Posted - 04/19/2005 : 07:24:33 What is your favorite Frank "mistake" or "extra" on a song. For example, I love the "HUH!" at the end of Men In Black or the "oh, I better not" at the end of The Man Who Was Too Loud. Also, the laughing in 666 or the "sounds like the Cars" in the accoustic version of Czar.
Anyway, if you know what I mean, please share your own favorite Frank "screw up".

Hell yeah, this will help me out on the mission, but what it will do even more than that is greatly improve my Frank Black listening pleasure, especially the live CD's. I only had one in my collection and that was the show at the Beta Bar. But these, fuckin' Aye Guitar Man.

Hey, no worries mate, I'll purchase another copy (as opposed to burning a copy and stealing from The Man, I feel guilty enough for buying B-sides on ebay when none of that money goes to The Man, but hey, they're out of print and I can't get those B-sides anywhere else that I know of, so purchasing another copy of SMYT EP will make me feel a little better) and put it in the mail to you within the next week or so.

Posted - 06/02/2005 : 18:04:18 Fucking Aye, a mission of the utmost importance...
Alright, I like the plan, after we meet back here in 2 weeks, we may want to think about you listening to the last three and b's and me listening to the first 3 and b's and then compare notes, your ear may hear something mine doesn't and the other way as well...
What's up with you, why haven't you gotten the Show me your tears EP? If you can't get it across the Pond, let me know, I'll buy it again and send it to you, after all, it's just the price of a Big Mac Combo Meal without the heartburn and saturated fats...(there's the 6th time)
Anyway, good idea, I'll get to work on the mission ASAP!

Posted - 06/02/2005 : 09:00:24 Ahhhhhhh, I just found another Bofoor. I was sitting at my desk this morning listening to "A Dab'll Do You" from the "Show Me Your Tears" EP - exclusive i-tunes, and there it was at the end of the song, the 2:28 point into the song (the song ends at 2:36), while the band is finishing the end of the song jam (which begins at 1:49 and ends the song at 2:36, and by the way contains a jazzy piano) and before Scott plays the last drum beats, The Man appears to give his approval of this take by saying, "OK".
This fuckin live to 2 track is full of gems like this. There is no telling how many undiscovered bofoors there are in Frank's recordings.
And hey, if you don't have the "Show Me Your Tears" EP or the "Sugar Daddy" song by Frank on the "Wig in a Box" soundtrack, then you are missing out on some good music by The Man. And if I've said it once here, I must have said 5 times, these musical gems can be yours for the price of a value combo meal at your favorite fast food restaurant ($3.96 plus $.99 = $4.95) and they come without heartburn and saturated fats. So go get 'em, they're good!

A good while ago, I was in a friend's car and he was playing some interesting music which turned out to be Laurie Anderson. I was thinking about checking out some of her albums. Is'nt she married to David Byrne or someone like that?! |

Posted - 05/05/2005 : 19:49:33 I was also thinking about what people's favorite Frank vocal would be. Maybe "underrated vocal" is what I mean...well, anyway, I would make a seperate topic but I am not exactly sure what I would call it. I loove how Frank's voice sounds on Skeleton Man which is a song I always forget about until I hear it again, if that makes any sense. If not, oh well. It's late and I'm tired.

Posted - 04/30/2005 : 20:07:42 Hey Boss, thanks for the clarification on the "Do Nothing" bofoor...So, whose idea is it to keep these bofoors in the final cut for the record?...Is it you, the boys in the band, Ben Mumphrey, Matt Yelton, et. al., or more of a collective decision? Or is it left in the final cut for the record only because that one cut is the best attempt on the song?...In other words, if you have two equally good cuts of a song, however one contains bofoors and the other doesn't, will you include the bofoor or nonbofoor cut on the record?...If you ask me, give me the bofoors everytime...they really go hand in hand with the live-to-two-track recordings...And as I've said many times before, they add additional flavor to the songs!
And, please don't think this is "much ado about nothing"...All Things Frank are paramount!
And, while I've got your ear or eye, as the case may be, let me know when you'll be back in Guitar Town again, I assume you'll be back to gather up the boys in the band for your Honeycomb tour, just email me, let me know when you'll be in town, and I'll be your hostest with the mostest here in Nashville,...we'll start out the day down at Loveless Cafe [http://lovelesscafe.com/] for some good 'ole country ham, bisquits and red-eyed gravy, saugrahm malasis, grits, coffee and a large glass of butter milk, then it'll be time for a mid-morning nap, afterwards I'll pick you up and we'll head over to Sylvan Park Restaurant [http://hollyeats.com/SylvanPark.htm] for some southern fried chicken, corn, green beans, squash, turnip greens, cornbread, fudge pie and wash it all down with some sweet ice tea,...You'll probably want to go rest up and take a nap after lunch...Then, you can get together with the band, practice a little, and when you're ready for dinner we can head down to Ashland City to Dozier's Boat Dock for the best fried catfish and hushpuppies you've ever put in your mouth...After dinner you may want to rest up a little bit, and I'll pick you up at 9:30 p.m. for a night of honky-tonkin beginning at Tootsie's down on Lower Broad [http://tootsies.net/]...and, to finish the night off how 'bout a little culinary nightcap at the Waffle House!
Yeah, me too, I'm starving just thinking about it. Excuse me... [Honey, fry up some cornbread would ya? Nah, it's never too late for a skillet of your cornbread]...
Anyway, I look forward to your reply to this post, and, email me when your ready to do some serious eating, Southern Style!

Oh yeah, you gotcha a "bofoor" there matto. I hadn't noticed that one before.
I'll tell you though, I hear, "Quick tune for me, sorry"...., check it out and let me know what you think...It that's correct it would appear that Frank wanted to do this one, not spend much time on it, but still do it, cause he wanted to, I guess he likes the song,(cover version of the original written by Lynval Golding of The Specials: http://thespecials.com/lyricview.php?sid=23) and afterall, he is The Man.
Hey FBC, matto's got him a bofoor, check it out.
I dig bofoors. They make me feel as if I'm sittin right there in the studio with 'em. I mean, you know, they don't have to leave that shit in there, but they do, and it adds so much flavor to it. I'll tell you something else that adds flavor to this song, and that is the countdown by, I assume, Scott on the drums and all the while you hear the hum from Frank's or Lyle's Guitar,...for me, it just doesn't get any better than that...Fuckin' Rock and Roll like it oughta' be.
[Oh yeah, let me provide a citation to the record for the term "bofoor", see "Rich Gilbert Chat Log - Apr 24 2005", Rich's response posted at 12:42:41 "No nobody has come up with a name for the bofoor and after song stuff...",...ergo, "bofoors"]

Music man I am, but personally I have no such term for these things. I'll go check my bible and mentors away from here and let you know. I just play and leave in whatever sounds good. Alot of this stuff gets left on the "cutting room floor", too many folk press that stop button way to soon. FB's never too shy to leave in something that I myself think adds to the song. It makes it seem and sound all the more live.
I'll get back to you unless someone beats me to it.

Posted - 04/23/2005 : 10:59:49 I haven't heard that one. his sense of humour and playfulness is second to none....love it!
This reminds me of a solo acoustic version of 'The Man Who Was Too Loud' where Fb messes up a few chords, adds a few "whoops!" and even stops to start where he left off with the correct chord. I think there's someone there called Kyle (maybe the dj, i forget) who frank gets to sing the lead guitar parts along with him. It includes an extended ending with frank ad libbing a few words. Guess you have to hear it to feel the humour. One of my favourite solo performances. |

Posted - 04/23/2005 : 10:44:36 My favorite improvised Frank moment is from some radio interview I downloaded...
He's playing "You Never Heard About Me" acoustic by himself (i love how he plays b-sides so much) and in the middle of the song, while still strumming chords he starts asking the DJ woman "What do you think this song is about?"
She is uncomfortable cause this is weird for her, she's like "umm...Is it about you?"
Frank says "It's not about me.....c'mon...guess"
and she just stays quiet, and Frank is like "She's not guessing"
and then she goes "I dont want to interrupt the tune, man!"
then he goes back into the song but then messes up the chords and is like "woops!"...
Its a hilarious performance...Actually it really inspired me to be more loose and casual with my music...not be so nervous at shows and to chill the FUCK out.
