Posted - 10/01/2022 : 01:35:25 What we know (in chronical order):
- Doggerel was made with the 40 demo's/ideas that Frank (and a couple more from Joey) brought to the sessions. They had some good songs that didn't fit the record so they were put aside (acording to FBF in the French Rolling Stone)
- Paz says the band worked on 16 of the 40 songs (bass magazine interview) [12 were released on Doggerel]
- In april (source?) of 2022 the Pixies and Tom Dalgety recorded for a week in Rockfield Studios (Wales).
- One of the songs Frank liked from the demo's, but did not do during the Doggerel-sessions, that they tried to record in Wales. Bluesy, stomper song, "I enjoyed it as an acoustic demo" [...] they tried to make it bigger, better and louder, but "in the end it was just too loud", "too much information". It didn't work out, it was failure, "thank god we didn't release this because we were in a rush" (interview on Raised on Radio)
- Joey brought some songs to the table again (working titles Howie's Garage, I hear you mary, Taking care of bid'ness, according to Uncut interview). They recorded three ideas in Rockfield (according to Under the Radar interview), maybe those three?
- Paz recorded two songs for it (according to BF in French interview)
- Frank to SPIN: [On Doggerel] "I think that’s one more writing collaboration than has appeared on any other disc in the Pixies catalog. I imagine there will be much more collaboration forthcoming. I sense it.”
- Session in Wales didn't go that well, acording to FBF in Ultimate Music Guide : "I was not in a good mood for lots of reasons" I was very frustrated because now Mr Fucking Producer wants to work on all the fucking artsy-fartsy scraps from the margin. I got all these 40 fucking songs I wrote, for once in my life I do my homework............Now I show up with the goods and they're like [] these werid little things that you didn't intend over here bla bla [ ] I threw my notebook on top of the roof [..] I threw about three temper tantrums in about eight days
- Joey in Under the Radar: "we have recorded so far about seven or eight demos for the next album. There will be a ninth album, we’re planning that already. After a good amount of a break, we will start recording again some time next year. We’re already kicking around what part of the world to work and record in next time"
- October 2023: Pixies record a new session with Tom Dalgety at Guilford Sounds, same place were Doggerel was recorded
- Paz leaves the band in october 2023 - march 2024
- Pixies play Vegas Suite, a new song, on the Bossanova Trompe tour
- Pixies rehearse a new song, which is posted on instagram: https://fb.watch/qROLONNt-1/
- Frank Black plays a new song, which is posted on instagram: https://fb.watch/qROQ6dvc5M/
- 11 song titles are published on the BMI website

I found that Spotify's 'This Is...' playlists are pretty good for getting an idea of which albums to check out when listening to unfamiliar music. Then diving into the album which tracks click the most.
Don't have Spotify or any streaming subscription now as a bit burnt out on music but got into The Feelies and especially their album The Good Earth this way.
The Replacements, yeah love them. Can't Hardly Wait is one of my favourite songs ever - Justin Townes Earle did a nice cover of it. His album Harlem River Blues is great, shame he was taken far too soon.
I bought the first Electronic album back in the day as I loved Get the Message and I was a big Smiths fan. But now you've made me realise I should check out the others!
And here is a confession. I don't know any songs by The Replacements! I'll have to add them to the research list for the pre-release period of the next Pixies record.
I know REM and Janes Addiction well though since the early days. Been caught staling was a mainstay on the dancefloor in my youthful days. |

Last time round it was Roxy Music and Wire. This time round it's been New Order. I knew most of the singles but never got the albums. Am absolutely hammering two of their 80s releases at the moment and still plenty untouched so should make it to October without listening to Oyster Beds and anything else new that drops.
I have tried to do things like this also but I find my brain just can't retain so much music at once. Do you have some method that works? Sometimes I'll try listening to the first album over and over, etc, but still, often nothing clicks I think because I get so intimidated by how much is out there. The only sort of successful recent one for me has been The Replacements, to the degree that I got a few new favorite songs, which hasn't happened to me in a long time.
Yes I do, I mix things up a bit. Depends on the artists. I totally get the intimidation thing. So if I'm not in the mood for 'effort' I'll just pick an album that is well regarded and I know some hits are coming e.g Parallel Lines, Back in Black, Songs in the key of life.
New Order or Roxy Music were more a research project approach because I know have heard enough over the years to know I am on similar wavelength. During BTE I got into DeerHunter big time. And during Head Carrier it was Talk Talk.
And if I don't get some sort of rush with 3 album plays I am done. Not matter how many critical plaudits something might have. It's got to click. I'm after that adrenalin rush you get from that secret album track that you imagine nobody else knows about. Frank Black is absolute master of that particular artistic form.

new order is a great choice for this - not just because they have so many amazing songs but also because most of their singles weren't on the albums. people only familiar with the singles (or the incredible substance compilation) have a lot of happy discoveries in store. enjoy!
Indeed it is. The funny thing is my favourite song is Run which I didn't realise was a single. Absolute tune. I also have to pinch my myself that Technique was out the same year I was at home completely obsessing with Doolittle. It's that idea that in record stores both Tecnhnique and Doolittle were probably besides each on the shelves. I know how majestic one of them is but I'm only discovering about the other 35 years later. And that leads to the question what the hell else did I have a close shave but miss out on?

What a great idea Sprite
I did something similar with REM and Jane’s Addiction, two bands I’ve heard tons of songs from but never listened to everything they did. Anyway, I like the way Frank and team are releasing these songs a bit at a time in the 2.0 ere since IC. And seems like Kim is doing it too with her more recent stuff? |

I wonder what the logic is in this album having such a long lead-up. If the pattern holds, we're going to get a 4th single in a couple weeks, then the album still won't come out for another month.
There are still 8 songs we haven't heard, 10 if you count Motoroller and Vegas Suite. 7 if you coun't the Jane-snippet from the dressing room.
I would prefer to keep it that way, have a nice surprise in october. But if they release a 4th single I'm gonna listen to it! Just 2 a 3 times.

It'll be interesting to find out the split of Rockfield vs Guilford Sound recordings. 'Oyster Beds' and 'I Hear You Mary' date from the former, going from the song by song notes. So not a complete washout as had been claimed. Though clearly not enough in the bag for that to have made a release in its own right.
Thanks for this info, forgot that. The session after Doggerel was recorded, but before it was released, right?

There's a video on Instagram of them rehearsing Motoroller. Sounds pleasant enough, reminds me of Neil Young in his Harvest or Comes A Time mode. Wouldn't be aching to hear it live though.
Was considering going for a stroll near the gig tonight but it'll probably lash with rain.
It's like their own original Winterlong indeed Neil Young vibe all the way Also heard some Abba in it!

Posted - 08/28/2024 : 03:26:31 So last night in Galway, Ireland it looks like they played 5 songs off the new album: Vegas Suite, You're So Impatient, Chicken, Motoroller again, and they debuted Oyster Beds. Man I wish some video would surface of those last two in particular. https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/pixies/2024/galway-airport-galway-ireland-7bab3e20.html
Anyone going to the gig in Belfast tonight? Please record the new stuff if you do! |

It was BBC6 Huw Stephens All Points East Live show from Friday Aug 23. Charles' interview starts at 1:40:10
They play You're So Impatient after the interview, no Oyster Beds. so it's audio-spoiler free. Great little interview, the last little bit where Charles is talking about trying to hold the audience's hand and be all chatty and rock n roll showman-like was hilarious. |
