Posted - 03/08/2005 : 09:55:50 In a collective push to get our song db as chock full of information as possible, we're going to experiment with posting a new song every couple days to the forum. This is where you come in. If you know anything about the song (or are interested in trying to find out through some skilled sleuthing) then the idea is that you post your knowledge (with source if possible). If it's conjecture, that's great too (just please label it as such), because it'll help get people talking.
El Barto, the Song DB Master, will then take what elements he can from the thread and put them into the db. It should be full of tidbits in no time!
What sort of information are we looking for? Anything that gives insight into the song's meaning, creation, etc for one. As well, interesting nuggets of information.
Examples:
Descriptions of (possible) song references
Quotes from FB or other notables on the song
Definitions to words you think might not be immediately obvious
If you're not sure about something, post and ask! You may jog someone's memory. - Cult_Of_Frank

LYRICS My favorite kiss Just when her mouth is warm Yes, that's definitely my favorite one
Earth be torn Let out the fabled twist The wanting is there But there is nothing left to go on
In seven days I'll be in Baltimore In two more weeks I'll be in Dallas/Fort Worth In one more minute I'll be gone
Sky be torn Send down the fabled twist The wanting is there But there is nothing left to go on
In seven days I'll be in Baltimore In two more weeks I'll be in Dallas/Fort Worth In one more minute I'll be gone [x2]
In one more minute I'll be gone
QUOTES "I like that one; that's a good road song, actually...Sort of like, in one more minute, I'll never see you again, darling, see you later; that's sort of romantic? We played that in Dallas." - Frank Black, London Radio Interview, 2003

Posted - 03/13/2005 : 21:45:56 I always thought this was frank's homage (were he to do one) to Willie Nelson, just 'cause the guitars sound similar, and one I could hear them playing together, I guess.
I like the song as a simple love song about missing his girl while out on the long lonely cold road touring but...could FB be referring to time travel? "the fabled twist"??? http://www.spacedaily.com/news/timetravel-01a.html
<précis>some scientists theorize that by twisting (circulating) a beam of light slowly enough (and at a temp of nearly absolute zero), the beam of light creates a vortex vortex in space within its circle. to twist time into a loop, add a second light beam, circulating in the opposite direction. Then if you increase the intensity of the light enough, space and time swap roles.
The energy needed to twist time into a loop is enormous, however... the effect of circulating light depends on its velocity: the slower the light, the stronger the distortion in space-time. (hence the "one more minute I'll be gone)
stuff to consider, I reckon. :) |

Posted - 03/10/2005 : 06:52:43 In a last attempt to drum up some stuff here I'll post some favourable and not so favourable review pulls for you to disagree/agree with...
If there's no more joy I'll start the next thread later today.
I had hoped that Black would provide some rays of hope, or in lieu of some more upbeat vibes, some creative and original sounds. Instead, I was greeted with sounds from the past, such as the Allman Brothers inspired steel guitar on "My Favourite Kiss." Sept 2003 --http://www.brockpress.com/news/2003/09/23/ArtsEntertainment/Cd.Reviews-473479.shtml?page=2
Every F B & the Cs album has a slight country influence yet on this record the country tinged tunes are absolutely exquisite. ‘Horrible Day’ and ‘My Favourite Kiss’ are both garnished with ringing guitar work and longing lyrics october 2003 http://www.americana-uk.com/html/october_2003.html
‘Show Me Your Tears’ glistens with raw diamond tracks that shimmer closely around Black's distinctive, flexible vocals. Songs such as 'My Favourite Kiss' and 'Massif Centrale' show The Catholics at their best- the musicianship is stunning, with instruments dipping and folding over one another like liquid velvet. It takes a few listens to peel off the layers, but the rewards are many. The production sounds glossy, but was in fact recorded on just two tracks, which is a fantastically punk rock approach to making an album. Most obviously, it has a very 'Californian' sound, recorded in L.A., and you can tell. Steel guitars played with bottle necks, dreamy harmonica and delicate piano all find a home in the mix and make for an album that sparkles with sunshine, behind the clouds http://www.logo-magazine.com/albums/display.asp?AlbumID=1886
Musical guests on the album include ex-Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago, and former Wall Of Voodoo mainman Stan Ridgway, who produces three tracks - 'My Favorite Kiss', 'Goodbye Lorraine' and 'This Old Heartache'. http://www.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/displayProductDetails.do?sku=96507
here's no mistaking the bittersweet sentiment and outright pain that informs other songs. "My Favorite Kiss" exudes weariness over the way the road pulls separates loved ones. http://www.popmatters.com/music/reviews/b/blackfrank-showme.shtml
he has abandoned such velocity for an ever-deepening vulnerability and honesty, an owning-up to emotion and helplessness. Reflective songs like "My Favorite Kiss" and "Manitoba" have a tenderness that retains a lyrical sophistication. http://www.westword.com/Issues/2003-09-04/music/playlist.html

Posted - 03/09/2005 : 11:06:29 Oh, what do Dutch mags know, BillG? ;-) An amazing song.
I haven't a clue so I won't guess.
Frank's quote says a lot. I don't think we can do better than that.
I still believe in the excellent joy of the Catholics |

Posted - 03/08/2005 : 14:39:21 I think the fabled twist is more of an expectation of things going wrong in reference to the divorce, that the marriage seemed great (because he said himself they never fell out of love) but the differing opinions on children was the twist in the tale, that the wanting is there i.e., the love never stopped, but nothing left to go on i.e. it's too big a difference to make things work
I think the whole song is about a goodbye kiss, the end of the marriage, one last kiss before he's gone forever...
thats my take (which is both obvious and probably wildly wrong)

Posted - 03/08/2005 : 14:33:38 Well, here's a place to start... what is this song about? Leaving Jean/his favourite kiss? What's the significance of
Earth/Sky be torn Send down the fabled twist The wanting is there But there is nothing left to go on
Fabled twist?
It sounds like a touring song at first glance, but maybe touring is part of the reason that "he'll be gone"?
