I’ve no number if you want to call
Massif Centrale
There’s an ivy crawling on my gate
I stay up late

Sleep in gardens where I play my lute
Where I laid my roots
Now the clock is stopping faithfully
She’s taking me

Monsieurs at nine
That is my promise
Have some wine
Please don’t run away
Madams at nine
Baby, honest
Have some wine
Please don’t run away

I thought I’d take a chance
And forget about the States
I thought I’d gravitate
To the hills of central France

And so I left the world below
And into the rocks I climbed
Now I’m living in the cold
But I’m looking for the sign

That’s the sign
Of her love behavior
That’s the sign
That I’m looking for

And I’ve seen you in the movies
And I’ve seen you at the store
And if I stare a little more
Well, that’s because you move me

I can see it in your eyes
I can hear it when you talk
Darling when I see you walk
You seem so very nice

That’s the sign
Of her love behavior
That’s the sign
That I’m looking for

It sure is cold here in the summer
I haven’t got a number
But the sky is very bright
And the sun is very clear

I can smell it in the wind
‘Cause I guess that it’s the time
And I saw the way you grinned
You were giving me the sign

That’s the sign
Of her love behavior
That’s the sign
That I’m looking for [x2]

Monsieurs at nine
That is my promise
Have some wine
Please don’t run away
Madams at nine
Baby, honest
Have some wine
Please don’t run away
No, please don’t run away, no no
No, please don’t run away

as usual any insights, facts, theories or quotes most welcome for his song, here's a couple of loose quotes to kick things off:

"A big rocker like 'Massif Centrale' was easy to write and record"

posted by billgoodman (11/19/2003) here: http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4080 from interview in the dutch metro, sadly the link to the artice itself is broken

"I mean, maybe MASSIF CENTRALE has a ray of hope, but even then, I don't know, central France can be really cold and lonely."

The performance on the christmass album is majestic

a passionate vocal and he makes the guitar hum

superior to the album version

I always wondered since that album (SMYT) was so personal, was their anything about masif central (or nadine) that was?
kathryn Posted - 03/28/2005 : 16:56:44
Thanks, OldMan. I so easily become confused by things.

Thanks, too, for the invitation but I'll pass. The three of you
fellas are doing a bang-up job admiring one another.
I am in no position to receive admiration anyway, as I hate
myself immensely.

Well Kathryn, now that you have interrupted the meeting of our Mutual Admiration Society, may I point out that you seem to have missed the point of our meeting. I was receiving some much deserved props on two of my posts, the first from fbc when he astutely observed the following on 3/27/05 at 11:41:11:

"and what an opinion Oldman.

Very interesting indeedy

fbc was, of course, commenting on my personal interpretation of Massif Central immediately preceeding his post.

And the second was from both fumanbru and fbc, when they generously shared their appreciation of my post stating that Frank was an artist, his music is art, layered with intented and unintended meanings and interpretations, and Frank has a brillant way of not strictly defining or explaining his art, but rather stating, sincerly and not as a smart ass, that the meaning of the song is in the lyrics.

So you see, my dear Kathryn, none of our off topic posts were meant for the database, they were discussions from the meeting of our Mutual Admiration Society, of which you certainly qualify for admission if you so desire.

kathryn Posted - 03/28/2005 : 12:00:27
Yes, but ... we shouldn't go for our own interpretations
rather a collection of info about each song, with said
info coming from as close a source to the man
as possible.

nothing wrong with a little bit'a lovin', k. plenty o'room for all.

and any interpretation of the lyrics from this forum is insightful. either of the song or the poster.

At the risk of interrupting this love fest ...

I always thought that Monsieurs/Madams at 9
was Frank addressing his audience. You know, the
concert starts at 9? Maybe it's wishful thinking
on my part and not the least bit insightful.

fumanbru and frank black conspiracy,

Your recogition and appreciation of my wisdom is a testament to the wisdom that each of you possess. The respect that you show for your elders is an admirable attribute, the shortage of which has been greatly exagerated by my generation. I find much comfort in the realization that our community, society and world is a better place because of your generation.

Very truly yours,

Hey fbc, thanks for the props on my opinion!

You know, this is how I view The Man and his music, and I'm sure you share this opinion (the first part of it anyway), The Man is an artist (and no, not all musicians are artists, many fall short for all sorts of reasons) and his music is art.

(2nd part) Art is multi-layered, some of the layers intended by the artist, and some unintended. Many artists shy away from strictly defining and explaining their art and as a result the art is not limited by their strict definition or explanation.

I've always admired Frank's response when asked about the meaning of one of his songs, you know, it goes something like, "the meaning to the song is in the lyrics, if you want to know what it is about look to the lyrics". By doing this, he gives an earnest response to the question, he points the way, and then it is up to the one asking the question to see for themselves.
frank black conspiracy Posted - 03/27/2005 : 13:36:06
definately. but hopefully he realises it's what fans do.

i bet we can explain away lyrics that don't even have any meaning to Fb, just random words and thoughts.
that's what i love about these things, how people interpret the lyrics themselves.
watching folk trying to out smart the next with a deeper explaination and probably never getting close to the truth.
it's fun.

I love it when we try to analyse songs but I think that if Frank's reading us, he must be laughing his ass off!

you want crude interpretations here you go, this makes me think of animal mating, sniffing out when the female is primed for baby making and checking it's cool to get with the jiggy jiggy.

This is all really interesting though, the ufo references and the lute, and jediroller I now have a toga-fied frank in my head, it's no bad thing. Great work guys!

Yep, that's always been my take on it. As Lonely Persuader said, primeval and basic instincts.

I see the singer getting away from it all, and then getting a little bored, venturing into town and being attracted to someone he meets.

When we strip it all away, what we are left with is one of our basic human needs, desires and urges: romance.

IMO, the reference to Monsieurs and Madams at Nine [9:00 pm] is the singer's way of reassuring the woman that he has met that he has invited others to his house this evening and not to be alarmed or frightened by this stranger that she has just met(yes, you've just met me, but I not a creep, or a psycho path, come on over, there will be other guests,...here, have some more wine, relax...)

Nothing for the database here, just wanted to post my opinions

yep it was for le cigare volant (in the "oddballs 2" annoucement thread)

Yes, I'd like to see that in the db, that it is a region in central France and misspelled (I thought that Frank actually apologized to someone on here for that?).

I seem to remember reading the transcripts of one of FB's live chats here on the forum and that's where he apologized for it...i think so...

something like "oops, pardon moi" was his reply. or it could have been a misspelling of "le cigare volant"...one of the two, methinks...

anyone else remember that???

Pan played the flute, I think...

Yes, I believe the Pan-pipes are the instrument with which he is most often associated. That's not to say there couldn't have been some myths where he played a lute, though.

quote:
Then of course there is the legend of Nero playing the lute while Rome was burning.

The expression is "Nero fiddled while Rome burned," which suggests a violin. Maybe that's a modernized version of the saying, though.

Wasn't Frank about to settle on 'Madames at Nine' as the album title before he had the inspiration to call it SMYT? I thought I read this somewhere. Dunno. But yes, MC is a great song. I too had the pleasure of hearing this song back in April of 2003 at an LA show, along with Manitoba and New House of the Pope. They were so exciting and sublime, and I could'nt wait for the album. When they played MC, they TORE into it with fury! It is a good memory.

Dean, can you also remind us all which language, civilization
and people survived, nay flourished? The Latin or the Greek?
Hm? Can you remind the group? Thanks, Dean.

wine wine wine.. wonder if its that new pope house-y stuff kathryn mentioned... is drink just a good topic to write about or is frank trying to tell us something.....
Cult_Of_Frank Posted - 03/23/2005 : 11:05:03
It's true. We invented them, and geological history be damned!

Also, Latin was nothing more than a small sect of Greeks who could not keep up intellectually and were forced to create a dumbed-down language for themselves. Interesting note: Within this sect was an even smaller sect who could not keep up with the "Latins" and so created pig latin. True story.

*cough*

Did Denis just say something? I thought not.

Tre, I think the db should mention what danjersey's talking about -- how Frank perform this solo before the CD came out and before it had a title, and
referred to it as "one of our new weird songs."

Latin?

(refrains form saying syphillis refrains from saying...)

Did minstrels wander france too? I might look that up. And this no number thing, is that because in france they don't have telephones? hehe kidding there.

ok serious face. ahem.

Frank talked about Massif Central (the place, not the song) as the "French Transylvania", saying he was appreciating its amazing landscape and its peacefulness http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=3889

Also, when it comes to rhyming with "roots", "lute" is better than, say, "Fender Telecaster".

Cult_Of_Frank Posted - 03/23/2005 : 10:04:49
Yeah, but somehow I think that the imagery Frank was going for is more associated with minstrels than mythology. Sitting there, strumming, eking out a modest living. That's all.

Of course everyone knows that ANYTHING can be traced back to the Greeks. :P
