It appears that Cooking Vinyl will be putting out the Frank Black and the Catholics Box Set in the UK and Europe; Frank has mentioned the box set in another thread. I have just received the following from Bob Allen at Cooking Vinyl, please note that you have until Friday coming to influence the content of the Box Set:

"So this is the plan so far.....
The concept is for the 6 Catholic albums and 1 disk of rarities and a live album. Any other ideas for cool things to put in the box?
Do you think that you might be able to get me a list of anything else that the fans would like to see in this special set? I need to get back to the Boss by Friday though."

Please post ideas/requests here! I will pass on a link to this thread to the great Bob Allen at Cooking Vinyl.

they actually did play assif centrale at the sheapards bush show, but it just wasn't released by hearitagain.
it was the first song they played, but the stuffed up the recording somehow.

According to an article last year, by early 2004, Show Me Your Tears had sold 16,000 copies.

You're right Jason. The last Honeycomb review I read (in French) talked about the Catholics as a "metal-punk band". WTF?

Jason Posted - 08/12/2005 : 01:35:21
Reading the reviews in the press of Honeycomb, I notice lots of misunderstanding about the Catholics. Many critics seem to have barely listened to the Catholics work (if they ever listened to it at all).

There's the Pop Matters review of Honeycomb that describes the Catholics music as "raw, garage-ready rockers", making them sound like the White Stripes or something.

Still other Honeycomb reviews are expressing sentiments like "Wow, Frank Black is finally making a departure from writing songs about UFOs and Pong! How strange it is to hear him sing a country song!". Never mind that Frank's been doing this for years (as we all know).

As I say earlier in this thread (months ago), if people ignored and are barely aware of what Frank was doing during the Catholics era, they're gonna doubly ignore a collection consisting strictly of that era's b-sides and rarities. A package containing the original albums makes for a more high profile, sellable release. And it will encourage re-evaluation.

"If you like Honeycomb (and The Sicilian), here's a package of the albums that led up to it. Catch up with what you missed."
vilainde Posted - 08/12/2005 : 00:46:10
Mmmhhh... I think the figures are way off. Selling 20,000 6-CDs box sets would be quite an achievement IMO. But I get your point.

Have to say, it's kind of insulting to those (all?) among us who have purchased everything FBatCs have done at least once, to be expected to buy them all yet again, for just these few morsels of rareness. This would be worse than the "best of" 5th disc in the Unearthed box set (!). It also seems at least somewhat dubious from the (Cooking Vinyl's obvious) fiscal perspective. My highly uneducated guess would be that almost exclusively, only super hardcore fans would consider buying a 6 disc box set of Catholics material.

Here's my highly scientific analysis:

Current potential offering:
(6 disc box set of 75% rereleased Catholics material @ $59.95)

POTENTIAL CONSUMERS:

1)
Profile: Freako crazy willing-to-buy-Charles-farting-CDs-for-$100-apiece guy (you and me)
Population: Maybe a thousand or two
Purchase Disposition: 95% Will purchase without question
Units Moved: 1,500 - 2,000

2)
Profile: Devoted Frank Black fan
Population: Tens of thousands
Purchase Disposition: Having already purchased most/all of Frank's stuff, will be turned off; perhaps 21.4% will buy
Units Moved: 5,000 - 10,000

3)
Profile: Casual Frank Black/loyal Pxies fan
Population: Tens (or hundreds?) of thousands
Purchase Disposition: Already proven unwilling to buy most of his post 1995 material, will balk as a group at being asked for lots of $$$ for this unfamiliar material; maybe 2.72% of this group will take the plunge, for completion's sake
Units Moved: 2,500 - 5,000

4)
Profile: Who-is-Frank-Black?-Oh,-the-guy-in-the-band-with-the-song-from-Fight-Club-that-Kurt-Cobain-liked? person
Population: Several million
Purchase Disposition: Couldn't be expected to drop $9.99 in exchange for Teenager of the Year; no way in hell would this person consider the purchase. Maybe 1/100 of a percent might go for it, if the packaging has enough 1970s fonts on it
Units Moved: 1,000 - 2,500

5)
Profile: Rich guy who buys everything anyway
Population: 6,450
Purchase Disposition: Buys everything, including this, without a second thought
Units Moved: 6,450

Total Units Moved:

16,450 - 25,950

Gross: $986,177.50 - $1,555,702.50

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Population: Tens (or hundreds?) of thousands
Purchase Disposition: Already proven unwilling to buy most of his post 1995 material, will largely balk as a group at being asked for the equivalent of 2+ standard CDs; maybe 16.81% of this group will take the plunge, for completion's sake
Units Moved: 20,000 - 40,000

4)

Conclusion:
So the numbers themselves might could be just a tad off, but the principle is kinda sound, right?

Stickers, lots of lives, alternate versions and lots of lives.

And a release date too, they stick too it and it would sound really good to me... :)
Ten Percenter Posted - 05/26/2005 : 02:02:06
There don't appear to be any developments in relation to the box set at the moment, at least from Cooking Vinyl's perspective:

"In fact it’s still only penciled in on the release schedule. This means 2 things really – either it will be rushed out really quick & it’ll all get done fast. Or it will be on the release schedule for rather a long time.

I have nothing new to tell you at all – sorry"

I've got it! Frank Black stamps!, if your into licking The Man! Or Frank Black and the Catholics fancy paper with a band photo where they all have those plastic eyes with the beads in them that rattle around?

Carl Posted - 05/24/2005 : 08:28:52
Don't touch the sticker! Don't touch it!! ;)

A true collector, I should have got mine laminated.

Carl Posted - 05/24/2005 : 06:58:44
Yeah, I have that sticker too! I could'nt bring myself to stick it on anything, too precious!!
therewererumours Posted - 05/23/2005 : 14:17:02
Stickers would be awsome! I got a COR sticker with the special edition. I stuck it on my diskman, that was nearly ten years ago and I still use that same diskman, but the sticker faded to almost white, so I obviously need some new ones!

fbc Posted - 05/23/2005 : 11:35:39
nice one! and cheers for this.

i was just wondering what is going to be included, if anything had been decided.
and whether i'll be getting my sticker book and free 10 pack of stickers to get my collection up and running.

Hi FBC,

I will chase this up, but I suspect that the release of Honeycomb is dominating the thoughts of CV at the moment.

don't worry about it FBC, if the french did it it's no wonder nobody else knows about it. i remember back in the '90's melody maker (or maybe NME) put out 3 sets of 10 cards for rockstars, with funny ratings and stuff with categories like hardness, respectability, years to make an album in the stone roses case, punchability in billy corgans case, eyebrows in oasis' case, funny stuff, i think i still have them in storage.

There's this French mag called Les Inrockuptibles (the one behind the crazy Frank cartoon with the aliens you might have seen) which celebrated their #400 with stickers representing some of the "most important people in music/film/art/whatever", made by one of my favorite cartoonists, Pierre La Police. The stickers are awesome, here are a few examples:

Eno:

Radiohead:

Jean-Luc Godard:

I can scan the 50 stickers if you want to have a look, it's funny as hell.

that's a fucking beauty idea, i bet the royalties wouldn't be too bad either if you had like a "big sticker book of rock" and issued stickers for all rockers, mail-in 100 empty wrappers for your free kurt cobain memorial sticker. 200 wrappers for your free autographed frank 8 x 10. any body wanna trade a pixies sticker for my grateful dead sticker sticker? if anybody steals this idea from this website then doesn't include frank in the stickers i will be fuckin' choked!
