I think Frank Black is underrated as a poet. Looking at some of his lyrics written down, they can be very beautiful and even romantic, you wouldnt even know the song kicked ass too.

Lately I've had this line in my head, from "Smoke Up"

Stone was in me
When I was rougher
Now my power has suffered in this hour of my oversleep

---

Its got such an interesting rhythm to the words, the way he arranges them...

Another example would be the whole last part of "Speedy Marie"...I showed that to a friend of mine online (he never heard the song) and his reaction was "That is beautiful"

---
Juxtaposed in each moment's sight
Everything that I ever saw
And my one delight
Nothing can strike me in such awe
Mouth intricate shapes the voice that speaks
Always it will soothe
Rarer none are the precious cheeks
Is the size of each sculpted tooth
Each lip and each eye

Wise is the tongue, wet of perfect thought
And softest neck where always do I
Lay my clumsy thoughts
She is that most lovely art
Happy are my mind and my soul and my heart
---

What are other peoples favorite poetic Frank Black lyrics?

Forget you yin
And go fuck your yang
It seems that you rang
And it seems I'm only answering

Remember when
I was almost ready?
But it was then
That I was gone already

And I'm still around
But who wants to listen
To my voice in
Your prison?

As I've stated somewhere here before, I must give
Bro Fu credit for educating me on this interesting
lyric of "Sun Bitch".

I've always sung "sonabitch"...hmmm, well...

YEP, AIN'T LIFE GRAND

Is it time to get up?
Now you’re breaking up
Though I know we are tough
I thought we’d lose control
And end up in the freezing cold

Goodbye, I’m blowing a kiss to you
So long, wonderful being you
Goodnight, we’ll soon be sleeping on the Fields of Marigold (x2)

My life was scattered in the breeze

I'm seeing how boring it gets
Back where the sun never sets
And a day is really two days

I was feeling so tired inside
My eyes were stitched open so wide
It was making me kind of uptight
oh yeah all right and the powerman said
"don't ya rile em'" going asylum...tonight

this will go on and on untill there are no more....theyre all so fuckin' good

Like the notes between the chords of this song
Impossibilities would be great
I could attend I would not be late
For the gathering of the society of the oddballs

I'LL BE ELECTRIC BLUE (sendmesomefrank.com)

We had a drink
I sang some songs
You had to think
I didn't know my place at all

Please pardon me
For these my wrongs
And I will leave
But I won't put your party face on

I'll be blue

I'LL BE BLUE (DITS)

Stood in my path
Down in the street
I wouldn't laugh
And you looked so stunned

I think you
Had no clue

It's almost night
And just might
Head to the strand down by the sea

Down at the edge
Edge of the world
That's where I really want to be

And if I'm broke
Then I will cope
Just rolling around is fine with me

Yeah dizzy g, great show, and yes, I do remember Frank bragging about Shazeb Andleeb being his most rock and roll song EVER. I've often thought about that while listening to it, and for me, it's good, but not the most Rockin.

Yeah, dizzy g (sorry for the delayed reply)I was there...Tuesday, March 5, 1996, 8:00 p.m., 18 & over show at 328 Performance Hall with Johnny Polonsky opening, $10 General Admission.

I was center stage 'bout 10 heads back...

I still have my ticket stub, I'll see if I can scan and post a picture of it here. On the back of the ticket I wrote, "Phil & I, great show, Hot & loud, Frank - big and bald, music from Frank's I, II, III"

And we'll sail into the heavens

Oh yeah, check it out, when I got divorced back in '89 the only Frank music I had was Come On Pilgrim/Surfer Rosa and Doolittle. There damn sure wasn't any time for crying when listening to those.

Cactus, Brick is Red, 13 Baby, Hey and Gouge Away eased my pain...

Yeah, wives, in particular, and marriage, in general, both suck,...most of the time...[EDIT: and forget about soulmates, that fantasy quickly unravels when the shit hits the fan (divorce), huh!]

...You're right though, Honeycomb is good for what's ailing you and Show Me Your Tears is good for that too.

...Black Letter Days can get a little depressing with all those "love sick" songs (Cold Heart of Stone, How You Went So Far, I will Run After You).

Hey that's tough about the divorce, but hopefully you'll be better without her. At least you didn't have any kids with her, did you? Kids are great, but they do make divorcing a lot more complicated (stating the obvious).

She picked up the phone

The people they groaned
The world was destroyed

This love is a cancer in me
I can feel it advancing in me

Black clouds roll through my mind
Who says anyway these halls are sovereign?

Umm, for me personally, I'm guilty of often coming home without the sugar and putting tears in my woman's eyes, and my woman has been known to forget the sugar from time to time.

Anyway, that's how the song speaks to me and it may not be the intended message.

I don't really know what to make of the pumpkin part...

...as for "paperbag french fries" that reminds me of my daddy frying up some homestyle sliced potatoes for dinner once or twice a week and then putting them on a folded paperbag to soak up the grease before serving. Of course, when I was a boy we didn't have paper towels, we had paperbags and other such stuff.

Hey dizzy g, post away man, loved to hear some of those honeycomb stories from David Hood. You can post it in the Honeycomb thread or wherever you think it fits.

When I said "this is the home of the 'Comb Cats" I was referring to frankblack.net and the incredible thread dedicated in their honor by fbc. I wish Nashville was home to all of the 'Comb Cats, but we're not that lucky.

How 'bout them DRIVE BY TRUCKERS, huh!

"Sing for Joy"

thanks for the advice there oldmaninacoffecan. im kinda new here so i wouldve felt a little nervous just posting my dates here.
did you mean nashville when you said "this is the home of the comb cats". i was just refering to david hood and spooner oldham. The rest have just recorded here on a trillion monumental tracks (as u probablyknow).
f.y.i ive had some really interesting conversations with mr. hood about the making of honeycomb (writing the charts, discovering how interesting franks progressions are etc.) check out his site, its hoodbass.com. he's just a really nice dude with a world class track record. he played w the godfather j.b. and the queen of soul for god sake
back on subject.....what is there to say? still i cant be silent. hear the cult of ray, and youll be enlightened. people there no fun

Oh yeah, make sure you post up any show dates your band has coming up, this is a good place to get a little buzz goin about good bands especially if any of the people here at fb.net live in a town you're going to be playing in.

Hey man, what are you kidding me, this is the home of the 'Comb Cats. You can't be too long winded when it comes to posting up about "All Things Frank", and especially an encounter as interesting as you had. Hey dizzy g, it's all in the quote from one of Kathryn's posts:

SELKIE BRIDE

I always thought the singer was telling his oceanic love creature to leave him the hell alone, until I was enlightened by Kathryn:

"Selkies (also known as silkies or selchies) are mythological creatures in Irish and Scottish mythology that can transform themselves from seals to humans. The legend apparently originated in the Orkney Islands, where "selkie" is simply the Orcadian word for "seal".
Selkies are able to become humans by shedding their seal skins, and can revert to seal form by putting the skins back on. Stories concerning selkies are generally romantic tragedies. A human and a selkie fall in love, but after a while the selkie becomes restless, and decides to return to the sea. Sometimes the human will not know that their lover is a selkie, and wakes to find them gone. Other times the human will hide the selkie's skin, thus preventing them from returning to seal form."

So, the irony in the lyrics "PLEASE DON'T RETURN AGAIN" holds it together nicely and makes it one of his best love songs

have any of you guys ever read anything about selkies and what they are? Do a google search on selkies and read on the origin. after i read about it i cant help but to smile every time i hear that tune. some of the lyrics like "take off your coat and we'll fall in love in my boat", i thought sounded kind of like filler or umm...not very thought out, i was wrong.
Human form she had in crecent city
She showed me her pity lucky me
in a storm so bad, the worst of the autumn
she came from the bottom of the sea

Please wont you stay a while
and give me your coat
and well fall in love in my boat
youll be my selkie bride

PLease give me no denial,a promise i give
ill forsake the life that i live
now youre by my side

if you return again ill be the saddest man
my lips will burn your skin
if you return again please dont return again

human form she had in cresent city she showed me her pity lucky me
on that day so breezy and sunny she melted like honey in the sea
