Okay, so the old 'Really not worth a topic' thread is a total mess, with lots of stuff that's really not worth posting AT ALL. So, I thought I'd start a new thread for little articles and things, but not cram it with every little thing that mentions Pixies! So anyway, came across this and hopefully this is an example of something possibly worth posting:

NYTimes.com - Living With Music: A Playlist by Joanna Smith Rakoff.

1) Is She Weird, Pixies. Nowadays, when people talk about the 1990s, the first band they mention is Nirvana, but for me — and most of my college-radio-station-DJ, record-store-regular friends — that era was all about the Pixies, with their irresistible, genre-busting sound: the slow, precise bass, the shifting tempo, the eerie hiss and scream of Black Francis. In 1990, when “Bossanova” came out, I listened to it endlessly — even though it wasn’t on the level of “Doolittle” or “Come on Pilgrim” — thrilled by this brief, odd song, a freaky gloss on Macbeth: “Is she weird? / Is she white? / Is she promised to the night? / And her head has no room.” I was 18 then, and felt very weird and very white.

Right - you see Barry from Eastenders in a lot of people? Personally I think the Future islands guy always reminds me of Greg Hemphill, the Scottish comedy actor best know for Still Game/Jack & Victor
The Maharal Posted - 07/07/2022 : 10:19:36
Might have been me, possibly. Though usually the Future Islands guy is what makes me think of Barry.
pot Posted - 07/06/2022 : 13:13:49
Don't remember saying or thinking he looked like BArry from eastos, no
Stevio10 Posted - 07/06/2022 : 10:51:24
Ha I see where you're coming from, it's hard to pinpoint exactly how but I see it. Strangely, during the Head Carrier period I saw a resemblance to captain Manwaring from Dad's Army. Then didn't you say he looked like Barry from Eastenders from BTE period? Jesus that's like a Dr Who level of incarnation right there! Apologies BF, you don't look anything like them!

I love Jo Brand too - not that much but I think she carries a certain carefree deadpan through her persona which I'm fond of. I love them both, both Charles and Jo equally, but not in a weird way. I'm not "woke" but I am in no way against anyone experimenting and expressing themselves in the context of the opposite gender they were born into. Hermaphraditos is my name
The Maharal Posted - 07/05/2022 : 10:04:32
Ha yeah maybe there's a slight resemblance there. He lost a lot of weight alright - hopefully he's not ill.
pot Posted - 07/05/2022 : 06:19:03
It's a strange illusion created by the fact he appears to have lost tons of weight or more weight I don't know he looks nearly quite normal sized now? One person please acquiesce with me on this so I know I'm not going mad
pot Posted - 07/05/2022 : 06:14:58
Mr Francis posted a photo from Manchester today on twitter - didn't realise they were in the UK already!

Anyway - that's the second photo he's posted recently that I've looked at and can't help seeing not FBF but JO BRAND ! (the english comedian (female) for the benefit of anyone outside the UK who might not know who I mean)

Is this happening to anyone else?

Frank Black looks like Jo Brand lol

Came across this old article about Kim Deal.

https://www.abc.net.au/doublej/music-reads/features/kim-deal-breeders-pixies-last-splash-cannonball-1993-interview/13370482

Maybe this was posted back in the day but if it has I'd forgotten about it.

Quite the achievement for Paz's first songwriting contribution!

Tom Dalgety at Mohawk Trail Massachusetts. Paz posted with similar surroundings. Cool place to make a record if that's what is happening. Sonic Titan recording studio close by...

First FBF song that came on my tunes today was "End of Miles"

I'm not sure I ever really appreciated what an honest, harrowing, melancholy and yet hopeful song that is.

Bravo Frank, this is such good stuff

Dave Grohl's 10 favourite albums. Probably not a surprise to see Pixies there but nice added bonus seeing FB in there too.

Great read.

The podcast was amazing. BTE is a career highlight for me and that's because I'm in Woodstock with the band when I hear that record.

Absolutely. Genuinely enlightening and heartening to hear the band refining the songs. Plus the record itself really does stand up to repeated listening. Some of my favourite FB songs there.

I was thinking before I clicked on the link that Catfish Kate would work well - glad to see they did it! (the only Pixies 2.0 song on the list)

Very tenuous Pixies link I know. I just hope Frank has been writing a whole bunch of new songs during lockdown.

Thanks for sharing tamefan, that was very cool indeed. I love watching these. I saw one of a youngster reacted to the Beastie Boys for the first time, that was cool, and one of a guitar teacher reacting to Ween for the first time. Also cool. Looking forward to more.
