Posted - 04/25/2005 : 17:52:58 On his recent visit to the forum Frank mentioned (after being asked) that of his records he cares in particular for DW (He didn't go as far as say it's his favorite, but he mentioned nothing else).
Not that it makes any difference, but I think it's a particulary weak record. It's definately got some strong songs, but it's unfocused and disjointed as an "album". I always thought it would be better if they combined it with SSMVD and weeded out some of the weaker cuts. This is all besides the point. Is there ANYBODY here who would chose DW as their favorite FB record? I think it's at the bottom of my list.
Of course the artist is probably the worst judge of their own work, and he might even be taking into consideration that they had great fun making the record or something like that. No big deal, just thought it would make an interesting topic. |

except Pistolero, of course.

Posted - 04/26/2005 : 22:03:23 I hate Punk Rock City. It proves that Frank is a human being. Frank Black and TOTY woould lead one to believe that he is a superhuman rock songwriter. I mean, BOTH of those albums are ineffably smart. |

Posted - 04/26/2005 : 21:26:38 Yeah, you've gotta remember it's relative. I love all those albums, but ranking amongst them, that's how it'd go. COR and Brown are great, but I usually don't have the compunction to listen to them when I think, "What Frank record should I spin?" If I do happen to listen to them, however, I always think, "I KNOW this is good, but I keep forgetting how good."
That said, I think some of FB's weakest tracks can also be found on COR including one of the few tracks I skip, Punk Rock City.

Posted - 04/26/2005 : 20:06:36 Yeah, but all in all what we'd all agree on is that Frank Black's stuff is in the best 2-3% of albums. It's all strong compared to 99.9% of what's out there |

Posted - 04/26/2005 : 16:42:01 COR is bitty, but Brown needs a few listens. I remember buying it when I was working over in Holland, and maybe sticking it on once(when my mates allowed me-one of my friends bought a ton of CDs and the CD player was always on!)and I was'nt too impressed. But when I listened to it again much later, it caught my ear. All My Ghosts, Solid Gold....King And Queen Of Siam rips of Pixies' Dead's chord progression a bit(if you wanna be picky!), but I like it. COR has some great stuff, but it could have been a lot better. In my opinion, it's one of those flawed records that has the makings of a really good album. |

Favourites: TOTY, DITS, Orange, BLD Middle: SMYT, Pistolero, DW Least: COR, Brown
Roughly. That's harder than I thought. COR and brown both have some great tracks. Actually, when I go back to the brown album I always remember, "Oh yeah, this is good." But there's never anything drawing me back, I guess

Posted - 04/26/2005 : 04:17:46 That's one of the best Pixies B-sides, in fact it's a favorite, there's just so many great songs to choose from!
It's funny, Devil's Workshop and Black Letter Days are the only two albums I hav'nt heard. I've seen DW at sale price before, for some reason I musta thought, "Oh, there's a few I don't have, I'll check that one out later!" So I'll have to to complete my collection soon. ;) |

Posted - 04/26/2005 : 03:31:33 Out Of State and San Antonio are two songs I play in heavy rotation, never a road trip goes by without these two. I have better versions of Modern Age and Velvety floating around I prefer to listen too and the rest, well other than having the most addicitive intros (Kingly Cave, Heloise, The Scene,...) there just some more Catholic songs to add to the collection which includes far more superior songs i'd rather hear. And do.

Posted - 04/26/2005 : 02:53:19 Yeah, DW is too patchy to be in my top 5 but I don't think it's a weak album since it has such wonderful songs as Velvety, San Antonio, Fields, etc... |

Posted - 04/26/2005 : 01:25:38 i'm probably not the only one but i listen to different cd's when i'm in different moods. for instance if i'm going for a long drive i like pistolero and black letter days. if i'm introducing someone to frank i go with teenager or orange album. but as far as listening at home and putting on headphones and drowning in the songwriting glory of the man i really like devil's and show me.
this post in no way discriminates against cult of ray, brown album, and dog in the sand. |

Posted - 04/26/2005 : 01:16:33 I like DW a lot, but I think it's very different from the others, as Scarla says, it's in the sequence of TOTY, and I love Velvety, His Kingly Cave, Modern Age, Are You Headed My Way? For me it's an album full of happiness, that's what I feel listening.
And the end is just perfect with Fields Of Marigold!

Obviously! (I mean, I'm not BLT but the answer seems pretty obvious)
DW isn't in my top 3 but some of his best songs ever are on it (SA Tx, His Kingly Cave & Fields Of Marigold). It's certainly not weak. A bit short though.

Posted - 04/25/2005 : 20:52:13 I agree with floop. There are many lovable songs. But as an album, it doesn't really work. It's suprisingly lo-fi.
Unlike SMYT, it really doesn't benefit from its live to 2-track production. The songs aren't really that rootsy here, and I'd love to hear a version of "Out of State" or "His Kingly Cave" recorded a la Yellow Album.
One last thing. The piano solo in "San Antonio" really pisses me off. About the only bone I have to pick with any of EDF's work, but it's a major glitch. It sounds so timid.
I do like the fact that the album's so short. Reminds me of the Ramones. |

Posted - 04/25/2005 : 20:48:24 Man.. I love Devil's Workshop. I feel its one of his most confident and fun sounding albums in a while. I don't think it fits in with Black Letter Days at ALL (which is pretty amazing) so I don't get when people say it should have been joined with it.
I think some of his best songwriting is on DW... Heloise, San Antonio Texas, Out of State, Fields of Marigold, Bartholomew are all among my favorite Frank Black songs! I even sort of (SORT OF) stole a line from Bartholomew for one of my own songs (shhh don't tell).
I think it's a unique little album, and also I think his voice sounds great on it... He sounds really youthful on this album, like Teenager of the Year youthful.. anyone else ever notice that?
