and this isn't meant to be technically correct it's meant to gush. I put myself out there and I did it to help further the cause. I don't know how often people pay attention to the amazon reviews but a gushy review can't hurt any, thanks to kelladwella for the suggestion.

*****Sing for Joy!

A far cry from the Pixies and a smallish step from Frank Black and The Catholics, Honeycomb is an alt-americana delight. People who know his previous solo work may be surprised at the direction this album takes, but it serves only to prove that whatever Sir Frank of Black turns his hand to, he turns it well.
The album begins with the deceptively cheerful 'Selkie Bride' the upbeat rolling guitars hiding the darker meaning of the lyrics. As with many Frank songs, on the surface a lyrically weird ditty, but scratch a little deeper and you find a tale of northern lore and a woman half of the land half of the sea who is captured by a cruel husband and can only return to the sea if she forsakes entirely her land life...

And from its strong beginning the album stays strong, the single 'I Burn Today' a beautiful tune with mild yet haunting playing, uplifted by melodic and lighthearted bells. 'Lone Child' a battle weary, quietly raging tune, makes its position with gentle yet pointed grace. In 'Another Velvet Nightmare' Frank sings like a world hardened drunk against a backdrop of musical perfection. Much justice is done on the cover of the classic 'Dark End of the Street', and similarly on the albums other cover 'Song of The Shrimp', both songs are serviced well by the Frank touch. 'Go Find Your Saint' is, to my mind, the most powerful song on the album and most like his previous solo works, lyrically fast and clever this song is a pleasure to the ears. What could have been an awkward duet with his ex wife 'Strange Goodbye' is actually a very moving and honest handshake at the end of the relationship and special because of this. 'Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day' is a tune that defies you to not sing along to it, I have discovered this to be a physical impossibility. The title track 'Honeycomb' is simple in structure but lyrically profound and full of questioning and fully justified in it's position as title track. 'My Life is in Storage' is an epic of a song in two phases, the first is the punchy vocal phase followed by the technically brilliant extended guitar solo. 'Atom in my heart' is a sweet, charming and deeply romantic song, followed by 'Violet' the song of his new love and sung straight from the heart with no fancy bypass. The album finishes triumphantly with 'Sing For Joy' which on first listen sounds like it is sung with anything less than joy but on subsequent hearings it reveals itself to be a wry and clever dark little tune about making the best of it all. Part of the Joy of all of Frank Blacks work is the layers and thought he applies to everything he does, you scratch the surface of any song and you will find a deeper meaning and a fine story, there is nothing bubblegum about this record.

Overall the album is understated in it's genius, but genius it is. It's a grower, a quiet little creeper into the psyche. Mellow and heartfelt it is hard to recognise it as the same Frank Black Francis from Pixies fame until you realise that in all of his guises, the man makes some beautiful music.

Honeycomb got a review on Mariella Frostrup's Green Room last night, first mention at 1:46:30 into the show. About a minute or so of I Burn Today was played. It ultimately doesn't really pass judgement, just describes it somewhat. Anyway, here's the link:

Today "Honeycomb" is BBC Radio 6's album of the day. As yet they ahve not updated their website, and the feature is still on Friday's album. Still, I'm sure it will be being played on every show:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/whatson/aotd/

As for Radio Scotland, I heard tracks on 3 different shows in the last few days.
