Frank Black is on the frontpage in the dutch version of the free newspaper 'Metro'. I've got to tell you that the newspaper got 1 million readers, so it's pretty darn huge. I know it isn't a real newspaper (it's a free one you get handed out in the subway, that's why it's called 'Metro), but a lot of people read it. He mentioned on the frontpage with a picture, and then the real story is on page 18, I will translate this tomorrow, because I'm going to Radiohead today.
here's a link to see it yourself http://www.clubmetro.nl/content/acrobat/amsterdam/NLAMS_20031119_A_Metro.pdf
acrobate reader required
the real story is on page 16 of PDF file and also has a picture with it!
FB never gets that sort of attention in the dutch press, I love this!

Mmmm... Strangely, when I opened the pdf file, Frank's photo isn't the first one that I noticed. Why is that?
Thanks for the link and thanks in advance for the translation. We have Metro here too, I'll check it out next week to see if they talk about him before the Paris gig.

Radiohead was great, truly great, as for the translation I'm a bit sick (since the concert) so I'll do it as soon as I get better

''There's something satisfying in embracing cliché's''
People who have been paying atention, saw it coming: Frank Black, who had succes with his alt. rock band the Pixies, shifts more and more towards rootsy music like blues and country. It's very clear on his latest, surprisingly strong record 'Show me you tears'
Metro: Where does this growing interest in country come from?
FB: Well, I bought some country shirts and boots lately, so there you go. And two people in my band play pedal steel, so you sound country very soon.
Metro: Does the pain in your personal life make it easier to play country? It is a genre that's traditionally full of pain and sadness
FB: That's a cliché, but I do live up to it. And it's a personal record, yes. I have always expressed myself into my music, but in a more abstract way. I like to be less abstract these days. There were some roadsongs on my last record Black Letter Days. That's a cliché too. There's something satisfying in embracing cliché's.
Metro: You record your records on two-track for awhile, all live, no overdubs. That seems a quick way to work: play and it's on tape in one take.
Frank Black:That only seems to be the case. We had to play some songs a hundred times before they were record OK. A big rocker like 'Massife Centrale' was easy to write and record, but we had to work very long on a 'simple' song like 'The Snake'. There are 5 people in the band and we rented more musicians so we could use them when there's a overdub normally. I don't want it to sound very sloppy or lo-fi or unfinished. We try to sound as produced as possible within the boundaires of the two tracks. It pushes you to play good. It's also a good rehearsal for shows.
Metro: Do you find it hard that you will never be as popular as with the pixies?
Frank Black: No, not at all. People want to consume mass-products. They want McDonalds and Starbucks. What can you do about it? Make a law to forbid Starbucks? No, it doesn't hurt me at all.
Metro: Do you play pixies songs live?
Frank Black: Yeah, there are about ten songs in our repertiore and there are always some of them on the setlist.
After this not so groundbreaking interview there's a bit about the reunion of the pixies, which the author would like. But he says: untill it will happen we can survive easily with 'Show me your tears'.

I don't understand how that's a surprise; you gotta get 'em somewhere in order to record this way.

Ok, but I still feel kinda weird about it (that's my problem, and I'll get over it) - are they (the rented musicians) listed in the liner notes? is this a common practice? Ach - sorry, I didn't realize this was comon knowledge. meep! |

Very nice work, Jop! Thanks a lot for the translation.
I wonder if the interviewer asked Frank if the rumours were true. It would have been quite silly for him not to ask. And if so, why isn't there anything about it in the interview? Did Frank ask him not to kill the buzz?
Oh well, maybe he just declined to comment.

apl4eris, your dutch is good!
and no there wasn't anything about the reunion in the interview, just some thoughts by the author.
and yes the interview did say 'rented' musicians. I knew it was going to be something that was going to be discussed, but I look twice and the text said 'huren' which means renting. It's very obvious he has to pay them, but I can imagine some people will play for free as long as the can play with him

Well, Frank says there are five people in the band - so I am guessing the "rented" people consist of Stan Ridgeway, Joey Santiago, Eric Drew Feldman, etc. who are billed as "additional musicians" in the liner notes. I think it IS common practice to have other people play on your records...is it just the term "rented" that you object to? |

Oh no! not at all! I read it as them renting some unnamed studio musicians just to fill out the extra parts - it was the "stranger" "studio musician" interpretation I had that I was weirded out by. oops. Sorry to cause a ruckus! ;) I understand who they were now (just the guys in the liner notes, not extras). Boy, do I feel dumb |
