No doubt they're good recordings, but every song on the demoes record being in the top 15 seems a bit absurd. Surely In the Arms of Mrs. Mark of Cain, Death Horizon, Doggerel, etc are better than *some* of the songs on the demoes record? It just seems like there is a much higher standard being applied to BTE than Doggerel. Yes, the looser/off-the-cuff nature of the demoes songs are nice, but I can't help but feel that if "I Just Can't Break It to You," for example, was on Beneath the Eyrie it would be criticized as being too bland and Catholic-y, and that if Death Horizon or Doggerel were on the b-side record they would be heralded as the return of the real Frank Black, etc. It seems that part of what is going on is that the demoes don't have the pressure of being a proper "Pixies" album, so are loved for what they are, while the records themselves receive somewhat ungenerous criticism for failing to live up to the ideal of a Platonic Pixies record.
Sorry, I don't mean to come off as dismissive as I probably am! |

What can I say? I just dig the songs more. You may be right that if Cain, etc were more "hidden gems" I'd appreciate them more...I've always been a sucker for b-sides and rarities. But all I can really confirm is...I just dig the songs! I especially love the lyrics more than the ones throughout much of BTE, they feel more raw and kind of punk and less fussed over or something. |

Enjoying this discussion a lot. Here's my top 15
Thunder & Lightning Who's more sorry now? Hey Debussy Under the Marigold Bird of Prey Ring the Bell Snakes Plaster of Paris Get Simulated Doggerel Nomatterday Ready for Love Death Horizon Hear me out
Doggerel heavy, Head Carrier Light. Was actually quite hard, I'd say there are 25ish Pixies 2.0 tunes that I think are top drawer.
Doggerel is *still* giving to me. Pagan Man was #12 at the start but it's rising steadily the last couple of weeks. |

I am always in favor of MORE SONGS so I am glad nothing like this actually happened, and I still really wish we could hear so many of these reject songs that didn't make it...I wish I understood why it had to be only 12 songs on an album. How about like...14 or 15...? To me, these albums feel a bit short.
Have to agree with you there. I remember walking home giddy from the record shop with the 15 on Doolittle, 14 on Bossanova, 15 on Trompe. It was just great. AND we'd get the 3 extra tracks on the 12 inches. And that's before we get to Teenager, BLD, FMRM. Maybe I'd wrong but I feel that is the influence of Tom trying to make a perfect '12' record but not understanding that a perfect '15' record is more perfect by definition! |

Not sure if this has been discussed here, but I was listening to Indie Cindy and noticing all the vocal parts that WOULD have been Kim Deal...here's the nearest I can figure:
What Goes Boom: "Make some room" backing vocal. "Carry on her grace...stocking...rocking" etc backing vocals.
Greens and Blues - "only visiting this shore" harmony (etc.), "ba ba ba ba baaaaa" around middle of the song (as FBF is singing "Greens and blues..." over and over.) More harmonies in final chorus throughout.
Indie Cindy - "I beg for you to carry me" harmony towards the end.
Bagboy - "Bagboooooooy..." (I think the "cover your breath" thing would be fun but seems too MASCULINE and that her Bagboooooy harmony would be a feminine counterpoint.)
Magdalena 318 - "oooooOOOOoooooohh" in the chorus
Silver Snail - Nothing?
Blue Eyed Hexe - Possibly the chorus harmony? It could have been a Gigantic type thing with Frank doing the higher part.
Ring the Bell - Nothing?
Another Toe in the Ocean - The "awwhhhs" in the verses at 1:30. "Oooooh" in the second part of the chorus ("I'll be here for the rest of my life...")
Andro Queen - Maybe a double of the spanish section? There's other voices echoing in that part that have Kim's texture to it.
Snakes - The chorus harmony? Sounds very much like a Kim clone here.
Jaime Bravo - Very airy and Kim-y harmonies throughout in the background on every line basically. Later in the song there's VERY Kim-like "Goodbye" whispery vocals coming in. |

Man it took me a while to make that post about the phantom Kim Deal parts. I thought it would inspire more discussion. Maybe it was done already? Oh well. |

Sorry - it sounds right, there doesn't seem to be anything to add. It'll never happen, but I'd love for them to overdub Paz on those parts. The album really ended up missing a proper female presence. |

So I used the ChatGPT thing for the first time today. I thought I'd ask it to produce lyrics to the mythical I released song Bogman and this were the results:
Bogman Pixies Style Song
Song title Bogman lyrics in style of Pixies band
Verse 1: I saw him by the river, where the water runs so clear He was digging in the mud, like a dog with a bone to chew He looked up at me with eyes that shone like the moon And said "I'm the Bogman, come and hear my tune"
Chorus: Bogman, Bogman, hear his song Bogman, Bogman, all day long
Verse 2: He sang of the moss and the mud, of the creatures of the deep He sang of the secrets of the earth, and the secrets that we keep He sang of the beauty of the land, and the sorrows of the past He sang of the future that's yet to come, and the hope that will last
Chorus: Bogman, Bogman, hear his song Bogman, Bogman, all day long
Bridge: He'll take you to the depths of the earth, and show you what's below He'll show you the magic of the land, and the stories that it holds He'll teach you to listen to the wind, and the whispers of the trees He'll teach you to respect the land, and the life that it breathes
Chorus: Bogman, Bogman, hear his song Bogman, Bogman, all day long
Outro: And when you hear his voice, you'll know that you're not alone He'll guide you through the dark, and lead you back to the home. |

Haha oh dear. Strangely enough though the frequent references to songs and verses etc are one of my least favourite things about Pixies 2.0. |
