Posted - 06/23/2009 : 15:13:01 i'm so thrilled about some albums lately, but i don't want to make a new topic for each one, so here's the list:
DEERHUNTER - microcastle i just discovered this a couple months ago, and it's easily one of the best albums i've ever heard. i can't stop listening to it!
THE HANDSOME FAMILY - honey moon beautiful, nearly flawless album. rennie sparks never disappoints. great summer night album.
ANIMAL COLLECIVE - merriweather post pavillion haven't stopped listening to this one since january. endlessly wonderful.

Posted - 05/11/2022 : 08:36:31 I thought I'd go back and listen to Black Mountain's 2019 effort - Destroyer - but it turns out they had another one out since then that I missed - Necromancer's Moon. Holy crap this is like pure death metal - like Slayer or Death or something like that. And really good death metal as well! You just never know what you're going to get with Stephen McBean. |

Posted - 05/09/2022 : 13:10:46 Good week for new releases this week. Seem to recall Black Mountain's album of 2019 being in my top 3 albums of the year that year, along with Purple Mountain and The Mountain Goats. New Pink Mountaintops albums is a corker - some really great songs, all filler no killer and plenty of good old fashioned rock and roll. Stephen McBean (front man of Pink Mountaintops and Black Mountain) is becoming a real force to be reckoned with. I've followed his music since Black Mountain album 2: In The Future (2008) and he's got better with every album.

Posted - 05/06/2022 : 07:19:35 New Sharon van Etten album is out. Sounding as great as ever.
Rewrite that - new album is best thing she's ever done I reckon - Rock n roll hall of fame for van Etten!
Was expecting more 80s synth rock but I'll take the ballads and power ballads, a beautifully sad reflection of the past two years of the Cult of Schwab and his global minions no doubt. Kind of got that from the Angel Olsen Collab previously.. |

Posted - 04/30/2022 : 10:26:07 Been following this guy a bit on Youtube protests for the past two years against the lockdowns - he keeps turning up like a load of other faces - anyway he's become a bit of a celebrity through this and this is his new video - it's both political and might not be aligned with your thinking, but also very funny. Also very well produced song a video that's as good as any other hip hop I've heard. Remeece-

Posted - 04/27/2022 : 07:34:09 A friend of mine told me "it sounds like a song you wrote", which I wasn't sure how to take, but it was a really astute observation. But it's hard to put into words why that's accurate, but the kind of simple storytelling and sing song melody and non-fiction first person narration, something about the chord progression, etc, etc. |

Posted - 04/23/2022 : 02:09:48 New Calexico album El Mirador. Have been listening to Joey Burns and Jon Convertino since they were in Giant Sand then began their own thing with Calexico in the 90s. They do desert noir perfectly and all round great band. I always thought a Frank Black and Calexico album / collaboration would have been tremendous.
Here's a song from the recent album with backing vocals from Iron and Wine.

Posted - 03/31/2022 : 14:31:26 Joined Shudder to check out Boy Harsher's new short art film "The Runner" - it's alright to be honest I find it hard to appreciate abtract cinematogprahy (I always feel like it's a bit random how they decide what order the individual scenes go in)
Anyway, this video for their latest single release works really well and the song is a really catchy/feel-good indie synth pop song that deserves more credit than it'll probably ever get from contemporary dumbed down mainstream pop culture
This is like a better re-edit of the last 5 minutes of the film (40m) I don't know why they did this - for art probably and to boost audience figures for their film

Posted - 03/22/2022 : 01:40:00 Heh, good fun. Reminds me that I should listen to more Drones albums.
Recently I've been listening to a bit of Donny Benet. Really good fun, especially his music videos. This one automatically became one of my favourite videos of all time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnzXZlm4wwg
Also been listening to Big Thief's new album which is long but a good listen. Massive fan of this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qF0dXT-v-vY&ab_channel=BigThief

Posted - 03/11/2022 : 06:49:00 If you're not afraid of a bit of cheesy 80's electro synth wave pop - the new Men Without Hats album is fandabby double dosy. Apparently a collection of new and vault songs from back in the day and comes in parts 1 and 2 (MWH Again Part 2 released today)
Might have to dig around their back catalogues now instead of only occasionally listening to Safety Dance when I take the notion after a few lagers. |

Still working my way through TMBG, and even though TAF is gonna think I'm crazy I gotta say the second and third albums are nowhere near as good as their debut. I keep going back to their first album and I can't get into the second one at all and haven't been able to get into the third one much either. I'll move on to number four here eventually.
Also, thanks to Bill Goodman I am starting to get into GBV.
You can't go wrong with Isolation Drills and their most recent output How do you spell heaven, for instance is very easy on the ears. Crystal Nuns Cathedral has just been released and is also pretty straight forward.
The classics run was Alien Lanes, Bee Thousand and Under the Bushes Under the stars. But those can be challenging if you're not used to lo-fi records. (not meant to sound like a snob here, btw)
I also have a soft spot for Universal Truths and Cycles.
Who am I kidding I like them all!

OK, not to be negative, but when we got home we checked the setlists for the previous two nights at that venue (they did three in a row) and we were devastated. My fiance actually started crying. Because at the previous two shows they did all of our favorite songs. We had no idea it would be 100% different songs every night or we would have seen all three shows. So we were kind of upset. All the songs we talked about wanting to hear on the way over in the car were played the previous nights.
That being said, they did play a handful of songs we love, including Stay Forever, What Deaner Was Talking About, Roses Are Free, and Even If You Don't.
Did you see Brian there? He hit all the shows (assuming you're talking NY)?

Hard to think of a more enjoyable live experience than seeing these guys live, and my first time was 1992 (quite a different experience but still terrific.)

Posted - 02/05/2022 : 09:12:02 I mean, I can't tell anyone to like anything or whatever, but the general consensus about Lincoln is 1) it's one of their all time best and 2) it improves on everything that the first album set out to do. It's just thematically rich, the songs are more melodic (if that was somehow possible), the arrangements and production more thoughtful and nicer sounding, etc. The first album gets points for being the more grotesque freakshow, an aspect of TMBG I absolutely cherish, but Lincoln is kind of like the mature, complex version of that. Songs like Ana Ng, Cowtown, Purple Toupee, Piece of Dirt, Where Your Eyes Don't Go, Mr. Me, They'll Need A Crane, Snowball In Hell, Kiss Me Son of God... oh wait I'm naming EVERY song (and I didn't even name MY favorites)...these are all like the most beloved TMBG songs among fans. Honestly, I think it just sounds a lot better. |
