Posted - 11/27/2004 : 02:34:45 Ok, so Franks solo albums are out numbered by his work with the Catholics, but which side of the man do you prefer?
I think I've evolved with Franks' music over the years, and love (in variant degrees) all the Catholic records too. But there's that thing in me that always draws me to his earlier stuff, solo Frank. I think it's the quirkiness, alt rock feel and amazing riffs that gets me, whereas the Catholics are more mellow (with exceptions), near country in part/old fashioned kind'a style of writing.
I've been stuck on SMYT for many a month now, love it! But when the urge gets too strong, I pick up the guitar and belt out TOTY.
The Catholics grace my acoustic, but Frank hammers my electric.

You know floop, you and I haven't seen eye to eye on everything. But I would undoubtably choose Yellow if I were stranded on an Island. I have never tired of the constant praise of yellow. The battle between yellow/orange that went on forever: I love that you induced the album to draw so much attention. Long may the yellow album run.
SMYT is near the bottom of my list as well.
i'm glad we see eye to eye on something creamy |

Posted - 04/19/2005 : 01:58:07 Yeah!! let's give silly names:
The first album should be called "Patrick" The first Catholic album: "Nancy"
Who's with me?????
Pistolero should be called "I think I'm keeping saving money"

Posted - 04/18/2005 : 20:17:40 I must admit that I'm against these color designations for the self-titled albums.
Sure, you can say it's like the Beatles, but the way people throw around "Orange" and "Bronze" reminds me more of Weezer. And the fewer things around me that remind me of Weezer, the better, I say.
Personally, I prefer the way Peter Gabriel's audience has nicknamed his three self-titled albums. The call them things like "Scratch", "Melt" and "Car". They're named after something happening on or something pictured on the cover.
I would like to propose that the first FB album be nicknamed "Sun" and the first Catholics be nicknamed "Ancients" (unless someone knows exaclty what those figures on the cover are referencing [Aztecs? Egyptians? Some other ancient culture?]).
Who's with me????
No one?
Okay. |

1. Teenager of the Year 2. Frank Black 3. Cult of Ray 4. Oddballs 5. Show Me Your Tears 6. Dog in the Sand 7. Black Letter Days 8. Devil's Workshop 9. Pistolero 10. Frank Black & the Catholics 11. Honeycomb |

Thanks for answering my never ending questions CoF, pretty darn interesting, and fascinating stuff. All I can do is drive a car. The view's got boring and traffic sucks!

Posted - 11/30/2004 : 11:26:53 Heh, Ride of the Valkyries would be great for the take off! And I agree, that maroon disc is whacked. The Citrus Album... sounds like a CD sampler you'd get with a case of Fruitopia. :)
As for flying now, parts of it are second nature, but I'm usually always trying to learn something new - a new plane (the latest has retractable gear and a constant speed/variable pitch prop), a new rating (night, instrument, etc) or whatever. Going up in a 152 or 172 is pretty second nature but there's a lot more thought that goes into it - weather, time of day, etc. Things like taking off and just flying are as easy as driving a car provided the wind isn't too crazy. Flying by instruments, however, is quite difficult as you have to turn off your natural instinct completely and even an hour of it manually can be very taxing. Landing is never the same twice and is easily my favourite part of flying. It's just very exciting and the satisfaction of a smooth landing is great. Especially if there's a nasty crosswind.
I don't own a plane but provided the place I rent from has a plane available, I just call and say, "Hey, I need a plane for about an hour at 5" and that's it. When you're up there it's like SCUBA diving or like playing music or even listening to music that moves you. You just completely disconnect from the world and live in that moment... actually, it seems that all my favourite things in life happen to give me this disconnect from reality, I'm not sure what that says about me, but...
There were some troubled times where I flew three or four days a week probably. Now I can't afford to get in to that kind of a mess again. :)

How easy does it feel to fly now? I mean, after you learn something, however difficult in theory, it becomes second nature. I would so love to fly a plane.
(Sorry about all the s, i'm just intrigued) Can you jump into your plane whenever you want? Like say you had a pretty shitty day and you just wanna take off in your car to wherever. Just crusing to let off the steam. It would be mad to be able to just hop into your plane and cruise the skies. |

For Triakel, since the front is not one solid colour, we went with the colour of the disc itself. If we were going to call "The Beatles" the black album, then that would be equivalent to calling FB the silver album.
Plus, looking in the liner notes, orange is the prevalent colour. Even the yellow on the cover is not a pure yellow but an orangish yellow. Plus it flows so much better off the tongue.
Good point. How 'bout "The Citrus Album"? I guess it doesn't matter that you call it. We all know what it is anyway!
That maroon CD was freaky. |

I haven't flown in the US. I'm just a private pilot, which means that I don't make a living at it, it's just something that I love to do. I've logged all my hours in the air in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Edmonton in particular was something else, as their municipal airport is fairly close to downtown and landing with a bunch of skyscrapers at the end of the runway (well, obviously distant still, but...) was pretty great. As for my first time taking control, it was a little offputting, because it was actually on my very first takeoff in the cockpit. The first time solo was a little more nerveracking because I was up with the instructor doing circuits (take off, circle, land, repeat) and all of a sudden (I didn't even know it was coming) he told me to let him off at the taxiway and then I did a circuit solo. That was four years ago already, yikes.

Posted - 11/29/2004 : 18:45:21 Unfortunately not, have to keep an ear on the radio. There are planes out there with cd players which cut out anytime there's chatter, but those are damnably expensive and I only rent anyway. That said, there's an instrument called an ADF which tunes into a selected frequency and points at the source of that frequency and you can set it to the low AM frequencies and tune in to the signal, but that's about it. Of course, guests are welcome to bring their own discman but they'd better have good solid studio headphones.

Also my CD is more brown/bronze.

I think you misconstrued the tone of my reply. It was actually meant to be a little facetious. Hard to detect tone in cyberspace. But of course that legitimizes my critique---how could it not? It makes my opinion all the more valid than yours.

Posted - 11/29/2004 : 14:10:10 Frank's work with the catholics is so good, but his solo stuff is a little better. The first album, toty, honeycomb, these are all classics.
