Posted - 10/15/2022 : 10:14:24 I'm down the mother of all Youtube rabbit holes. Some highlights:
I found out Zach Galifianakis had his own talk show and Los Angeles was the music between ads.
I also found him singing Sheena Is A Punk Rocker with Graham Parker: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YnUmhJwYLM&t=1s&ab_channel=GrahamParker-Topic
Danny De Vito and Black crossover https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IiDbwxPOss&ab_channel=Waxploitation
119 Years Ago with Reeves Gabriel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIYAS5exiOE&ab_channel=ReevesGabrels-Topic
Which brought me back to BF, Reeves, Grohl and Bowie doing this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDmbjeGTlrs&ab_channel=MT-TVC15
Here he is on backing vocals and guitar on some ex-Guns N Roses' guy's record https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keiG1DHxMMs&ab_channel=kazmetal
Not sure I heard this Mono Puff cover of Oddball(s) (featuring Lyle Workman) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQQiqX02vRQ&ab_channel=Sashar492
Continuing with They Might Be Giants apparently BF judged a video contest for TMBG? https://magnetmagazine.com/2015/03/04/phoning-it-in-i-was-dancing-in-the-lesbian-bar/ Found the winning video with some comments from BF: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4M5rO1Kd04&ab_channel=ParticleMen

And what a guitar solo towards the end, wow!

Posted - 03/28/2017 : 05:57:16 Thanks to The Maharal for linking this, great interview!
I definitely felt something similar with The Vanishing Spies. Listening to the cassette on my car tapedeck in 1994, I used to think, "Man this song just throws off the pace of the whole album" or something like that. It was the first song by fbf that I just did not like. Now of course I love it. It still feels a bit incongruous to the first four songs of TOTY, but in a good way.
And cool to see him plugging Dylan and the Surfers. |

Posted - 03/28/2017 : 05:28:41 Isaac Brock on BF! (This is eleven years old but I just stumbled across it..)
Frank Black, "The Vanishing Spies"
Isaac Brock: Not one of my favorite songs off that record, but it's not bad. His solo albums are kind of hit-or-miss. At first, I felt like it was kind of wanky in a weird way, and then after I listened to it, I was like, "This is fucking great." Most of the songs on Teenager Of The Year were pretty damn good, like that song "Headache." That's a fuckin' great song. Probably the reason I bought the record—actually, I was gonna buy the record whether there's any good songs on it or not. I fuckin' love that guy. I haven't bought the last couple he's done. I'm sure I will. I haven't really had time to be in a record store buying shit for a while, to be honest.

Posted - 04/01/2013 : 13:06:22 A backstage story that rivals the Grant Hart yog(h)urt incident.
http://cwas.hinah.com/interview/?id=90
quote: David [Berman, Silver Jews] looks surprised. "Whoa, really?" He says, lighting another cigarette, I think of cancer and respiratory machines that look like encroaching insects. David nods, "Let me tell you a story." He says. "I remember years ago I got into a fight with Frank Black backstage at a concert. It was right after 'Starlite Walker' had come out…"
Suddenly the phone rings. David picks it up. "Oh you're late? You're canceling? We're old friends, hey? Yeah." He puts the phone down, visibly upset now. I have to remind him that he's in the middle of the soon-to-be-famous Frank Black story. "Oh, yeah." He says through a ribbon of smoke, "So, after the Frank Black fight I called Laurence and I knew that he's a real master of the press stuff and I knew the Brits like little gossipy things like this but I didn't know…what they did basically was they told the story of the fight from my point of view and they had a picture of Frank in profile and then a picture of me in profile facing each other and we both kinda had angry looks on our faces and the headline said ‘Jew Baits Black’. I loved it. Anyway, you know I've always felt that ever since then Frank Black's career has gone down the tubes. It was after his second album came out and I liked that. I had gone backstage to ask him to produce something of mine and he'd been this total bitch, you know I hate people who treat you with contempt who're like ‘who the fuck do you think you are coming backstage into my dressing room?’ and such and so what I'd done was I'd taken the CD and had brought it to give it to him to listen to and I like just went phssssss..." David takes a Josh Rouse CD off the table and imitates throwing it. "Right at his head like a Chinese throwing star and it went tchhhh and kinda glanced off the top of his forehead and his manager just freaked out and called the police and was like ‘I want this man arrested for attempted assault on Frank Black, and I was ‘oh god, bullshit man!’ I was like, ‘you're such a pussy, Frank Black, you're gonna have this guy arrest me for that? Come on.’ So they handcuffed me and took me out to the police car. All the bouncers in the club and the police were like, ‘god this guy's been…’ they probably were basically saying behind my back, ‘this guy's a fucking complaining New York Jew’ you know, bitching da da da and they finally came back and said they'd decided not to press charges."

Loved this:
quote: Did you play many festivals this summer? I played my last one ever in July - I don't give a shit about them anymore. I mean, we're all paid very well at these festivals, even if you're low on the bill. You wonder where all the money's coming from. I'm standing in a field in Switzerland the other day and I'm watching these parachutists come out of the sky, very dramatically over the audience, and there's smoke coming out of their boots, and I'm like, 'Wow, what's going on? Air show or something?’ Parachutes open up and... Nokia! [cracks up] Fuckin' A, man! All these festivals, they're all Nokia, Heineken, Marlboro... all this corporate bullshit. And I've never been offended by the whole corporate thing - it's like, ‘Fuck it, if you can't beat them, join them.’ But I'm playing these festivals and I always forget this. When I first started playing them years ago, they just seemed cooler; it seemed the audience wasn't quite so dumb. I've got nothing against pop music and I've got nothing against people who want to be showmen, but it really bothers me that there's an expectation from the audience now: they don't have any tolerance for something that isn't that. Even some of my own fans have the same attitude: 'I went to a show last night and I have to say I was very disappointed because he didn't even talk to the audience.' Jesus fucking Christ! I didn't even talk to the audience? Where the fuck have you been!? Have you ever listened to a fuckin' Lou Reed album? Have you ever been to a real rock show? Have you ever seen Mark E. Smith? Come on! You want me to talk? Is that all you care about? Having this interpersonal, 'Heeeey!' Fuck you!

Buxton was the guy who directed Dog Gone.
Three hours long... I'm skimming through it. As far as I can tell, the first BF mention is around the 20 minute mark (concerns Baxter Drury) and then around 1.23 the man himself talks. Not sure if he appeared again after that.
So, he's still knocking about in the UK then.. |

Posted - 10/06/2012 : 04:55:14 quote: Last night, Luisa says, she had a drink with the Mascis' new neighbor down the street, Violet Clark, the wife of Pixies frontman Charles "Black Francis" Thompson. "She finds Amherst so quiet," Luisa says. "It is," Mascis murmurs above the crickets chattering in the trees. I ask Mascis if he's had a chance to talk shop with Thompson yet. "That's the one thing I've tried," he says. "Guitars or amps or records or movies, it's not really his thing."
Reunions, Mascis claims, are another subject that hasn't yet come up in conversation with Thompson. While the Pixies have yet to record a new album's worth of material since they reunited in 2003, Dinosaur Jr. have equalled the output of their first try, and have now enjoyed a longer life the second time around.
