Trout Mask Replica. I'd somehow got to the age of 52 and never heard it. Well, I have now and... well I think I like it.

Also as per Bill Goodman above, Regina Spektor. Not normally my kind of thing but her newest album is addictive.

I've started reading the book by Roger Shepard about Flying Nun (the record label) so have started listening to some of the bands. I live 40km from where it all started, but the whole Flying Nun thing skipped me in my years of youth, so catching up now.
I've started slow, so just sticking with The Clean, which I'm really really liking, and The Gordons, which I also really like, but not quite as much as The Clean.
The Clean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tf1wzg4rdE
The Gordons: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Zvvyyg9Wz4

As far as Flying Nun bands go, in addition to The Clean and The Gordons, anyone who likes Frank Black/Pixies should also check out The Chills, The Verlaines, Tall Dwarfs, and The Bats.

The Dead C had a release or two on there. Their work is decidedly not for everyone, but undeniably unique. Their new album, Trouble, is actually quite excellent for those who like noise and free improvisation.

I am properly listening to This Heat's first record. I really got into Deceit about 7 years ago and totally overlooked this album. I can't believe it was released in 1979. Seems so ahead of the game.

Been listening the Feelies 1986 album The Good Earth, sounds like it could have been released anytime, sounds so fresh.

If you haven't heard them I recommend them highly. For comparison's sake like a mix of jangly 80's REM and the Velvet Underground.

I actually had got a Verlaines cd out from the library the day before you posted this, and I've given that a few spins and it's really good.
The Chills are definitely on my to-do list right near the top, and will work my way through the others in time. Am very conscious of not being a wham-dam-thank-you-mam kinda guy with this....

The Feelies' Crazy Rhythms is an absolute classic. Their other records are great too.

The Chills collection Kaleidoscope World has some fantastic tracks. The Clean anthology and the Tall Dwarfs' Hello Cruel World and Fork Songs are musts, too.

"...Perpetual Nervousness...Fa Cé-La..." It was a lot of fun to listen to.

If you ever watch the movie Something Wild with Ray Liotta and Melanie Griffith, it's pretty weird because The Feelies play the band at their high school reunion and they play songs from Crazy Rhythms.

The Feelies have a new album out this month on the 24th. Think they're playing around north east area in April too. Would love to see them but they don't tend to travel/tour outside the US.

And on the subject, anyone who has the chance to go to an upcoming Miracle Legion show should definitely go.

Spacemen 3 - never realized how good they were.

Fiery Furnaces - thanks to whoever it was who recommended them.

And, sorry to lower the tone, but loads of early 70's stuff as well: Hawkwind, Amon Dul, Can etc.

The Radio Gnome Invisible trilogy by Gong has been getting a lot of play on my turntable lately. Classic albums: Flying Teapot, Angel's Egg, and You. I posted about Gong on here YEARS ago and it was met with a fairly lukewarm reception. Give it another go, y'all.

Cardiacs - Sing To God. One of my all time favourites, a double album that came out in 1996 but I only discovered it a few years ago. Barely a week goes by when I don't stick it on. Utterly glorious, giddy, sprawling madness.

The Sea Nymphs - On The Dry Land. Cardiacs spin-off band's second album from 1992, unreleased until last year. A quieter, pastoral version of Cardiacs really. Just great though.

Dutch Uncles - Big Balloon. They sound very Sparks/XTC influenced to me & very 80's in places. Good stuff anyway.

Beach House all the way. Fell in love with one of their latest songs, "Somewhere Tonight" : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTwQvRNWrI8

Also, as Twin Peaks returned recently, this other video might interest some people here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OS6duOoxctw (directed by Eric Wareheim from Tim and Eric)

Waxahatchee are back with a new album out on friday. Sounding a lot like Throwing Muses/The Breeders these days.

Originally formed by Katie Crutchfield, started off more acoustic and was later turned in to a full indie band with her twin sister Allison Crutchfield. Sound familial?

And Torres is/are back with a new single and album on the way.

Really like this song, it's deep. She seems to be doing St Vincent better than St Vincent is these days. Annie Clarke's new song New York finds me with disappointment, I think she should play the guitar more again.

Anyway this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=608BLWdT_OI

"I got Hard
In your Car
In the parking lot
Of the masonic lodge"

Whatever that means. Interesting ending to the video as well :-P

---

Got to say, and I said this at the start of the year when Laura Marling and Jesca Hoop had their new albums out that women are apparently owning music this year, well for me anyway. There has been a notable amount of great new music this year coming from women.

I also discovered Feist earlier this year, America's PJ Harvey. This song is quite powerful and evokes strange emotions in me that I don't understand, I can't really put my finger on it. Nice bit at the end with Jarvis Cocker explaining how long a century is in seconds, and getting it wrong lol

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsBdHXfCP04

Check out some of her older stuff and live clips on YouTube, lots of stuff I've apparently missed. Easy to do when there's so much great music around these days.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jh7NcYILxRs

---

p.s you can stream the new Waxahatchee album now

http://www.npr.org/2017/07/10/534316416/first-listen-waxahatchee-out-in-the-storm

I strongly recommend it. They just get better every album. I could listen to Katie Crutchfield ooohing all day. In fact I just did.

Keeping with my theme of being late to the party, I just discovered Asphalt Orchestra's cover of Surfer Rosa.

Unreal

How sick is that version of Bone Machine?!

If somehow like me you missed it, check it out

Enjoying the recent Mark Mulcahy album The Possum in the Driveway.

Less in common with his previous album from 2013 and more of a continuation of his previous solo work.

If I had to describe the overall sound, soulful vibes meets depressed carnival clown in 70's era middle of nowhere.

Edit: Or maybe that's the album's artwork subtle influence.

If that makes any sense. I recommend it, one of my favourite singers/front man/solo artist.

New album out now from Dinosaur Jr frontman's new band Sweet Apple. This track is instantly likeable, feat Mark Lanegan and Robert Pollard?)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCUMnJuVnqo

This one's quite rockin' too. Got a bit of a twisted sister feel to the whole video, but it's just straight down to earth grunge rock of the Foo Fighters variety. Must say I definately prefer the rawer, less produced sound of this though.

Susanne Sundfør is back on the scene so just visiting some old clips on YouTube, this live performance from 2015 is well worth a look.

25 minutes in for Accelerate and Fade Away if nothing else, from her 2014 album Ten Love Songs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3VAnlPwNu0

Also Radio 6 just introduced me to the Welsh flower that is Gwenno Saunders, formerly of The Pipettes. Her solo album features songs written and sung by her in her native Welsh tongue and lends itself well to the style of music. This one called Chwyldro is Welsh for Revolution. Very nice Stereolab sound.

Anyone heard of Kyle Craft?

His debut album last year was very good. Good sing songwriter, from the heart produced album. Better than Ed Sheeran.

You need to also listen to the album versions.

More women.

A beautiful princess called Fiona Apple.

Got into her 2/3 years ago when she released her last album, which was very good, as are all her albums. Quite experimental as well.

She has a very nice smoky, husky late night jazz bar over the piano voice. Also can warble like a little bird. Subtle and emotive. I love the tits off her.

Not sure if she has new stuff coming out or not, but it should be about time.
